"Sometimes music just happens. You turn the volume up and it fills the room up to the ceiling. You have written nothing beforehand and still it pours out like it was waiting for you to plug in. That’s what happened with this record. Me and Sakis just plugged in and “A Passage Through Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal Axis” came out almost in one go. There is an interesting concept behind that song. I like paying tribute to artists that inspire me but I don’t like doing cover songs. I like taking art and spitting it out as my own. That’s what all the vocals and spoken word are. They are lyrics from bands I like and poems from writers I love.

We need to thank Kostas Kofinas for helping us record and mix this album, Post_Black_Punk for being our spiritual guide, Morphine Social Club and Wyatt E. for sharing the stage with us, Ypogeio for being our live home, John Simandiras and 666MrDoom for supporting us and promoting our music." - Six Steps Above The Earth

Tuber grew up in a sunny place, south of Greece, in an island called Crete. They were hiding from the sun, jamming in dark studios and playing their music in rock caves. As they moved north, sounds became lighter, since they started miss hot ground. Balance came as a result of smash, dark embraced light and improvisation turned into an effortless and instinctive process. Tuber moved their interest into new forms, founding themselves experimenting with compositions that combine mixed styles and sounds from different ground. Focus is now on rock aesthetic flirting with psychedelic atmosphere and a touch of romantic mood. At this time Tuber live in Serres, forming their feelings and thoughts into music and words, still learning how to leave with reality and reinventing it with love.

The Inquisition: 083.Glasgow Coma Scale (answered by Helmes Bode)

1. How did you come up with the name of the band?

One of our friends came across this medical measuring unit for impaired consciousness “Glasgow Coma Scale”. We found this to be the perfect name for performing psychedelic post rock! Nice, too: It evokes associations to the Scottish band Mogwai for which some of us would give their left nut.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

There is a lot of jamming, but Piotr and Marek are pretty much the riff-generators – with Piotr in particular being inspired right before falling asleep (not in band practice!). That is what “Enter Oblivion” refers to. Then we check which ideas we already recorded that might fit to the current theme. Then we start crafting. Finally, Piotr and Mr. S give the acoustic sound an “electronic bypass”.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

I come from a trip hop past with Portishead, Lamb, Tricky or Massive Attack and really like the beats and the vibe. But there is so much great stuff out there in a lot of segments. I recently discovered polyrhythmical minimal jazz from Switzerland (Nik Bärtschs Ronin or Sonar) and kind of rediscovered the krautrock origins of our ancestors (CAN or Neu!). Ahead-of-his-time-krautrock-drummer Jaki Liebezeit just died recently! I had my Drum´n´Bass and Hip-hop phase as well with a New York revelation named Dälek. At home there is some headbanging stuff especially on Sunday mornings. I could go on for hours, but would you print it?

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

AUDIAC – Thank you for not discussing the outside world

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

I fear it was the Miami Vice Soundtrack. Doesn´t sound too much like rock and roll, huh? Well I was young and have no better excuses. Don Johnson with his alligator on his boat just seem to have impressed a 13 year old kid.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Them Crooked Vultures would be pretty cool – three legends in one place! Growl – Nirvana / Jones – Led Zeppelin / Homme – Queens of the Stone Age. Maybe this is a little out of reach. But a lot of whishes already came true: Tides from Nebula, Monkey3, Manescape, Mother Engine, Suns of Thyme… My Sleeping Karma is next on the realistic list. I just saw them last week with Green Orbit. Our gig with Long Distance Calling unfortunately was canceled by the club owner two weeks before the concert due to too few sold tickets in advance. The Euros seemed still to have a deep impact on the mostly male rock community when there is a concert on the same day.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Honestly I am not sure about this, since we are not very well known. Is there any post-rock band how really is? I have seen people from New Zealand discussing our music in world wide web, which I think is “sweet as” and “fair enoughski, mate” (to say it in NZ-English)! I love the country so much and even though I´d rather rehearse than perform this would be the part of the world to tour! Just yesterday I also saw a review in a blog from Glasgow which I think is pretty suitable, too. Your post-engineering blog is special for me anyhow, since I have a lot of contact to engineers. I just love their way of thinking and would say that it is an interesting approach to deconstructing post-music. Are you guys engineers in a parallel universe or full time bloggers? Where are you located?

