For someone who thinks it's difficult to describe music in general it's even more difficult to describe the soundscapes of Birds Of Passage. The influences of Alicia Merz, the girl behind Birds Of Passage, are her memories, breathless-inspiring cold winds, the smell and atmosphere of a spring day, smoking cigarettes, sunshine and shadows. As a mixture of all these elements and a minimalistic experimental instrumentation you could describe her music as follows: sometimes shy, sometimes more energetic ('Fantastic Frown') but always intensely and extremly private. Listening to her debut record 'Without The World' is like sharing one long day with Alicia and her thoughts in the diverse landscapes of her home country New Zealand.

Alicia doesn't need the bombastic spectacle of a band to evoke emotions, with the help of different instruments, used in a minimalistic way and combined with field recordings she doesn't create specific songs, she builds up a mood. You maybe can describe Birds Of Passage as a singer songwriter for people who don't like singer songwriter music. There's no typical song structure, there's no melody to chase after ' but there's a development which absorbs you and which makes you start to think about elements you block out in your everyday life.

Tunnel Blanket delivers the epic-in-scope soundscapes that followers of its makers’ previous recordings are accustomed to, but presents them in new lights – where once the sun shone down bright upon immediate tropes and traits, now their work is better suited to distant starlight, casting changeable shadows across vistas of inspired, ambitious amplification. This is not an album to pick through in search of bold hooks and instant melodies. It is an ever-shifting, always moving work, which seems to evolve before the listener – spidery guitar lines feeling their way forth like vines scrambling up trunks in time-lapse photography.

Epic45 is, was and always will be a home recording project/collective based round the ideas and inspiration of childhood friends Ben Holton and Rob Glover. As a ‘group’ Epic45 has seen a few different lineups, as people come and go. Occasional forays into studios do occur from time to time, the first EP ‘Shorebound’ was mainly recorded in 1998 in a small, untidy studio in the attic of an old house in Rugeley! Since then 99% of recording has taken place in various homes as its found to be an overall more satisfying process.

In 1991, Earth reinvented heavy metal. Extra-Capsular Extraction, the debut EP by the Washington state duo, made riffs slow, oppressive, and, perhaps most important, solitary. Suddenly, that clever little device rock bands had used to hook kids for decades was more than an accessory; it was the main event, and it was mean. "Ouroboros Is Broken", the 18-minute monster on the B-side, spewed its riff through distortion, baring claws over the industrial thwack of a drum machine before slowing down and stretching out toward forever. It was loud, punishing, and new; drone metal, the genre, followed.

In 2005, Earth reinvented themselves. After a nine-year hiatus, Dylan Carlson returned with a bigger lineup and, this time, a surprising sound. The slow motion was still there, as were the winding, deliberate riffs. But on Hex; or Printing in the Infernal Method, Earth's monolithic blast had given way to furrowed blues, the volume reduced to a gentle, living-room purr. Two years later, Earth re-recorded "Ouroboros Is Broken" for Hibernaculum, a short album that smartly recast four tunes from the first iteration of Earth in Carlson's new, infinitely arid style. That eight-minute reworking was a revelation, suggesting that not only were Carlson's riffs wonders-- maximum volume, or minimum-- but so were his control and patience. Above a steady drum trot, he bent that old theme with careful diligence, sometimes repeating notes, sometimes omitting them, sometimes letting them radiate. The metalhead knew his jazz and his Jerry Garcia. Here, he wielded those influences perfectly.

The second iteration of Earth has now been recording and touring longer than the first, foundation-shifting phase of the band. You'd be excused, then, for assuming that it's time for Carlson to slip back into the shadows or to again push restart. Rather, on Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1, he returns for his fourth LP with drummer Adrienne Davies, whose tasteful, robust, and slow swing has provided essential ballast for Carlson's thinly etched guitar since 2005. Carlson and Davies do make two personnel changes, though, and they prove essential: The K Records polyglot Karl Blau replaces longtime Earth bassist Don McGreevy, while the swelling organ and horns of Steve Moore are swapped for the much more versatile cello of Lori Goldston.

