EP: Town Portal - Vacuum Horror

Label: Self Released
Year: 2011

01. Rosini
02. Steaming Scrolls
03. Segway
04. Salut
05. Drastic Insights
06. Phantom Time

Town Portal play instrumental rock that crosses borders of genres. Tapping on experience from earlier endeavors in genres like death metal, shoegaze and math rock, the three members bring components of it all into a melting pot, creating a unique niche of original melodies and harmonies, fixated on a skeleton of complex and playful rhythm structures. Under the dogma of forsaking vocals and other superfluous effects, the band throw themselves into a search of new meaningful ways to compose tones over time, with a heavy and dry precision.

After a European tour in 2010 and a minor row of Danish shows, they released their debut EP entitled Vacuum Horror in late 2011. The EP was followed up by another European tour in the beginning of 2012. In Denmark the EP was praised in several large- and small scale magazines, and the opening track Rosini is currently in rotation on national Danish radio, DR P6. A surprising outcome for an instrumental band, with its roots heavily planted in the DIY scenes ethics and methods. At the moment they’re preparing the recording of their debut album set to be released later this year.

News: Kodiak

 "Hey everyone,

we decided to not be Kodiak any longer.
It wasn't an easy decision, but since we don`t have that much time anymore to continue Kodiak with the same compassion as in the last 4 years and since we grew into another musical direction, we decided to bring Kodiak to an end.
We´re currently thinking about the possibilities of a farewell show later that year. We'll keep you informed about that and we'll tell you as soon as we know more about it.
We`re still friends and we still play music together.

If you want to get some of our records, Denovali is having a sale on our releases right now in their online store.
Thanks to everyone who supported us in the last few years in any possible way. We hope to see you again in the future maybe at a show or something like that

The project was born in 2007 as a four pieces death/progressive band. After a year, in 2008 they went in studio to record their first EP called "Atman EP", which was self produced and published in limited edition of a hundred, a unique and different artwork for every copy, containing 4 tracks for a total length of 37'14'' of music.

After the release, in 2009 the quartet started the live activity to support the EP, playing gigs with band like The Ocean, Ahab, In Mourning, Black Sun Aeon and more. In 2010 the band placed 4th to the most important unsigned band contest "Wacken Metal Battle" , and after that they started to create a more complex and different kind of music, becoming a six-pieces post/progressive beast. The band plays on stage as a unique experience performance, giving a lot of attention on strobe lights and atmospheric effects, a massive wall of sound and suggestive video projections for visuals.

In late 2011, the band entered the studio to record the debut album, a concept called "Samaroid Dioramas", engineered at Studio 73 by Riccardo Pasini.

Video: Marriages - Promo

Marriages is a trio made up of Dave Clifford, Greg Burns and Emma Ruth Rundle, all of whom are also in post-rock quintet Red Sparowes. Though both acts are signed to Sargent House—and though Clifford has played with Rundle as part of the Nocturnes—these musicians have found, in the face of their own proximity, a degree of fresh sound together.

“Ten Tiny Fingers” is Marriages’ first single, off of Kitsune, the band’s upcoming May 1 release. As an offshoot of Red Sparowes—itself a group with ties to instrumetalists (no typo) Isis—“Fingers,” at five and a half minutes, could still seem like a shorter track to some. But, nevertheless, Marriages accomplishes its arc; more importantly, it does so while loosening its focus on structure, which allows for a more directly experimental vibe to creep in.

Kitsune was recorded with Toshi Kasai, who has previously worked with the Melvins and Tool, among others. You can stream and download “Ten Tiny Fingers”above is the teaser video of Marriages working in the studio.

