Ashes And Iron are back after 6 years and what a comeback! The Wind Takes A Side captivates the listener from the first second to it's last and in the end you just can't get enough of it and wish there were more tracks! This is one of the best releases of 2014 and surely the best post-metal EP I've heard in the past few months.

Ashes And Iron are a 4 piece downtempo-posteverything-instrumental outfit from St. Louis, MO.

"The Wind Takes A Side, the second release from St. Louis' downtempo-instrumental-indie-metal outfit Ashes And Iron is a dark, cathartic ride. A dystopian soundtrack where sweeping, visually evocative tracks move from crisp, telecaster driven layers of harmonized gloom to the wide open roar of unforgiving despair, all songs laced with mournful melody. Midwestern delivery dominates here: a muscular, propulsive rhythm section and angular, cascading waves of guitar fill an expansive canvas. Ashes And Iron take no shortcuts and The Wind Takes A Side drones, slashes and burns proving again the beauty to be found in perfect desolation."- Andrew Elstner (Torche)

For this year's TOP 20, I left out some releases, due to coming out late, not  meeting the criteria for the Blogovision or due to that I had to only choose 20. The Inquisition: 027.Arms Of Tripoli

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Mike: The name came out of a brainstorming session with the initial members of Arms Of Tripoli. Each of us brought several suggestions to the table and the front runner at that time was Arms of Saguaros.  However, we just couldn’t all whole heartedly commit to it because we were unsure it fit.  Brian, being a huge Pinback fan, suggested “Tripoli” instead of “Saguaros” simply due to his affinity for the way it rolled off the tongue.  Everyone else agreed and thus Arms Of Tripoli was adopted as our official name. All the other band names we came up with actually became the names of the songs on the first EP.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Mike: We certainly do not have one approach to writing… but more often than not, someone will come in with an idea… a riff… and the band will take that idea and build on it. Each individual person in the band will contribute to the song and it will grow out of that one idea. It isn’t necessarily at the beginning of the song and then we work our way through it adding each section…. It is more like us trying several different things… building it up, breaking it down, rearranging, and finding a common ground where we’re all satisfied with the song. It is never a single member effort, and we would never want it to be. Every member of the band is equally represented in every aspect of Arms of Tripoli. That notion goes far beyond just the way we compose songs… it is fundamental to our nature.  Sure we don’t always agree about everything, but that would be so weird if we didn’t.  Without the ability to compromise when composing, I think we’d never feel we had the freedom to experiment. If we didn’t approach composing that way, I don’t think we’d all be satisfied with the music we produce.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Mike: Musically? Wow… there are so many musical influences I have… and that’s just me personally. I know everyone in the band has numerous and wide ranging musical influences. I guess some common post/math-rock ones amongst us are: Tortoise, The Mercury Program, Fugazi, Shellac, June of 44, Rodan, Shipping News, Do Make Say Think, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Mogwai, Paul Newman, A Minor Forest, Dianogah, The Dylan Group, Pullman, Lumen, Ratatat, Trans Am, and Ui,. But as mentioned before, we all have wide-ranging influences. For example, Pink Floyd and King Crimson are two of my favorite bands.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

Mike: Pink Floyd - Meddle
George: Radar Bros. - And the Surrounding Mountains
Jaime: All of Godspeed's albums
Allen: Kowloon Walled City - Container Ships

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Mike: I believe it was Michael Jackson – Thriller. I was a huge Michael Jackson fan (like glove and red jacket, Alfonso Ribeiro in that Pepsi commercial type fan) when I was like five. How embarrassing.
George: Mötley Crüe - Theater Of Pain (Bought), Prince - Purple Rain (Stolen)
Jaime: I have no idea. Probably Debbie Gibson
Allen: DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince: He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Mike: Tortoise
George: Katy Perry
Jaime: Do Make Say Think
Allen: Dinners

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Mike: Oh definitely. That is basically the only avenue of promotion we’ve had. We are entirely grateful too! We appreciate the time and effort that all of the bloggers who’ve written about us took!  We are definitely indebted to them for spreading the word about Arms Of Tripoli. I guess it would be Denmark for me.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

Mike: Well, the thing is, I think that name-your-own-price and streaming services like that are extremely beneficial to underground, non-established bands. Arms Of Tripoli certainly fits that description, so I do believe that those services have assisted with exposure for us. We certainly don’t benefit financially directly from them, but they do promote us in a way by making our music accessible to a very wide audience for basically free. I can’t really comment on whether they are good for other bands, or good for the music industry as a whole cause I honestly just don’t know.  It’s too early on in this music business revolution for me to really have an opinion about it.  Arms Of Tripoli is entirely on one end of the spectrum in this… but I feel comfortable in stating that they have been beneficial for us.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Mike: Still making music… This is our outlet. This is what we do for fun. This is how we express ourselves creatively. I think we all agree that we certainly hope we’re still doing this five years from now!

