Ilydaen [ilidæn] is a post-rock band created in 2009. Thw post-rock label is not so quite accurate while the band is none of what you could expect. It gives more energy than a post-rock band, as well as more occasions to be drown into self-reflexion and vague feelings. It's the way we're trying to give the audience a chance to be close to them. They had the chance to train themselves over 2 euro tours and more than 50 shows, the release of several studio works and they’re looking forward to growing more and more...

The Inquisition: 024.Pray For Sound

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Well, I knew I wanted the band name to have some relation to my ear because of how much that stuff has affected my life. I couldn’t come up with something for months, but then one night I was listening to Steven Wilson’s Insurgentes and the song “Harmony Korine” came on. One of the lines in the first verse is: “Pray, for sound, to quiet the howling” and it just instantly stuck. I’m not a very religious person, but “Pray For Sound” perfectly shows the complete desperation I experienced to hear again.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Not really. Every song has been written pretty differently. For Monophonic, I wrote the majority by recording riffs with my looper pedal and then came up with leads while the riffs repeated. For Dreamer, we did all kinds of stuff. Some of the songs we came up with while just jamming.  Conceiver, for example, was written just by jamming. For other songs, I came up with a “skeleton” and we improved on it from there as a band. Nick came up with the majority of Sleeper while playing with his looper. Chris came up with a skeleton for Sonder while laying down some guitar tracks at the studio. We all added our own parts on top. Day Bringer was written while Steve was jamming on a synth and we were all sitting around the studio. For some of our new, unreleased material, I’ve been opening up fresh, blank Pro Tools sessions, recording a part or two and then moving on. I plan to go back and develop some of the parts into full songs once I have about 50 of these sessions. I’ve also been playing around with a program called Guitar Pro to help with arrangements. With that, I can type in the sheet music for various parts I’ve come up and hear how the layers will sound without having to ever pick up my instrument.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

My influences are pretty eclectic. Music-wise I listen to just about everything. Lately I’ve been rocking Black Clouds, Gates, Thursday, Taylor Swift, Slipknot, Damien Rice, and Jakob. Some of my other favorites include: Between the Buried and Me, Brand New, Coheed and Cambria, Hammock, Manchester Orchestra, Moving Mountains, pg.lost, Pink Floyd, Russian Circles, and Stars of the Lid.I also draw influences from movies and nature/ the weather. At some point I’d like to write an album that is centered around the themes of a movie. Gotta find the right one though!

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

This is a tough question, but I’m going to go with The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky. That album pretty much completely changed how I listened to music. I finally realized music doesn’t necessarily have be technical to be great. There are so many simple layers on this album that come together to create beautiful melodies. Some runners up:Key by pg.lost, Colors by Between the Buried and Me, Deadwing by Porcupine Tree

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Well this is going to be embarrassing… My grandmother bought me my first two CDs.  She got me a Hanson CD and a Spice Girls CD haha. The first album I personally bought with my own money was Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the 36 Chambers. I used to be quite the gangster.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with ?

There are SO many I’d love to share the stage with.  Some that initially popped in my head are Explosions in the Sky, Porcupine Tree, and Caspian. Explosions in the Sky because they’ve had such a huge influence on me and got me into the post-rock world. Porcupine Tree because I think Steven Wilson is a musical genius and I would hope some of that would somehow rub off on me if we were standing on the same stage haha. Caspian is probably the most well known post-rock band from our home town, so it’d be really fun to play with them too.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Yes! Big time! Everyone that has posted about Pray For Sound has been extremely supportive and has gotten us the majority of our exposure, especially outside of the US. As far as being surprised about reaching a specific country…They all surprise me still.  It completely blows my mind that there are people halfway around the world, paying their hard-earned money to listen to our music.