Album: Horseback - The Invisible Mountain

Album: The Invisible Mountain
Label: Utech Records
Year: 2009

01. Invokation

03. The Invisible Mountain
04. Hatecloud Dissolving Into Nothing

Jenks Miller’s psychedelic metal / drone project, Horseback, produced an avant-garde sleeper-hit with 2007’s Impale Golden Horn. That record, which Aquarius Records described as “the best drone record of the year” upon its release, boasted four lengthy tracks, each one a vibrant and kaleidoscopic journey toward a manic, inevitable nirvana. More melodic and accessible than most noise records and noisier than most dream-pop records, Horseback’s debut carved itself a niche somewhere between Merzbow and Stars of the Lid, offering a refreshing sound to fans across many sub-genres of psychedelic music.

Horseback began its story in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States in 2006.

Horseback toured in the fall of 2007, including a stop at the fourth-annual Arthur Magazine-curated Million Tongues Festival in Chicago.

Horseback’s next full-length, the colossal and cinematic The Invisible Mountain, was released by Milwaukee’s Utech Records (Locrian, Aluk Todolo, Mammiffer) in 2009 to underground acclaim; it was then released on vinyl by the United Kingdom occult label Aurora Borealis in 2010 before being picked up by heavy-music powerhouse Relapse Records, who distributed the record around the world. Carried forward once again by Relapse’s greater visibility, The Invisible Mountain scored spots on many year-end lists (including Stereogum, Decibel, BrooklynVegan, Verbicide, All Music Guide, and OMG Vinyl).

After the success of The Invisible Mountain, Horseback produced a number of splits with genre-defying shape-shifters like Voltigeurs, Locrian, and Pyramids, and Forbidden Planet a limited black-noise cassette full-length on Brave Mysteries. Horseback’s full-band lineup made selected live appearances in 2011, including a performance at the Bull City Metal Fest in Durham, NC, and a BrooklynVegan-curated show in NYC at The Studio at Webster Hall with Hull, Caltrop, and Batillus.

In early 2011, Relapse re-released 2007’s Impale Golden Horn and 2010’s Forbidden Planet together as The Gorgon Tongue, with new artwork from frequent Horseback collaborator Denis Forkas Kostromitin. Currently, Horseback is finishing their next full-length record, titled Half Blood, for Relapse.

Landforge is the name given to the most recent solo project of Stephan Carter. Drawing influences from post-metal, post-rock, and doom metal, Landforge’s music is a combination of both ethereal ambient guitar parts and pounding distorted riffs.

The exact birth date of Landforge is uncertain. Though a number of tracks date back to late 2009, and plans for a full length album even earlier than that, the first post-metal tendencies in the music didn’t appear until mid 2010. Recording for “Creation Cycle”, Landforge’s first album, started in early 2011 and was completed in May 2011, all done by one person in a bedroom studio, using mostly free software and cheap equipment. Creation Cycle was released on the 21st of May.

Stephan did not just sit back and enjoy the success of Creation Cycle; he went right back to work. With a batch of new ideas, Landforge started writing and recording his sophomore album. On February 15, 2012, Landforge’s second album “Servitude To Earth” was released. This album has a more dense sound compared to Creation Cycle, with song becoming longer and more complex.

Landforge is not done yet. A compilation album as well as Landforge’s third album may be released as soon as the end of 2012.

But it was such a liberating feeling - to write, record and release everything by myself, that I had to keep going. Which resulted in "Reverie", where I knew more what I wanted to do, I got closer to the sound I was looking for. But it wasn't until my latest self released album, "Vildmarken", where I had found my true calling. With both improvements in recording, but also the writing process I had managed to create something I was really proud of." -  Behzad Mehrnoosh