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Mike: I think it’s important, but it has definitely lost value. Album artwork certainly doesn’t affect you like it did in the era of records, tapes and CDs, where you had something tangible to hold and look at while you listened to an album. But that I think can be a blessing and a curse. It certainly alleviates the pressure of coming up with memorable, Storm Thorgerson-esk like artwork to embody the music on the album because most people will probably never care to look at it. But it certainly limits the experience in a way.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

Mike: I really like In the Court of the Crimson King.

George: Bastard noise/Geronimo – Inertia

Allen: P.E.E - The Roaring Mechanism

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Mike: I think there are various reasons people prefer vinyl. I personally think that the ones that say it sounds better are full of shit.  But I respect those that just admit that they like vinyl, and prefer to have an album on vinyl. I mean, it really doesn’t matter why to me… it just irks me when hipsters go on about it being a superior format.  I don’t think I really have a preferable media format. I can argue that a digital format on an iPod has certainly made managing a large catalog of music more convenient for me, and it certainly makes traveling with that extensive catalog much easier for me.  But it isn’t like if it isn’t in a certain format (i.e. vinyl, lossless digital, or on a goddamn cassette) I won’t listen to it, or be irritated that I’m not getting the full listening experience. However, with that said, I do think it would be cool to hear Dark Side in quadraphonic… but in a novelty type of way.  Not like once you hear quadraphonic, you can never go back to stereo.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Mike: Wow, I was literally just telling this story again to Allen at last practice. So, when I was just out of high school, one of my best friends, his girlfriend and I made a trek up to San Francisco to see A Minor Forest open for Shellac at Bimbos. I’m not sure why we thought it was all ages, but we were genuinely disparaged and disheartened when we got there to find out it was 21 and older. Not knowing what to do, we stood around dismayed while a line of people proceeded to purchase tickets for the show. We happened to notice John from A Minor Forest exit a side door and ran up to him to tell him our story and lament about the age requirement. He was kind and understanding and asked us to give him a little time to come up with a plan, which just completely astonished us. I don’t think we actually thought that he might have a way to get us in. So he went to dinner with his mom and returned to let us know what he had come up with. His plan consisted of us posing as his siblings and having his mother escort us in as her children. Now I have a fairly pale complexion, my friend is of Columbian decent and his girlfriend was half Japanese, not to mention all of us were the same age, so I was unsure how that was going to work… but sure enough, it did. We were certainly scrutinized by the door man, but I think he obviously caught on, and being the good man he was, let it slide under the circumstances. It turned out to be an amazing show and we profusely thanked John’s mother upon departing.  Flash forward to earlier this year… Arms of Tripoli had the opportunity to open for A Minor Forest here in L.A., which easily was the best moment for me in the band. I got to talk to John after their set for a while and told him the story.  He remembered and said that surprisingly enough, that very night was the only other time a family member was attending one of his shows. I was obviously elated to tell him that story, have him remember, and have it all come full circle in getting to open for one of the biggest influences for me musically. It still makes me happy to this day thinking about it!

Baulta was formed in the 2008-2009 in Jyväskylä Finland, by Matti, Tom, Jami and Iiro. The idea was not try create the wheel again, but to play music they liked to listen and play. Music that didn’t hail the power from vocals, but from layers and textures. You could categorize them as post-rock, post-metal, alternative, but in the end it’s the music that speaks for itself.

As the first album was being made, the idea of releasing the music free was grew amongst the band. The reason for that was, that if nobody would’ve even listened to the music they would have made the music anyways. The music was and still is a way for the members to survive in this crazy world.

2011 was the year that the world saw the release of their first album "Deeply Sorry To Interrupt Your Megalomania". Shortly after the release of the album and some attention from the public, they started producing their next album.

With their new bass player Janne they produced and recorded most of the album by themselves during 2012 and in December of ‘12 they released their second album "That’s My House Your Living In". The album got considerable amount of exposure around the world and received positive reviews from the fans and critics.

From the sessions of 2012 they had 3 songs which they planned to release as a separate EP and in May of 2013 it saw the light of day: "Greatest Solos Of Mr. Bellini Vol. 1".