These shifts don't turn Earth into a new band, but they do provide a fresh context for Carlson's guitar. On the brilliantly winding "Descent to the Zenith", for instance, Goldston plays against him ever so gently, pushing against his pull, emphasizing the way his lines keep chasing their own tails. Moore's organ used to make Carlson's ideas sound bigger; here, by contrast, Goldston makes them sound smarter. On the album-closing title track, the quartet makes torpid circles for 20 minutes, the guitar, bass, and cello revolving separately around a melody. It's as mesmerizing as an early Earth marathon, just that much more intricate.

"Father Midnight" is a tease in tension, with Carlson repeatedly sliding back and forth along a melody and Davies occasionally leaning into her snares and cymbals with added oomph. It suggests that Earth are about to break character, to roll suddenly like a rock band, to get loud. They, of course, never do. Goldston and Blau are essential to that feeling, as she runs knotty strands of dissonance through Carlson's staggered figures. What's more, Blau plays bass like a songwriter, meaning that he makes choices and takes chances a simple sideman might miss. On "Father Midnight", he's the tension-baiting free radical. Blau sometimes steps with Carlson, thickening his leads and keeping it simple; but he often steps out of that role with stray notes in spots that don't necessarily belong or truncated progressions that let the band slip past. For a unit recording together for the first time, this Earth makes complex, counterintuitive choices.

It might be tempting to dismiss Angels of Darkness as a showcase for one of the electric guitar's best craftsman. Carlson's finesse, after all, has never been better than on these five tracks. A master of tone with an ear for clarity and subtlety, he makes his rests as evocative as the notes themselves. And given the band's recent, steady gestalt, it's also tempting to dismiss Angels of Darkness as just another new album from the second Earth-- you know, the quiet band that's metal only by legacy and label. This isn't a radical reinvention as much as it's a refinement; the backing band and its leader have never been better. But when has Earth's music not been about hard-fought rewards and slow revelations? In the 90s, Earth's heavy metal offered an escape, a massive shelter of volume and drone. But the intricacies of this Earth-- Carlson's harmonics and harmonies, Davies' careful builds, Blau's unexpected bass maneuvers, Goldston's adventurous versatility-- demand attention and immersion. That is, check in, not out, and you'll rarely hear four players with as much quiet command.

From the novel Heart of Darkness come the dying words of a madman, “The horror, the horror.” Joseph Conrad wrote his defining work of fiction based on the horrific account of one man and his grizzly trip into the literal heart of darkness, wherein horror by means of malaria and human desecration found a home. On Mare Decendrii, the latest release from Mamiffer, the tension is made to watch as the suspense holds a knife to horror’s throat. This is one spooky, unflinching album.

Given the history of the duo behind Mamiffer, the album shouldn’t come as much of a surprise – it’s heavy yet refined. Aaron Turner, of Isis and Old Man Gloom reputation, combined creative powers with Faith Coloccia, graphic dark artist, to produce this love child of doom and gloom, an album that finds itself floating in the same black waters as Bohren & Der Club of Gore and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

What sets this album apart are the favored strings and vocals, a kind of mystic experience of chanting monks, and sudden, terrifying screams (it was late, the room was dark – the air was heavy with We Speak in the Dark, when suddenly a short, primal scream sends me scrambling for the lights). Mamiffer’s moody As Freedom Rings is a thirteen minute piano heavy, constantly climbing, well crafted organic theme for night time redwood trekking. Alone. In the fog.

Mamiffer collaborated with many interesting names to produce Mare Decendrii – co-produced by Bjork and collaborations with Sera Timms of Black Math Horseman, Joe Preston of Thrones, and Brian Cook of Russian Circles, to name just a few, the album is one of the rare ones that feel complete. It’s hard to imagine how much time went into the crafting of this work of musical fiction, mainly because it’s hard to believe that the musicians would have the patience to sit and steadily etch it out. It’s the barrel aged whiskey of instrumentals – it’s dark, it burns like hell going down, and it leaves you filled with what Brett Easton Ellis would call a “nameless dread,” but damned if it doesn’t feel good.

With only five tracks, the album rubs up against the sixty minute mark, the longest track being just over twenty. Worthy of study, reliably pessimistic (with hope strewn about), Mare Decendrii is not your father’s reading material; it’s a different take on the journey into the heart of darkness.

