Fourteen Twentysix is the cryptic alias of Dutch’ atmospheric rockband, founded in Eindhoven in 2006.

Fourteen Twentysix delicately layes experimental alt/post rock, brooding electronics and fragile singer/songwriter, into melancholic, filmic songs. This is not music for the masses but music that demands listeners to take their time, allowing them to discover something new and different with each rotation. Started in 2006 as a solo project by ex-drummer Chris van der Linden, the project quickly grew into an exceptionally hardworking group that never fails to deliver on stage. The band has shared the stage with bands such as Turin Brakes (UK), Antimatter and Lis Er Stille.

The band, a self proclaimed group of “DIY professionals”, led bynChris van der Linden, is known to take its reputation quite seriously. Resigning from the international band contest Emergenza after winning its first round with a record total audience votes, the band acquired both media attention as well as applause from fellow artists. Openly questioning the moral values of such ‘shootout’ band contests, Chris commented “We aim to be commercial, not sellouts”.

Fourteen Twentysix are an advocate of modern, fast rising phenomena such as social media and free music distribution, has generated over 55.000 free music downloads, utilizing the power of the internet through websites such as Bandcamp, Last.

Hallucinations in red rooms with white spaces on the wall. The specter of Stephen Crane haunts the spaces. And the room. And the mind of Pyramids creator R. Loren, who has given flight to yet another stereophonic masterpiece, this time under the moniker Sailors With Wax Wings. The tale of its genesis has at least a few details in common with the following:

A musical path is born anew under sheets of soft lightning and distant thunder, beneath the heat strobes of the thick Texas night. What hisses slowly behind creaking doors reveals itself after a season of deliberate recombination. The atmosphere boils and dilates; instruments and voices soar skyward toward transcendence. The clouds lapse and disintegrate like the frayed fabric of R. Loren’s nettled psyche.

Finally, the offspring is birthed whole. It breathes the air, then overtakes it. The lift force has both a vertical and forward component. Always onwards, always upwards. In fact, a certain tall, handsome genius at Decibel magazine called Sailors With Wax Wings’ self-titled debut “a towering atmospheric triumph, a kaleidoscope of shimmering guitars and ethereal vocal incantations that cascades from dark and cavernous to sparkling and exultant—and back again.”

As usual, he was right. Sailors With Wax Wings flutters and oscillates seamlessly as one dazzlingly cohesive 53-minute suite. Inspired by the aforementioned hallucinations induced by the work of the late, great Mr. Crane, the timeless myth of Daedalus and Icarus, and a fleeting phrase on a Vast Aire album, SWWW combines R. Loren’s penchant for palpable sonic textures and mood-altering musicality with his desire to explore more melancholy compositions and a male/female vocal dynamic.

An all-star cast of musicians joins Loren in the full realization of his objectives. Their names read like the dream team of a musical mastermind with one foot in the indie-rock firmament and the other in doom-dirge purgatory. Read ’em and, like, weep:
  • Ted Parsons (Swans/Godflesh/Prong)
  • Colin Marston (Krallice/Behold…The Arctopus)
  • Aidan Baker (Nadja)
  • Simon Scott (Slowdive)
  • Dominick Fernow (Prurient/Cold Cave)
  • Vern Rumsey (Unwound)
  • Hildur Gudnadottir (Múm/Throbbing Gristle/The Knife)
  • Aaron Stainthorpe (My Dying Bride)
  • Jonas Renkse (Katatonia)
  • Marissa Nadler
  • J. Leah
  • James Blackshaw
  • and artwork by David Tibet (Current 93) and Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer/Pyramids)
But the proof that any of this ever happened—or that the results are any good—will not be found on a piece of paper or in a document posted on the Interweb. Least of all this one. Better now to stop reading and start listening. - myspace

The tireless and ever-touring bearded men of Junius are releasing their new record, The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist, on The Mylene Sheath (North America / UK) and Make My Day Records (Europe). Preparation for the long-awaited album began in 2006, with month-long writing/recording sessions in such unconventional locales as a bank vault in California, a warehouse in Texas, a farmhouse in Vermont, and a shack in the swamps of Louisiana. The result is a full-fledged concept album, inspired by the life and theories of controversial scholar Immanuel Velikovsky.

