Franco-belgian squad Necrodancer doesn't waste time with warning shots and directly introduce themselves to the world with "Void", their debut album. Formed in 2016 between Paris and Liège by members hailing from various corners of the heavy music realm (Verdun, Daggers, Death Mercedes, Radio Maquis…) the band establishes with "Void" an already personal, hard-to pin sound. Drawing as much from swampy noise rock as from the punkier edge of later-era Darkthrone, these self-proclaimed funeral grungers are as comfortable with surprisingly catchy melodic hooks as with remorseless crust assaults. Recorded and mixed by Amaury Sauvé (Birds In Row, Plebeian Grandstand, Death Engine) then mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Okkultokrati, Nails, Full Of Hell) for maximum damages, Necrodancer's firepower will be hard to ignore.

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

The name of the band is older than the actual line-up. Nevborn actually started more than 10 years ago and the band had a lot of different members before the first album. The sound of Nevborn never ceased to change and evolve. At the same time, the name is a contraction from newborn and never born as the reflect of Nevborn’s journey.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

It normally starts when someone shows a draft to the others and we start jamming different riffs around it. We try to enhance different parts of the song and when we are happy with the skeleton, we add some breaks to give punch and dimension to the track.

3. How this collaboration with Loïc of The Ocean on the new EP  came up?

The idea of the song was to create a discussion between father and son. We we just reached Loïc and asked him if he wanted to be part of this concept EP.He accepted and we were able to blend his amazing voice with Matthieu’s melodies !

4. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Our influences are quite broad. We want our music to be a mix of all the style we individually like and that’s why we have difficulty to put ourselves into a specific music style.

That is a tough question.. We would like to play with a lot of bands. For exemple Arcane Roots, Ulver, Cult of Luna, Toska, The Ocean just to name a few...

8. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

It is the magic from our generation of musicians ! The internet allows a lot of young bands to project their music abroad. Without this tool, it was a lot more difficult in the past for people to reach a certain level of recognition. To answer the question, I’d say that the internet and blogs really helps to promote bands and give them more ‘’views’’ and ‘’followers’’. Fans can also easily discover more music form the same genre and develop their own criticism and musical tastes. None of us thought that our next vinyl would be available in Japan…

9. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

We really appreciate bandcamp. The online platform managed to bring the public closer to the artist. We also have our songs on Spotify and other music streaming platforms and it generates no income but at least we gain some views.

10. Where do you see yourselves in 10 years?

In 10 years, we’ll be all mid-30s… It is really difficult to think of the future of the band, especially if the Nevborn’s ‘’curse’’ strikes again… We hope we’ll be recording some new tunes or in the middle of a European tour. We hope to reach these new goals, but 10 years is a long way to go...

11. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Absolutely ! This is the thing that makes an album interesting. That’s why we try to always associate the concept of the music to the artwork. The goal is to create something that we are happy to show to our listeners. We want the people that buy our albums to see the package as a precious object more than a common CD.

You cannot illegally download a vinyl because behind the music lies a philosophy and an art that is not convertible to be sent on ‘’the pirate bay’’. The object is even more important that just the music itself.

14. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

When we played for the first time at the ‘’Rockaltitude festival’’ at Le Locle in Switzerland. When had the pleasure to play amongst some big names in the music industry and we had a blast !

Dead Register is a genre-bending, monolithic, gothic-tinged, gloomy, melodic, “doom-gaze” based in Atlanta. In late 2013, M. Chvasta (vocals, bass, bass vi) recruited his wife, Avril Che for her bass synth, textures, keys, and background vocal accompaniment. Skeletons of mechanical songs were created with programmed beats, which were replaced in 2014 by the refined drumming of Chad Williams.

Curbeaters are/were kind of like “the father you never saw and didn't know was there, but suddenly he knocks at your door“. At least that's kind of like the case to well-known German acts Black Shape Of Nexus, Ira, Planks and Ultha.

The history

In 2002 all members of the project spent a lot of time on a German message board for underground DIY punk/hardcore/metal and they mutually knew each other from shows and festivals. Several ideas for projects were founded by memebrs of that board – non ever really gave birth to a record. Tom, Andy and Geb met for one weekend to practice and record a few ideas. Ralph was supposed to play bass but couldn't make it to that weekend. So the remaining members recorded the three tracks on this very record. There was never another proper rehearsal or plans to commence the band, but the instrumental tracks made their way through various channels and always got great feedback. The originally intended singer never made it to record vocals, so the whole thing just kind of faded to a distant memory and all members went on to play in some of the most well-known acts in German DIY metal/doom.