8. Do you support the idea of Bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

Of course! Monophonic and 23:55 were both released as “pay-what-you-want” with no minimum.  We decided against doing it for Dreamer because we felt like we had proven ourselves, but we do still keep it pretty cheap though…Anyway, I think it’s a great way for new bands to get exposure. All of our music is on Spotify. We actually do pretty well on there…I don’t really understand all the negativity. It gives people a chance to check us out, and we make a few bucks off it every month.I’ve also seen plenty of our music being torrented. At this point, I really don’t mind that either. I’m more than happy to have people listen to our music and get to know us rather than just write us off because they didn’t want to pay. If Pray For Sound was my main source of income, some of these answers may be different. Either way though, I fully support the idea of pay-what-you-want and streaming services because it gives unknown bands a way to get some exposure.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Certainly still making music for Pray For Sound. In the next 5 years I have some high hopes for the band. I’d like to accomplish the following: 2 full lengths, a couple US tours, a European tour, get some solid distribution and finally, get some placement/ licensing deals.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

I think it’s extremely important. I’ve always been a huge fan of albums as a whole (rather than singles).  I think you can really tell a story with a full album and the artwork greatly enhances the experience. An album without artwork is an unfinished product in my opinion.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

Tool’s Lateralus artwork has always been a favorite of mine. The vinyl version is a picture disc too which just tops it off. I hate to mention them again, but I also really like All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone by Explosions In The Sky.  I love the way it looks like a painting.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

I don’t really notice a huge fidelity difference compared to high quality digital formats, but I think that’s why most people are buying vinyl now. The huge artwork is what does it for me. Plus there's a cool, raw quality to the sound. I personally enjoy the imperfections of vinyl. It gives the music a little extra personality. These days, if I really like the music or band I’ll get vinyl, otherwise I’ll just opt for the digital album and put it on my phone.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

After playing a show at The Middle East in Cambridge we were all hanging out in our van between bands. We saw probably about 50+ cops drive by in the span of about 10 minutes.  Turns out the people responsible for the marathon bombings in Boston had just robbed a 7 Eleven, stolen a car, and shot a cop right down the street from us.  That was pretty intense.

Pray For Sound recently released their album "Dreamer" on vinyl via Science Of Silence.

Chicago-based To Destroy A City was formed after Andrew Welch (drums/synths/programming), Jeff Anderson (guitar/keyboards), and Michael Marshall (guitar) met through various iterations of previous musical projects. When the three finally sat down together in the summer of 2010, they moved quickly, writing and recording their debut within a year's time. The self-titled album was released by n5MD in September 2011. The remix companion album, Rebuild, was released in 2012 and featured reworked tracks by local scene-mates as well as other artists from the n5MD roster. To Destroy A City’s sophomore full-length album entitled Sunless is due in the fall of 2014. On Sunless, To Destroy A City expands on where they left off, drawing from cinematic, literary, and musical influences to craft a sprawling yet cohesive follow-up. Sonically, To Destroy A City moves effortlessly between delicate ambient passages to beat-induced grooves to soaring melodic peaks. Electronic beat production is intertwined with live percussion, while layers of guitars, synths and pianos forge the melodic foundation of the tracks. The uninitiated may find To Destroy A City analogous to label mates Lights Out Asia and port-royal, and, due to some periodic drifting into similar spaces, the wide-screen ambient guitar duo Hammock.

The Inquisition: 023.Black Clouds

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

It just fit the music...it was a dark period for us musically after our last band broke up. Although, we turned that negative vibe into a positive one by forming this band.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

There is a lot of experimenting with sounds and textures to form ideas. That said, there is often a goal in mind, either thematically or conceptually. Justin and Ross flesh it out on guitar, bass, and keys. Then Jimmy comes in with fresh ears and as a band we piece together the full songs with drums.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Influences (as a band) for the most part are soundtracks, movies, and bands like Nine Inch Nails and Sigur Rós...artists who aim to perform on a grander scale. It's all about setting the tone/vibe and creating an actual experience for everyone's ears and eyes. That said, we all listen to a plethora of stuff individually and have a shared admiration for a lot of bands and artists. It would be tough to make a concise list here.