Album: Kasan - Drown

Band: Kasan
Album: Drown
Label: dunk!records
Year: 2012

01. Drown
02. The Battling Eels Of Antibes
03. An Emerald Dream
04. Mindshelter
05. Hydroman vs That Sea
06. Float

Kasan are unique. Easily they play with different styles of rock-music. Instrumental Rock, breathing the spirit of famous bands such as Led Zeppelin or Kyuss. Living the excessiveness of early Motorpsycho as well as the fragility of Mogwai. Despite all these references and influences the band has developed it’s very own sound, rooted somewhere between 70s garage, metal and stoner. The song is the center, arranged structurally rational, still this rationality is facing passionate meaning. Excessively filled with rhythms and melodies, constant forward movement. The band tirelessly seeks emotions. Mostly pessimistic, but always hiding some strange ambivalence, it’s this glimmer of hope that unfolds true beauty. Kasan demands an open mind, the will to set your heart free- music is a drug. Playing live, Kasan have the courage to break their mostly overlong songs with psychedelic jam-sessions. These are the moments where their love for krautrock-music becomes obvious, complexity meets repetition. To embellish this special experience, Kasan use live-visuals on stage.

Kasan has been founded in January 2007 by the three friends, first songs got wrote and the first live show took place in August 07. Since then Kasan self-released a self-titled demo at the end of 2007 and an EP called Soma in march 2009.  Also this year the band developed a live visual concept with two Leipzig artists of Hasirehei. The past 3 years Kasan conquered the stages of Leipzig and Germany by starting in small venues. Until now the band had the honor to support bands like: Rotor, Hypnos69, Gorilla Monsoon, Khuda, An Emerald City, God Is An Anstronaut, Jesu, Wolfes In The Throne Room,Time To Burn, Black Shape Of Nexus,Three Steps To The Ocean, A Storm Of Light.

2010 was the year of Kasan. The band released two split vinyls with German band Kokomo and New Zealand group An Emerald City, they played at the famous Asymmetry Festival, they supported Mouth Of The Architect, Heirs, The Night Terrors, Shrinebuilder and did a small tour in the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2011 they released a 7” split album with Galvano(Sweden). These things had been realized with some help from modern obsession booking & amp Maniyax Records(split with Kokomo release) . The band maintains its artistic responsibility and freedom by creating the artwork and layout of their CDs and merchandise using own pictures and paintings, taking part in the creation of their live visuals as well as organizing music-events in Leipzig. The band is strongly involved in the local music scene, setting up shows for local bands as well as international acts like Minsk, Storm Of Light, Rosetta, Blindead or Tides from Nebula.

Album: Grown Below - The Long Now

Band: Grown Below
Album: The Long Now
Label: Slow Burn Records
Year: 2011

01. Trojan Horses
02. Devoid Of Age
03. The Abyss
04. Minaco II – Nebula
05. End Of All Time
06. The Long Now
07. Malklara

Grown Below arose from the ashes of Timer in early 2011, continuing the path to the full album The Long Now with the same sound, but more evolved. With the rising of this fresh band the decision fell that from then on Matthijs (who previously was the singer of Timer) also took on the guitar and helped the band sound more like it should.

Grown Below may be influenced by the usual suspects (Cult of Luna, Isis, Tool etc.) but they certainly go beyond being mere epigones. Mixing ambient and atmospheric pieces with beastly heavy monolithic blows to the head, their music results in a promising and unique sound that can only be grasped as dark and utterly bleak.

The band signed with Slow Burn Records in June 2011, after finishing their debut album, that was due to be released in September that year.

At the same time the band had already begun creating new songs and ideas for the quick follow-up of their full-album 'The Long Now'.

Grown Below's The Long Now is an alternate version of the end of the world sagas. For centuries people believed the world would come to an end someday. One of the most recurring dates is the 21st of December two thousand and twelve. Grown Below interpreted this idea as the end of time, not the end of the world. They reconstructed a fictional journey into the last days on earth. In an early state, the album describes the awakening of menacing creatures (who are 'devoid of age') who had roamed on earth many centuries before mankind and are now stuck at the other side of time. At some point on the album, time stands still, resulting in the ability for these creatures to cross over the boundaries of time and crawl into our world. They feed on every living soul and while they bring chaos and panic, the absence of time creates an enormous rip in the middle of the earth, called 'The Abyss'. The protagonist decides to jump into this abyss, rather than being torn apart by these entities. He keeps falling downwards in dark matter called 'Nebula'. By jumping in this void, he locks himself up in his own non-temporal environment and brings all time to an end, including past and future. What remains is nothing, no time, no life, no creatures. He is in an eternal state of nothingness, called 'The Long Now'.