On 5 March 2007, the band released a limited 7” single (Yuki/Forever the Optimist) through Cuckundoo Records, and have been tipped by BBC Radio One as one of the hottest new bands in the country. The band recorded a session for Huw Stephens ‘s show on BBC Radio 1, which was broadcast on 29 March.

This was followed by a performance at the Latitude Festival and a UK tour, both in July, with the lineup including Peter Wright, who became a member after the tour. Another single - “Two Words and a Gesture” was released in November 2007.

In December 2007, Vessels traveled to Minneapolis, USA to record their debut album with producer John Congleton in Pachyderm studios. They completed recording of the ten track album in 12 days and returned to the UK for a nationwide tour. On June 16th, they released “A Hundred Times In Every Direction” and the album was released on August 18, which is entitled White Fields & Open Devices.

2010 was a busy year for Vessels with another trip to the U.S. to record their second album, Helioscope, again under the production of John Congleton but this time at The Track studio in Dallas, Texas. Followed by their first single release from the new album, ‘Meatman, Piano Tuner, Prostitute’ which includes guest vocals from solo artist Stuart Warwick adding a new dimension to Vessels' unique sound. The year was then rounded off with a small collection of UK tour dates including Stuart Warwick himself, and a lengthy European tour in support of Oceansize.

Now in 2011, Helioscope was released on Cuckundoo Records on the 21st March following another UK tour and Vessels are excited to announce a number of European tour dates throughout May.

Belong's 2006 debut, October Language, processed guitars into clouds of edgeless texture and tone. The Colorless Record EP from 2008 reorganized those huge, crumbling drone-chords on a spindle of obscure psych-pop covers, making the sound less abstract while remaining a glorious ruin. With Common Era, the new album from the New Orleans duo of Turk Dietrich and Michael Jones, an evolutionary timeline emerges.

The band's development began in the primordial muck on October, leapfrogged to the 1960s with Colorless, and now lands with one foot in the krautrock of the 1970s and the other in the shoegaze/post-punk of the 1980s. (Let's hope that next, they pass over their grunge record and skip right to dubstep.) This is Belong's least mysterious album by far, with a greater emphasis on vocals, perceptibly changing chords, and rock rhythms. They used to sound like Tim Hecker having a dream about JAMC, My Bloody Valentine, or even Joy Division. Now they evoke such acts much more directly, as well as the distantly thundering drums of Can at their most elemental. Those drums especially temper Belong's sublime omnipresence, and their music comes to sound flattened here.

Belong often do a great job of separating these key influences from their unique style, but it feels like too much of a genre exercise to maintain album-length interest. Opener "Come See" is a tour de force of reconstituted krautrock: A gale of melody-drenched distortion and interference twists around a sinewy bass and drum figure. Sustained chords fall through one another to the sound of rending metal. Elongated vocals pull back against the pulse, and it's all capped by a stuttering feedback solo. The song is so comprehensive in its homage and mighty in its execution that it renders the rest of the album somewhat redundant, as Belong continue to mine the same vein with diminishing returns.

The dark synth-pop mood of "Never Came Close" should make for a change of pace, but Belong's murkiness obscures songwriterly differences, emphasizing instead a sameness of surface: muffled voices and broad strokes of glittering melody. The song's endlessly echoing snare also illustrates how limp their version of the motorik pulse can feel; it actually drains tension from the music. It's not that there isn't cool stuff here after the first track-- the curling bass line and stately progression of "A Walk" make it sound favorably like a chillwave M83, and its opening flourish is especially neat. But "neat" is where Common Era seems to stop. Most of the songs are solid, with the possible exception of the slackened "Keep Still", but none after the first has much capacity to surprise us or deepen the palette. -pitchfork.com

The winter of 2009 found Kontakte in hibernation, watching the snowfall outside and writing and recording between their home studios and rehearsal room. Zeroing in on the tiniest of detail, the long process involved meticulously recording and listening to hours of guitar layers, textures, beats, piano and strings. Winter became spring and in the summer of 2010 they emerged with 8 finished tracks. Each track was written with the others in mind with thought given to how each would sit next to the other and be heard, not separately, but as a collection of songs - a continuous hour of music.