4. Which is the one album you can’t live without?

Ross: Either Aimee Mann - "Bachelor no. 2" or These Arms Are Snakes - "Easter". Very different, but both are just perfect and have a huge impact on me.
Jimmy: Not sure. I guess Ramones - “Ramones” or Queens Of The Stone Age - “Songs For The Deaf”
Justin: Pretty difficult to choose one, but Sigur Rós - “( )” is a pretty big staple for me.

5. What’s the first record you've ever bought ?

Justin: First LP was Iron and Wine - “Sea and the Rhythm” ( I got into vinyl pretty late - only about 5 or 6 years ago). The first ACTUAL album was probably a tape by Green Day or something in the early 90s.
Jimmy: Wayne's World Soundtrack
Ross: Tape: Metallica - "And Justice For All" CD: NIN - "Broken" LP: Sunny Day Real Estate - "Rising Tide"

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with ?

Nine Inch Nails

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

YES! Knowing people listen to us in Greece or Russia is pretty crazy. There is no doubt that the internet is a huge part of growing as a band. Blogs, YouTube, bandcamp, and even torrent sites are crucial in reaching those places.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

Yes, definitely. Bandcamp really helps smaller artists out namely because of keeping a high percentage of profit from sales. Spotify is also a great service because it instantly puts a band’s music in the hands of anyone with a computer or phone.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Still writing the music we want in a way that is fresh and challenging. Also, hopefully working on film scores/soundtracks, movie trailers, and touring in bigger rooms with bands we look up to.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Yes - it totally is. It’s such an important piece to the overall work - especially in our case where we try to thematically blend visuals with the music and don’t use vocals to convey any message. It’s fair to say that artwork is a huge part of steering our writing/creative process. To us, we feel it's just as important today as it was in the analog days.

11. What is your favorite album cover?

Jimmy: Probably Radiohead's Kid A.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Justin: Vinyl is rad because it forces you to be in the album. You have to pull it out of the jacket, and flip it over. It makes you sit, listen, and focus. Digital is great, but in terms of really connecting sometimes vinyl is more engrossing.
Jimmy: People want something tangible and something that's real. With download cards it also makes sense to buy vinyl because it's only a little bit more than an itunes purchase and you feel like you own something. You can hold it. I prefer digital and vinyl equally. It just depends on the situation at the time.
Ross: I think playing an iPod in the car, on a treadmill, or walking is a way to give background noise or provide accompaniment to a task or activity. Listening to a record IS the activity. No fast forwarding, doing it to speed up a drive/run. The task is putting the record on, caring for it, collecting it, and listening to it.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Justin: Backstage right before we played the 9:30 Club in DC. It’s kind of a childhood (and even adult) dream as a musician growing up in the area - since it’s just such an iconic venue. So, right before and during our show - was just surreal - like WE ARE ACTUALLY DOING THIS!
Jimmy: Headlining the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC with our friends opening the show. Dream come true. #1 Bucket list check.
Ross: We have played some really amazing shows, but I think the first practice together with just the three of us in a room when we made it through our first whole song together as Black Clouds was a pretty refreshing and surreal moment.

Black Clouds recently released their second album "Dreamcation".

News: Ølten's Crowdfunding

What is Ølten? Isn’t it a town?

Ølten is made up of 3 guys who love Werner Günthör, beards, checked shirts and old amplifiers. It’s basically a guitarist playing the bass, a bassist playing the guitar and a drummer playing the moog... After the success of their 1st EP in June 2013, the band is now keen to release a full album, which will be produced and recorded at the Studio Mécanique in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Where is my money going?

It’s very simple, you pre-order our album in the format of your choice to help us finance the costs of vinyl and CD pressing, mixing, mastering and graphic design. As well as receiving a beautiful object, you can also choose to spend some time with us or just look sexy in your new underwear and socks!