Fast forward to 2016

Andy and Ralph both ended up in Cologne, playing together in a black metal band called Ultha. Andy is a professional recording engineer and always kept up hope to actually finish the songs at some point. After an initial push by Timo (Golden Antenna Records) a few years back, to have Ralph record the vocals, the idea popped back up in 2016. Andy just opened his Goblin Sound Studio and Ralph is fairly well known for his trademark lyrics and vocal performance in now defunct Golden Antenna Records act Planks. Ralph wrote some lyrics and tried out the vocals – it turned out to be a perfect match for the three doom laden sludgy rock songs. Now hell froze over and Andy's persistence paid off: 'Time Is Unforgiving', a three song EP and the result of more than 15 years in the making. Limited to 300 records on vinyl distributed by the label which played a major part in why this thing came together after all these years.

Allochiria is a post-sludge band from Athens, Greece. They were formed in 2008, and released a self-titled EP in 2010. In January 2014, they released their first full-length album, Omonoia. 

But on December 2016, Allochiria joined forces with Art of Propaganda for the release of the band’s second album, Throes. Having shared the stage with Deafheaven, Year of No Light, Altar of Plagues, and many more, as well as undertaking their first European tour in March 2015, Allochiria's live experience becomes readily apparent across the vast expanses of Throes. Although their music has often been likened to Neurosis, ISIS, Amenra, and Cult of Luna, Allochiria assert their own identity in the post-sludge realm with their deep exploration of very human themes. With Throes, its theme explores man as a social being, the corruption that defines him in modern societies, his vain struggles, painful routine, and the effect this has in the world around him. 

In that regard, Throes retains the same concept as Omonoia, which has man in its main area of interest. But this time, Allochiria's pursuit of that concept is angrier and more direct, making for an even more intense listen. Speaking directly to mankind, Throes expresses anger, pain, and agony in a higher degree; living beings are being killed, drowned, destroyed, and left helpless, and the rest either cause this or witness it. We mourn a little bit, and then go on with our lives - we are hopeless and weak. This is Throes, and Allochiria are guiding its maelstrom.

Since the very beginning Jagged Vision has been a force to be reckoned with in the Norwegian underground scene. Through vigorous touring and sharing stages with bands like Kylesa, Black Tusk, Orange Goblin, High on Fire, Kvelertak and many more, Jagged Vision has built a reputation of being an intense live experience.

The band released their debut through Kylesa-run Retro Futurist Records to international acclaim in 2014 following a 30 date tour throughout Europe with Kylesa. The Sludgelord said “Jagged Vision up the ante with more bone-crunching riffs played at full force that will leave you breathless through out.”.

“Death Is This World” sees Jagged Vision evolving their roots in hardcore and stoner metal into an intense machinery of heavy riffing. The album consists of 10 songs filled with blistering Hardcore Metal, sure to to wake even the most lethargic listener. Working with producer Phillip Cope (who’s first amendment was that they recorded everything in the highest bpm they could handle) takes Jagged Vision into a faster and more brutal landscape.

There is no compromise, no genre limitations and no rules. “Death Is This World” is a product of raw heavy emotion.

Unlike their debut album, “Harvest Earth” (2014), where vocalist Ole Urke Wik wrote all the tracks, “Death Is This World” is more of a collaborative effort in terms of songwriting. Following the departure of guitarist Daniel Vier and bassist Kato Austrått, Jagged recruited fresh blood to join the ranks of metal excellence – enter guitar prodigy Tommy Jacobsen and axe-man Morten Transeth, whom both help fan the flames of rage necessary for pleasing the metal hordes of the world.

Jagged Vision’s misanthropic agenda is deep set in the failing of man’s interpersonal relations. As the very earth that has been tread upon for thousands of years starts to crumble beneath the feet of its self-appointed master. “Every man for himself” seems to have become the universal law. As technology and culture evolves ever faster, man seems to regress to become more primitive and self-absorbed. Fueled by this, Jagged Vision come off as a rude awakening. spewing venom and pulling off the meanest riffs imaginable.

In the summer of 2012 in Sweden, a group of individuals came together with a solitary goal in mind - to create dark music offset with the smallest glimmer of hope. Instead of being inspired by political or religious themes, the band turned to their own personal and internal wastelands; to see what would manifest from their subconscious, writhing within this very cruel world.

It's nice to discover new bands and if that band's album is a punch in the face from start to finish, with a pause ("Specter") to let you take a breath and realize what's happening, before closure with the longest track of the album, then you can talk about the discovery of the year so far and definitely an early AOTY contender.