The Moscow, Russian Federation instrumental art metal outfit EndName was formed in 2007 by guitarists Sergo Meskhidze and Sergei Kaplin, with drummer Dmitry Musatov (former members of local band Soular).

After making their debut with a four-song EP entitled Dissociation in 2008, the three were joined by Sergei Podgornyi on bass and keyboards (formerly Sur and Barabanda). In April 2009, the quartet took a much-deserved break with their participation in the Moscow Doom Festival where they shared stage with Mourning Beloveth, Mournful Congregation, The Prophecy and Longing for Dawn. In point of fact, their music is more rooted in works by forefathers of post-metal genre Neurosis and Isis than in old school doom metal, and often compared to Chicago's instrumentalists Pelican. EndName is currently experimenting with noise and ambient textures : the bands drummer is also involved with his solo project somny rooted in experimental ambient and techno.

In 2010 guitarist Dmitriy Churilov (also with Cosmonauts Day) replaced Sergo Meskhidze.

Album: Talvihorros - Descent Into Delta

Band: Talvihorros
Album: Descent Into Delta
Label: Hibernate
Year: 2011

01. Gamma
02. Beta
03. Alpha
04. Theta
05. Delta

A year passes by and finally Talvihorros is back with his latest album Descent Into Delta. The man behind this one man guitar driven excursion is London based Ben Chatwin who in addition to Hibernate has had material released through Benbecula, My Dance The Skull and our sister label Rural Colours. Despite only recently forming the Talvihorros project in 2008, Chatwin has been experimenting with sound ever since he first picked up a guitar as a teenager. His live performances have seen him share a stage with the likes of Tim Hecker, Stephan Mathieu and Ian Hawgood to name just a few. Chatwin has to this point juggled live performances and studio work as two separate entities with studio material being culled from sounds derived from as many different instruments as possible and live performances being restricted to just guitar and pedals.

Descent Into Delta marks the blurring of the lines which separate these two disciplines. It was live performance that ignited the production of this record, which began life as a series of live improvisations, these were then selected and edited over a long period of time. During the mixing process the concept to Descent Into Delta was born and it slowly developed through many hours of editing and arrangement. Chatwin became interested in different states of mind, realising it actually produces frequencies or waves - much like sound, itself. When the mind is alert, awake or anxious, these waves are Gamma, at the other extreme, during deep sleep, Delta waves are produced. It was in turn Chatwin's intention that the sounds of Descent Into Delta would loosely depict a journey from Gamma through to Delta, as a kind of experiment to see whether the listener could be subconsciously encouraged to trace this path through sound.

Towards the last few moments of the album on the last track 'Delta', Chatwin was joined by viola player Anais Lalange who added a subtle but effective impact to the closing stages of this record. The addition of this instrument brings a whole new dimension and texture to the guitar explorations of Talvihorros.

News: Bossk - The Time Has Come For The Five Of Us To Perform Together Again

It has been over 4 years since we last played together and in that time our lives taken different paths and the scene that we were once a part of has changed. The music we wrote together has stood up against bands that have come and gone and the songs still have great significance to us all. This band was always about us five, our songs, the live show and being able to play to new audiences.

In 2012 we will be recording a live BBC Maida Vale session, something that as a band we have never done. We’ll be recording 3 old songs and a brand new track that we’ll be writing especially for the session. Huge thanks to Dan P Carter for his support. This will be available on Eyesofsound Records.

We plan to play 2 shows before the end of 2012, one in London and one in Leeds. We hope you will come and enjoy them with us. What comes after that is uncertain.

We are launching a new website where you can find out all details of the new release and the live shows as we start putting all the pieces together.