- post-engineering: For a long time now I'm just one person running the whole blog. This is just my hobby and in real life I'm in IT support. post-engineering's name is an inspiration mixing "School Of Emotional Engineering" band's name, which I find great & unique, and the word "post", which has 2 meanings: posting something on the blog and the most genres I'm dealing with (post-rock, post-metal, post-hardcore etc.).

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide on the price or services like spotify?

Yeah, bandcamp is a good thing! We are on there as well. It´s pretty awkward these days anyhow. Our album, that our label fluttery sells, was online for free download on some website only two days after the release and now is also completely on YouTube. But there is an upside since it helps to spread our music. Hopefully the downloaders come to concerts or buy t-shirts which you can´t download yet. If people actually buy the album, we can make another one! But to be honest: A lot of bands I bought vinyl from or went to concerts I discovered through the internet as well. So it´s a janus faced type of thing. If you need people to notice you it is good being spread, even illegally. If you are renown as a band and try to make a living of it, it is probably disadvantageous. Let´s see how things develop…

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

In the studio in Berlin again with the Kowalski-Brothers working with Thies of the Tonbrauerei on our second album. Yes, it will take that long! But that would be twice as fast as Tool, wouldn´t it?

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Well, with the possibilities of digital media, artwork could be taken to another level. Maybe digital albums should make more use of video or interactive design?

11. What is your favorite album cover?

Are you asking Narcissus about his favorite reflection? Our artwork of course, thanks to Hummel Grafic Design!

Despite this I´ll go for Joy Division, Unknown Pleasures and Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Have you ever spinned a one and a zero around and had a holistic experience? With digitalization there is a paradigm shift towards dematerialization which is practical physical minimalism. And that could simultaneously be the cause of a countermovement towards haptic audio carriers with a more somatic feel. My first memory as a child is my father sitting in front of his record player totally absorbed by probably Arzachel, Cream or Emerson, Lake & Palmer. I own three different turntables (from an ancient Dual to modern 1210er replica), but I still find that these great devices all don´t work very well while riding the subway through Frankfurt.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as an artist?

Great but hard question. There have been many with different bands. Also with GCS it´s hard to pick one. Let me pick two. When we rehearsed the very first time together it was in a microscopic space near the airport on questionable equipment. The two guys threw a killer lick in three-four at me. We didn´t speak, just grinned from one ear to the other. Second moment was our very first gig which happened to be with the great Tides from Nebula from Poland. We only got the slot because we could convince the owner of the club that we had played countless gigs as a band before. First gig with the guys, there was no soundcheck-time, I never had played to a click live before and it still worked out great even though I was stirred up like whipped cream. I also love to recall the unique gigs and times with our band-friends from Manescape and Mother Engine. You guys rock like Carrara! (high-quality marble from Italy – note by the editor). By the way: Thanks for the interview dear post-engineers!

Glasgow Coma Scale was formed in February 2011 by Piotr and Marek Kowalski. The two brothers and trained classical musicians lived their lives between Krakow/Poland, where they were born and Barcelona/Spain, finally settling in Frankfurt /Germany. However, they never got the chance to play together in the same band. Along with the drummer Helmes Bode, the idea has now come full circle. If the Kowalskis are the “head” and “heart” of the group, then Bode delivers pumping blood and a dense connective tissue.

Glasgow Coma Scale is named after a neurological method that helps to assess the status of the central nervous system and classify the patient’s state of disorder. For those who want to know if the coma therapy really works, go and listen to their new record. If you are into psychedelic rock, the new album will expand your universe since it takes the music of the first EP“Apophenia” to an even further level. “Enter Oblivion” released via Fluttery Records in December 2016.