From birth to death, The Martyrdom of A Catastrophist chronicles a man whose progressive theories on ancient history and the cosmos were widely challenged by mainstream academia during his lifetime. The album's ten songs are both cinematic and accessible, building to crescendos which echo some of Post Rock's most epic moments, but with vocals, hooks, and lyrics creating focus throughout. Actual quotes from Velikovsky's interviews and lectures are interspersed between songs, providing a sense of narrative to the proceedings.

Junius produced The Martyrdom at the legendary A&M Records studios in Hollywood (now known as Henson Recording) over the course of a year, somewhat guerilla-style, during off-hours when the studio wasn't booked (the band has joked that they were bumped out by everyone from Akon to Bruce Springsteen—literally). The album was recorded by Kevin Mills and Tom Syrowski (Weezer, AFI) and mastered by Dave Collins (Danny Elfman, Black Sabbath). It also includes a 24-page book featuring art by Drew Speziale (Circle Takes The Square) and illustrator Matt Gauck.

While Junius' sound is sometimes tough to categorize, they have cited such artists as Bedhead (Junius singer/guitarist Joseph E. Martinez's uncle Trini was their drummer), Philip Glass, Hum, and M83 among a long list of inspirations. The band has been electrifying rapt audiences with their spellbinding walls of reverb-drenched guitars, haunting vocals and self-made lights since 2004.

Shortly after releasing their first EP, Forcing Out The Silence, Junius began a tireless touring regimen to fan the flames of an already blazing press. Among its accolades, Disclosure Magazine declared the debut "one of the most engaging Dark Rock albums to come out since Joy Division last graced a stage." Junius toured for over 9 months and played over 200 shows in their first year alone, embracing a DIY ethic which remains at the core of the band's ideology.

Both the debut EP and its 2006 follow-up, Blood Is Bright (later released as a self-titled full-length), were recorded by Will Benoit (of Constants), and mastered by Nick Zampiello (Isis, Converge, Torche). Hailed as a “darkly lush epic” by Alternative Press and “genius” by The Big Takeover, Junius’ work is borne of experiments in isolation and asceticism. It’s this austere approach from one of America's hardest working bands that adds a weighty sense of purpose and intrigue to their output.

Album: Yawning Sons - Ceremony To The Sunset

Band: Yawning Sons
Album: Ceremony To The Sunset
Label: Lexicon Devil Records
Year: 2009

02. Tomahawk Watercress
03. Wetlands
04. Whales In Tar
05. Meadows
06. Garden Sessions III
07. Japanese Gardens

Yawning Sons came about via a collaboration between two instrumental bands from different sides of the Atlantic. Last year, Gary Arce from legendary US desert/psych veterans Yawning Man was invited over to the UK to produce a new album by the instrumental progressive electro stoner riff-rock outfit, Sons Of ALpha Centauri. Upon arrival, they started jamming it out in the studio and by day's end they realized they'd tapped into something special. The idea of Arce simply "producing" was scrapped. With both acts heading the musical direction, over the course of a week they wrote and recorded an entire album's worth of material together and came to the conclusion that a whole new entity had been born. It is called Yawning Sons.

With sound files subsequently flying back and forth across the ocean there's now been the additional contributions of lap steel from Gary, as well as vocals from Yawning Man veteran Mario Lalli, Scott Reeder (Kyuss / Obsessed) and Wendy Rae Fowler (QOTSA / Mark Lanegan Band / UNKLE). This is truly where the Californian desert heat has met the chilled Kent coast. How to describe Yawning Sons? It's not simply "Yawning Man-meets-Sons Of Alpha Centauri". One listen to the album evokes the sounds and textures of a dozen different outfits. One of the workers in the studio was heard uttering the words, "Cor blimey, this sounds like Dick Dale playing with Can!". Or think Syd-period 'Floyd decking the halls with some vintage Meat Puppets. Or... wait 'til you hear it. You'll be surprised. It's gonna be good, and it's not what you expect.