In the fall of 2013 Baulta stepped up into the live-scene by playing in some gigs and started recording their new album "Any Fool Can Regret Yesterday", which was released in December 2014. It is planned to be pressed on vinyl in early 2015. Currently Baulta is Tom, Matti, Iiro, Miro and Markus and together they shall continue playing ever-evolving instrumental music.

Whale Fall is an instrumental rock band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2008, the five member group, whose name derives from the biologic process by which a decaying whale carcass spawns a new sea life community, quickly established a dedicated fan base who embraced the band's dynamic live sound, leading to the recording of their eponymous debut album, a vinyl double LP self-released in 2011. In addition to live performances, recordings, and an expanding online presence, the group's music is reaching new audiences with the inclusion of two Whale Fall tracks in the award-winning documentary Code Black, currently in wide release. This cinematic foray complements the numerous soundtrack credits attributable to the fivesome’s past projects, including The X-Files, Kiss of Death (1995), Up in the Air (2009), promotional trailers for The Help (2011), and several independent films.

Whale Fall's sound stems from a wide range of musical influences, from shoegaze to experimental rock to Ennio Morricone cinematic fare to the echoes of border town Americana replete with mariachi horns. Add to this mix the visuo-narrative influences of the group's external surroundings in the American West, the cultural milieu of Los Angeles, and the internal landscapes of their individual imaginations. This is the very concoction that gave rise to the band's second album, titled The Madrean, a collection of eight thematically linked compositions paying homage to the Madrean region of North America, the arid landmass spanning the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. With band members having spent their respective formative years in Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and California, the Madrean Region is an inescapable internal and external space for Whale Fall, and the intersection of its urban and natural environs—from L.A. freeway overpasses to majestic Sierra peaks—serve as both the backdrop and the foreground of the music of The Madrean as well as the accompanying visual imagery.

On this, Whale Fall's sophomore offering, the band's live ensemble of traditional rock instrumentation augmented by trumpet and piano is further expanded with the addition of saxophone and cello. The interplay between Ali Vazin's ethereal guitar swells and Dave Pomeranz's raw six-string tones suggests the vast desert sky overhanging stark and rugged terrain, with J-Matt Greenberg's trumpet and keyboard flourishes providing the flora and fauna, all supported by the tectonic framework of Erik Tokle's gliding bass and Aaron Farinelli's foundational percussion. Guest instrumentalists Joseph Santa Maria on saxophone and Artyom Manukyan on cello conjure the few rivers and streams that course through this arid landscape. Recorded and mixed alongside the taco trucks and bodegas of Highland Park in northeast Los Angeles, the music of The Madrean centers its urban origins in an awareness of its encapsulation between the Pacific Ocean and San Gabriel Mountains. This sonically invoked imagery is visually reinforced by the beautiful artwork created by Emmy award-winning designer Jordan Wayne Lee. Whale Fall is very proud to present this new incarnation of a timeless character, The Madrean, to both the denizens of the Madrean Region and the world at large.

Arms Of Tripoli first full length album is nothing short of a spectacular sonic masterpiece, characterized by layer upon layer of dream guitars, spread out like a deep field panoramic picture from the Hubble telescope. With this album, the band pushes the boundaries of not only the margins they set for themselves with their debut EP (All the Fallen Embers), but of the instrumental music genres in which they are often classified as well. Again the band collaborated with fellow musicians who lent their own interpretation and vision of the songs to the recording, helping to further shape and structure the overall album.

Dream in Tongues is a unique representation of the evolution of the band in both its musical style and composition techniques. The individual musical idiosyncrasies of each member, along with the additional musical collaborators, all mesh thoroughly into a refreshingly modern approach to the post-rock genre, resulting in an aural delight that is sure to enchant and captivate!

Qualia is the solo instrumental music project of Dan Leader from Cambridge UK.

Qualia began in a bedroom in early 2010 as a collection of musical ideas and experiments. After a year and many recordings, the first full length album, titled ‘Vert’, was released on Bandcamp.

Since that time there has been a steady release of Qualia albums and EPs, with earlier material focusing on crescendo-driven post-rock while later on becoming more subdued and ambient, featuring more acoustics and layered guitar sounds, and focusing more on atmosphere and mood.