It took quite a long time to put all the pieces together and finally record this album. It contains of new and old songs equally. For instance, the last song on the record, called Birthland is the first song ever written, while the opener Sonda is the band’s latest creation.

Why Enter Oblivion? Have you ever heard of people having their best ideas, just before they fall asleep? This is how lots of ideas on this record were born. Mostly, it was the question of catching the idea by singing it into for example a voice recorder or a mobile before entering the oblivion. So, in case of Glasgow Coma Scale, this very moment is crucial if it comes to generating ideas. You catch it and transfer it later into your songs, or you did not manage to stay awake and lose it. It is that simple.

The song Southern Crosses was written in a rehearsal room in in the German capital Berlin while the band was touring. The special thing about the rehearsal room was its location – that was in the midst of an old cemetery. Surrounded by crosses on the one hand side and being close to a railway station called “Südkreuz” (South Cross) on the other hand, finding the song title was an easy decision.

42 tracks, nearly 5 hours of music! This compilation has been in the making before vol.1 was released and finally I've managed to put the whole thing together! I want to thank all the bands who participated in this and their labels for giving permission to use the tracks and their patience! Enjoy and share!

Let me know in the comments if you enjoy the compilations being so long or you prefer a compilation with around 20 tracks in the comments.
Also the next compilation (vol.3) will  focus on post & black metal mostly and I'm searching for a name. Something like "post-engineered vol.3 (blank) edition". I would appreciate it, if you threw some ideas.

The Inquisition: 052.SVK

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Claus: I think it was Håkon that had the idea originally, it's the title of a childrens book by the author Roald Dahl. In English it's called "The BFG" - The Big Friendly Giant", SVK - Store Vennlige Kjempe in Norwegian. We all thought the mood of the book was a nice fit with our brand of instrumental music.
Håkon: I think it was Kristian.
Kristian: Yeah, I think I actually called Håkon a big friendly giant for some reason, and it just went on from there.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Claus: Sometimes one of us will have an idea; a riff, melodic figure or something, and we build on it from there by jamming. But mostly we just start jamming and playing, and see what comes up. Sometimes we'll do some improvisational exercises, just to take us in a different direction. It's very easy to fall into doing the same thing over and over when you're so dependent on improvisation in creative process, and limiting your options within that context can often give a spur of creativity and take you places musically that you otherwise wouldn't have gone.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Claus: I think all of us have a musical taste that is first and foremost characterized by it's variety, not by any predominant genre. That said, I've always had a fondness of music with guitars (surprise-surprise, a guitarist that likes guitars…), but not the flashy Steve Vai-kinda guitarplaying. I'm more into stuff like Built To Spill, Neil Young, Motorpsycho and Wilco. Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarseth has been a pretty heavy influence as well. But I listen to everything from jazz to classical to metal to weird electronic.
Kristian: As Claus points out we all basically share the fondness of music not really caring about genres. It really changes from week to week, where I can go from metal, rock, ambient and electronica to hiphop, funk and jazz. So pretty much everything as long as it’s good. My main big influences might be stuff like Tool, Mogwai, Motorpsycho, Nils Petter Molvær, Sigur Rós, The Roots, and recently Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds.
Håkon: Yeah, it’s difficult to categorize personal taste like that. But in terms of what influences might shine through in SVK, I think of ambient/jammy/rocky(?) stuff like Mogwai, Motorpsycho, and maybe Do Make Say Think and Eluvium? Our tastes are pretty diverse, but I think the music we make together is a pretty good indicator as to where our interests converge.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