Inspired by a myriad of artists ranging from This Will Destroy You to The Album Leaf to Tim Hecker and Eluvium, Kontakte have produced an album that despite its initial intensity, reveals more of itself within its numerous layers of melody and texture – a hypnotic record that evokes the sense of escapism in which it was conceived.

Lassitude is the very first release from the UK label Lone Vigil, and is the debut of black industrial post metal doomlords Cloaca. Both the label and the band are fronted by Chris Naughton, he of doomsludge masters Atavist and neo pagan black metallers Winterfylleth, but Cloaca is a whole different beast than either of those two outfits, and while most descriptions peg Cloaca as 'experimental industrial doom', that might be a bit misleading. It might have you picturing a churning avant Godflesh or some sort of machinelike downtuned Swans, when in fact, the sound of Cloaca is much more organic, and much closer to the slow build post metal of groups like Pelican, Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, Snowblood, and Isis, the guitars lush and warm, the songs sprawling epics, with spiralling melodies, and dense tribal drumming, brooding and majestic, like a blackened Godspeed, building to explosive howled churning ultra metal blow outs, that transform into roiling chugging grooves, heavy and motorik and mesmerizing. The songs spend much of their time drifting dreamily, spidery guitar melodies draped over loping post rock rhythms, and when they do get heavy, it's not always explosive crescendos, the band can lock into a riff and ride it out like some sort of black doom post metal Hawkwind, extended psychedelic cosmic metal jams that destroy, heaving hypnotically, thick sonic swells that churn and roil and eventually do explode into some serious heaviness, but it's not just big chords there either, the band get super dense and complex, start stop rhythms, mathy arrangements, thick and convoluted and so so heavy. Throughout the record, Cloaca deftly flit from moody drift to soaring majesty, to metallic crush, wrapping impossibly hooky melodies and strange disembodied sampled voices around thick slabs of metallic hypnorock, a sound that's definitely hard to make your own, but these guys have definitely staked their claim on this chunk of epic brooding heaviness, that we would imagine few would be able to challenge. Definitely essential listening for fans of Rosetta, Baroness, the Body, Grails, The Ocean, Angel Eyes, Tides, Souvenir's Young America, Mouth Of The Architect, Irepress, Indian, Conifer and other post metal alchemists...

In February 1999, three longtime friends from West Texas went to a pizza place in Austin, Texas, for a prearranged meeting with a young man from Illinois. The Illinoisan had just moved to Austin, and he had put up a flyer that caught the interest of the others. They ate pizza and discussed movies and arcana. They also decided to meet the next day with their various instruments (two guitars, bass, and drums). This happened, and over the coming months they picked a band name, then picked a better band name, then wrote and recorded an album. That album, called How Strange, Innocence, was largely out of tune, but the band members didn't really notice at the time. They optimistically printed 300 copies, and gave most of them away. It turned out they really liked playing together, so they kept doing so. A friend of theirs sent a recording of one of their live shows to a record label in Baltimore, and that label offered to put out albums for the band. The band agreed. A year later they put out a second album (Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever). They began to tour often, all over the world. In 2003 another album came (The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place), and in 2007 they put out All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. Their fifth album, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, will be released in April 2011.

Lento is an instrumental collective based in Rome, Italy.
The former members joined in 2004 as a quartet and started working out a sort of introspective and implosive approach, taking their cue from a wide range of influences including seminal bands such as Neurosis, Earth and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. After a short time break, in late 2005, Lento expanded into a five piece act, and began structuring the basement of a more elaborate mood. Incorporating elements of ambient, doom and hardcore, lento has created a perfect opposition between sludge heavy riffs and ambient psychedelic suites. Lento’s tone is a blend of heavily down tuned guitars, apocalyptic slow tempos, systematic drones and resonant feedbacks, their live sets alternate from hardcore assaults to intimate collapses of the signals.

Year: 2010

Tracklist
01. Soy Dios

Dead Sea Apes are a three-piece group from Manchester UK, comprised of Brett Savage (guitar), Nick Harris (bass) and Chris Hardman (drums). Since mid-2009 they have been developing a hard-hitting, dynamic blend of desert rock, drone rock, garage rock, krautrock, post-rock, western soundtracks and psychedelia.