The Inquisition: 026.Downfall Of Gaia

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Dominik: In Greek mythology 'Gaia' is known as mother earth. Besides the beautiful sounding of the word/name it made total sense to add this one to our bandname. Of course we wanted to have a name that makes sense and fits to our music. So we started to brainstorm. Just like any other band does. If I remember things right I walked in one day into our rehearsal room and Anton and Tim (our first drummer) looked at me and said "listen man - what do you think about this name?!"Downfall of Gaia describes in a very good way what this band, the lyrics and the atmopshere is about.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Mike: On our most recent record, “Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay,” the two guitarists (Peter and Dominik) worked on creating song skeletons on their own. They had 2-3 songs each already arranged and presented the riffs to the rest of the band. Toni and I would then work on our parts and the songs would start to fill out more. We demoed all the new songs and listened to them for a month before we got back together and re-arranged a bunch of sections, added and deleted certain parts, and finally added lyrics on top of everything.
Dominik: Yeah – that's usually how we do it. Peter and me are preparing some stuff at home before the 4 of us get together. Every record we did till today started like that. Of course we did the same for 'Aeon...' . Just like Mike said.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Mike: Right now I am listening to a lot of Altar of Plagues, Hope Drone (AUS), Torch Runner, Oathbreaker, Alaskan, Bereft, Hexis, Implore, and Dragged Into Sunlight. Also, I went to university for Jazz Performance, so I listen to a lot of jazz as well, such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Roy Haynes, Tony Williams Lifetime, and more recently, Mark Guiliana and his various projects (Beat Music / Heernt / Mehliana.)
Dominik: When it comes to Downfall of Gaia I would say our sound is driven by doom, sludge and black metal. Besides that I would say all of us are pretty open minded when it comes to music. As long as it's good it can be any genre. Personally when I'm hanging around at home I'm listening a lot to The Devil's Blood, Agalloch, Tribulation, Thulcandra, In Solitude, The Essence, The Estranged.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

Mike: Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
Dominik: Agalloch – Marrow of the Spirit

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Mike: Oddly enough, I bought Mastodon's Crack The Skye on a whim, and now I’m obsessed with vinyl.
Dominik: I have to admit it was Green Day's 'Dookie' in 1994. I was 10 years old and this was my first record ever.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Mike: Converge or the Dillinger Escape Plan.
Dominik: Neurosis or Agalloch.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Mike: Blogs definitely helped spread our music. The weirdest and most exciting place I shipped a record was Japan. I am always surprised how much support we get from around the world, it’s truly humbling.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

Mike: I love bandcamp. I’m not a big Spotify user though. Honestly, I really enjoy when a band posts their record for “pay what you want.” Most of the time, I’ll download it for free so I can listen to it on all my devices, and if I love it I’ll order the vinyl.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Mike: Doing the same thing I am doing now. Writing records with Downfall Of Gaia and Black Table. And touring as often as possible.
Dominik: I really don't know. I never was that kind of guy who planned a lot and knew what would come up next. I never did things that way. So I absolutely got no idea.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Mike: I think the artwork is even more important now in the digital age. You can now listen to bands from all over the world, right from your computer chair. So I think it’s very important for bands to do something to separate themselves from the clutter of the internet marketplace. Aside from writing great music, a band needs to have interesting artwork, live show, and merch.
Dominik: The visual aspect often goes hand in hand with the music. I really dig it when bands create 'more than just music'. When lyrics, music, artwork, liveshow becomes a whole and a true form of art.

11. What is your favorite album cover?

Mike: I have this gorgeous split from Alaskan and Co-Pilot. The cover is a photograph of a snow covered field and forest with grey skies. I think the photograph reflects the music on the split perfectly. Dark, desolate, and beautiful at the same time.

Dominik: Cough – Ritual Abuse.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Mike: I think the resurgence of vinyl is a natural social response to the diminishing value of music. The average consumer is now accustomed to music being free. However, I think musicians and music lovers have found value in vinyl records. The artwork is bigger, the sound quality is better, and it’s also more involved. You have to flip the record over, which means listening to music is becoming an activity again, as opposed to pushing play on a Spotify playlist and having it as “background noise". My preferred media format is definitely vinyl. The only time I would buy a CD or cassette is if I see a touring band at a show, and they don’t have any vinyl for sale. Otherwise, I always opt to grab the record.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Mike: My most vivid memory with Downfall Of Gaia is when we played last years Hellfest Open Air Festival in June of 2014. It was by far the biggest show I’ve ever played, with a crowd of 8000 people watching us, and we had a great time. There was a crew that set up my drums on a rolling riser on the side of the stage. Then when we were up, they rolled it out, plugged in the mics and we hit the stage. We had passes to hang out the entire weekend, so we got see some truly amazing and legendary bands from the side of the stage, including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Slayer.
Dominik: Yeah. Definitely Hellfest. This one was something special. Besides that we played a lot of other cool stuff in the past. Amplifest in Portugal was ace. Truly the nicest people ever took care of us and besides that the line up of the fest was just amazing! Also our first show ever in the states a few years ago. We played Boston and we totally sucked! But we were happy to be there!