Claus: That's an impossible question to answer. I think I'd get sick of any album if I was doomed to listen to just the one. But there are a few albums that keep coming up, again and again. Jeff Buckley - Grace, Mogwai - Young Team and Motorpsycho - Timothys Monster, to name a few.
Kristian: That’s hard. It would have to be either Tool - Lateralus, Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway or The Avalanches - Since I Left You.
Håkon: Didn’t It Rain by Song:Ohia, maybe? Jason Molina is probably the one musical influence I wouldn’t live without.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Claus: Haha, Iron Maiden - Powerslave. On tape! Bought it a couple of years after it was released, think I got it in -88.
Kristian: Supergrass - In It for the Money, which I still kinda like.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Claus: Last year we did split gigs with Spurv, Caves of Steel and 1099. All three are great bands and great guys, so I wouldn't mind touring with any of them. Another band I've been into lately is Finnish slugde-doom-drone-guys Mr. Peter Hayden. That would be an awesome band to tour with.
Kristian: My friend Lars has a band called Blåtime. Other than that maybe Cult of Luna. That would be crazy fun.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Claus: Certainly. But I don't feel we've really gotten any big attention out there. We've gotten a few reviews, and some mentions here and there. A few podcasts have had us on some fairly heavy rotation, so yeah, it all helps. There are just so many bands out there, it's kinda hard to get heard. But you just gotta stay at it.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

Claus: I don't see the problem in supporting both, at least streaming as a model for distribution. However, I don't think all the services out there now contribute to a fair cash-flow for the artist, or to what's better for music in the long run.
Håkon: I agree. As an end user I love the likes of Spotify, but as an artist I believe their payment model could be more fair, and do more to promote diversity and creative new voices.
Kristian: Yeah. Just as a footnote I think streaming is too cheap as it is. 99NOK(13-ish american dollars) a month is not very much for unlimited music, when one single CD often costs more than that.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Claus: Somewhat bigger fan base, a couple of more releases under the belt, probably done a couple of European tours. Hopefully, we'll have evolved quite a bit musically as well.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Claus: Yes.
Kristian: What he said.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

Claus: Oooo, that's a tough one. Off the top of my head; Tao of the Dead by …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. They have GREAT artwork.

Kristian: Converge - Axe To Fall has some great artwork. Their vocalist Jacob Bannon makes some amazing stuff.

Håkon: Spirit Animal by Zombi has a pretty great cover.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Claus: I think it's human nature, to want to collect and own the things you like and are into in a tangible fashion. As long as music continues to be a very large part of many peoples identity, I think we'll see some sort of artifact-collection connected to it. An iTunes library or a Spotify playlist just doesn't have the same effect as walking into someones home and seeing their record collection. It's much the same with books, I think. Even if we have Kindle and iPads and whatnot, people are still buying books and putting them in shelves (probably even reading them as well). As for what format I prefer; for ease of listening it's streaming, hands down. No contest. For enjoying the full experience (music, artwork, liner notes, lyrics) vinyl is unparallelled.
Kristian: It might also have something to do with people realizing that with lossless streaming you kind of get the same as you would when buying CDs, at least musically. Vinyl is quite different, so the crowd that likes to buy something tangible and love artwork might turn to vinyl instead. I mostly use lossless streaming, but when I really feel like owning an album I buy the vinyl. I used to buy a lot of CDs but that kind of stopped a couple of years ago.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Claus: For me, the best moments as a band is during improvisation/jamming, when everything just fits, and all of a sudden you become aware of the magic that's happening. That's such an elevating feeling, and deeply terrifying as well. It's kinda like being on the edge of a really tall cliff, it's exhilarating, but your really scared of fucking it up too… One specific great moment was after a show last year. This guy came up to me as we where getting of stage, with tears in his eyes, shook my hand, hugged me, and thanked me for a deeply emotional and profound experience. To be able to stir that kind of emotion in people is a really powerful and humbling thing.
Håkon: Cramming all our gear in the car, putting Kristian to sleep in the backseat and then driving for about 13 hours straight through the harsh Norwegian winter to go record our album in Copenhagen is a memory that’ll stay with us, I’m sure.

SVK was formed in 2010 by Music Technology-students at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Today, the band consists of: Amund Ulvestad (synths/cello), Håkon Nybø (bass), Kristian Mäkinen (drums) and Claus Sohn Andersen (guitar).

The wide range of influences (post-rock, progressive rock, jazz and experimental electronic music) is plainly evident in their recordings. Still, there is a sort of coherent method to the madness, which makes their music distinctly “SVK” however we approach the making of it.