What happens next?

After being recorded and mixed by Julien Fehlmann at the Studio Mécanique in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, the album will spend some quality time in the skilled hands of Magnus Lindberg (sound engineer and Cult of Luna’s drummer) for mastering. Mr Tomas Liljedahl from The Old Wind and Breach will be lending us his voice for one track. The packaging will be crafted by talented graphic designer Laurent Güdel. Release planned in March 2015 by Hummus Records and Division Records.

The beautiful and cruel story written by a sadness-filled pure heart.

A mysterious and enormous country, surrounded by the grandeur nature of Eurasia: Russia. This is the second album 'Loud to Sleep' from Jet Plane, a Russian instrumental rock band who are able to clear the wasteland of post-rock music with a cold and bleak sound like a Russian killer winter. Once you hear the opening track 'Laurel Trees/21 Guns’, or the album title track 'Loud To Sleep’, which feature the fantastic sound of a bagpipe that is a musical contribution to the band’s originality, you will be able to find that they are worthy to be called a Russian Godspeed You! Black Emperor. In addition, the fifth track 'sundog' sets a standard of instrumental rock music that is a masterpiece in no way inferior to Mogwai’s 'Two Rights Make One Wrong'.

Their stoic sounds are created by minimum amount necessary of music instruments such as guitars, bass and drums, and accented with bagpipe, violin, and glockenspiel. This album includes only 7 tracks, but it can be said that this chronicle story with 60 minutes is 'The most beautiful punk music in the world’, created in the 'Lost Generation' of the present day.

All we need is a weapon by the name of Jet Plane.

The Inquisition: 022.All Shall Be Well

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

A lot of people ask us where we got our name from. The original saying is from Julian of Norwhich, one of the most well known English mystics of her time (the late middle ages). Not much is known of her life, but her writings have been proven influential. She’s always been revered for her true optimism. This especially shines through in the saying ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.’ (Later T.S. Elliott would use the phrase in one of him poems.) We, however, didn’t get our name directly from Julian of Norwhich. Never actually heard of her, to be honest. A few years ago I read an interview with the american author Tod Wodicka about his debut book, titled (drumroll) ‘All Shall Be Well; And All Shall Be Well; And All Manner of Things Shall Be Well.’ I immediately fell in love with the title and had to buy the book, which didn’t disappoint. The book tells the story of Burt Hecker, a medieval re-enactor searching for his son Tristan. The story is dark, twisted, funny, beautiful. The title’s optimism gets a bitter taste once you’re done reading. I urge everyone to get a copy.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Nothing is set in stone. Usually one of us (mostly Jeroen) comes up with a theme that we then work on together with the whole band. Sometimes it goes really fast, other times really slow. For instance, "I'm a Hunter, Not a Thief" that is on our latest release BLAUWGEEL, is a song that we have been working on even before releasing our debut in 2011. Songwriting feels like a working on a puzzle. We're endlessly shuffling the pieces so that they fit in place.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

When we're writing songs, often we try not to think about it in a musical way, but more as a story. You could say great stories, novels and films are just as much an inspiration as music.

4. Which is the one album you cannot live without?

I cannot answer this question for the whole band, but for me (Bas) personally it would have to be 'Brother, Sister, by mewithoutYou. It's one of those records that makes me feel alive when I listen to it. The answer to this question also really depends on what mood I'm in. Lately I've been going back a lot to "Happy Hollow' by Cursive. That record always gives me a lot of joy.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Michael Jackson, probably?!