Their debut single Soy Dios was released in December 2010, a nine-minute instrumental inspired by the Mexican psycho-Western El Topo and backed by two equally epic remixes. Several more tracks are currently in the works for a new EP, to be released in February or March 2011, including Astral House which was recently played by Stuart Maconie on his Freakier Zone show on BBC 6Music.

As well as working as an instrumental trio, Dead Sea Apes regularly collaborate with other musicians, such as Canadian singer-songwriter Gabe Minnikin, and Stray Light's Ellen Poliakoff; and in December 2010 they played an extended improvised set with legendary Can vocalist Damo Suzuki.

The group are currently arranging more gigs for 2011.

"Nostalgia For The Absolute" is Arms and Sleepers' 12th official release, and the 1st of 2011. Deliberately planned for the transitional period between winter and spring, this short album evokes not only the romanticism and darkness of the unforgiving cold season, but also the excitement and hope of the nascent warm season. Written and recorded over a course of two years, "Nostalgia For The Absolute" finds the band further exploring their modern-classical and ambient leanings, both an homage to and an expansion on their previous effort of similar nature, cinematique. Wordless, concise and melancholy, this is a release that has focus but is not afraid to breathe—a perfect soundtrack for the sleepless, the contemplative and the nostalgic.

"Nostalgia For The Absolute" is the first in a series of albums and EPs to be released by Arms And Sleepers in 2011, and acts as an introductory piece to the 3rd official full-length, out in May also via Expect Candy.

Drawing heavy influences from fellow post-rock acts such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise, Mogwai, and Russian Circles; Kuato creates a powerful, unique experience for their listeners. Intense dynamic changes, harmonized guitar melodies, heavy hitting drums, and driving bass are all major staples of the group.

Their first EP, released on October 25, 2010, was met with almost instant critical acclaim. Within only two months of its release, it was chosen by critics from the Halifax independent newspaper, “The Coast”, for their “Best Albums of 2010” list.;

Blekinge, the name of the part of Sweden Signo Rojo hails from loosely translates to
"Pale nothing"... That could be seen as somewhat indicative of the national character of the nation that has spawned some of the best harder-edged musical groups around these last decades.
Also cheap furniture.

Signo Rojo is an entity with both fleet firmly planted. One foot is anchored in the deep sludge of southern USA and the other planted in the ethereal world of introspective post-metal. The dangly bits in between have, on the other hand, been dipping into a wide variety of places. Be it crust-punk, doom-metal, classic prog or hardrock, Signo Rojo's privates has had an intimate history with it.

The band proper was formed in the late autumn of 2009, when the four members met at a local metal-show. They began writing almost immediately and spent the following winter and spring cooked up in the rehearsal room constructing and shaping a dynamic live-set that continues to evolve to this day. The following summer they started their crusade of gathering as much live experience as possible with their hopes set high on a touring future. A hardworking band is a healthy band and Signo Rojo craves the excitement, the energy and the positive social interactions you only get at a live show.

Band's Deal

We have just uploaded the new promoalbum on our myspace in it's entirety! We hope you will enjoy it and here's how you can get a FREE downloadable copy of that promoalbum.

In a nutshell what we want you to do is this:

You send an email to a promotional outlet, a music-blog, a radio station, a magazine, a promoter, a label, a tourbooker/venue (if you have a music blog/page of your own or if you invite a bunch of friends to our facebook fanpage we'll count that too) ANYTHING you can think of that may find our music interesting and forward the same email to signorojoswe@gmail.com ( please, no penis-enlargement suggestions though. We get enough of those as it is) and then you'll receive one free digital download of the new promoalbum to do with as you wish.
Good deal huh?

This way we'll get help promoting the band and you get free shit, if that isn't a win-win situation i don't know what is.
And please, BE CREATIVE! You don't have to limit yourself to the suggestions we gave earlier, do something completely out of left field if you want. Go nuts! If there are some stand-outs among the contributions those contributors may get some other free goodies on top of the album.