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Obviously there are loads of bands that we would be honoured to open for. All of us in the band have great admiration for Blonde Redhead and in some way I feel a sort of affinity with them, so I would choose them.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

For sure. I would say 98% of the people that know us, got to know us through the internet. It still blows our mind that our music is listened to on every continent of the world. Through our music and the internet we've been in contact with people from Mexico to Iran to Japan and back. It's fantastic.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

We support both. We just want to get our music out there. Torrent it for all we care.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Well, after releasing our debut it took us 3,5 years to release another one. I hope we'll be able to get new music out in a faster pace this time. So in 5 years hopefully we'll have had a few more songs and albums out there.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

I would say it's as or even more important than it was before. You only have a small square for your artwork to be seen. So the challenge is to make it memorable. This is something we thought about long and hard. How can we optimize the impact of this little square on Spotify and Bandcamp? What we decided is that we will always use a lot of white space, keep it very clean, always use just 2 colors, and always have the graphic in the same place as the other record covers. This way the covers really become a recognizable series. Apart from that, my day job is working as a graphic designer. So obviously I feel the responsibility to deliver really nice artwork. This is why in January we are releasing a 50 page art book that further explains or visualizes the themes of the songs of BLAUWGEEL.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

I always enjoyed the surrealism of the cover of "Frances the Mute" by The Mars Volta.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

We've had quite a few debates if we should release BLAUWGEEL on vinyl. The outcome is that we would love to do it, but that it's too expensive to do it by ourselves. If there's any labels out there interested in releasing our record(s) on vinyl, please holler. When I order physical music these days it's always vinyl, although I don't play it nearly as much as I should. Spotify is just too damn easy.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Another hard question. Like I said, we just released BLAUWGEEL and so far the responses by our listeners have been great. Every time someone reaches out to us to tell us how important our music is to them is a memorable moment. But if we have to pick one, I would say it would be a concert we did in 2013 for a festival called Stukafest. The festival is quite unusual: it's held in different cities over the Netherlands and in each city a number of students turn their (small) room into a venue for the night. That night we played 3 half hour shows for about 20 people (which were all the people that could fit in the room) and because the audience was so small and so close to us (literally) the performances were really intimate. It was a great experience and we're happy to report that we have been booked for the festival (in a different city this time) in 2015.

All Shall Be Well recently released their second album "BLAUWGEEL".

Broken Cities is a self-produced, five-piece post-rock band from Oakland, CA.  The music explores timbre and dynamics while pursuing a melodic narrative of other-worldly soundscapes. All of Broken Cities' music is released under a generous "pay-what-you-want" system, and is Creative Commons licensed to encourage re-use and remixing.

Their first album is imbued with crescendos and richly layered with reverb-laden guitars swirling around melodic pianos, deep drum rolls and crashing cymbals (think Mono, Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Rós, Do Make Say Think and minimalist composers like Steve Reich).  At the time, the band consisted of only two members, Nick Zomkowski and Tony Lowe, who shouldered all the duties of releasing a record, themselves - from writing the songs, to mixing, engineering and mastering everything - in short, DIY in its most literal sense.

Their follow-up EP, Parable, found Broken Cities bigger in every way, except track count.  The band had grown (there are now five members) not only in number but in musical understanding and sound exploration.  The songs were larger on this release, with more open space to create greater suspense and intensity with far more rewarding build-ups. Broken Cities' has matured from new band to ambitious explorers of other-worldly soundscapes where music is the sole vessel by which to enter or exit these new worlds.

Broken Cities has now completed their third release, a full length album titled Anemoi. It’s 6 tracks bring the quintet to completely new horizons, exploring the depths of our cosmos through sound and raw, gritty passion.  This work finds them having emerged from a cocoon of growth, delivering epic, cinematic journeys through blistering, tension filled tracks and contemplative valleys replete with glockenspiel and reverb-laden guitar beds.

"If anyone's gonna cut my tongue off, it's gonna be me", declares the irreverent lead singer. With ballsy guitar riffs, bold drum patterns and whiskey-soaked vocals, Dorothy's reviving the soulful era of rock & roll that calls for drunken late night partying and more than a few bad decisions that make for good stories. Think Kurt Cobain paired with Janis Joplin. Dorothy sounds like how youth feels.
