The modern world increasingly lacks of steadiness and becomes an epitome of movement and change. Music as an art is already affected by these recent trends resulting in a growing number of artists that embrace a fl eeting lifespan and play by the rules of a volatile industry. Red Apollo are different in this aspect. Seeing the seventh year of existence after several physical releases and almost 150 lives shows including touring with Black Tusk and Heaven In Her Arms, the members do not have any plans to slow down. Instead, Red Apollo released their third full–length ‘The Laurels of Serenity’ on the 27th of April 2018 via Moment of Collapse Records. The album merges eight songs that were created and recorded throughout the past two years thematising the band’s confrontation with the full spectrum of pathological fears. Music-wise, Red Apollo once again wander with diligence and aspiration in the realms of atmospheric post-metal that draws on influences ranging from progressive metal to post-rock. With such a rich background, ‘The Laurels of Serenity’ sounds thick and massive with a precision and clarity that serves as glue between the soundscapes that every single song evokes. From this vantage point ‚The Laurels of Serenity‘ was released as a special instrumental version as well. The songs were recorded by Falk Andreas at Tonmeisterei in Oldenburg and Dominic Paraskevopoulos at Level3Entertainment Studios in Essen. Mix and Master were also done by Dominic Paraskevopoulos.

Far Behind The Sun – The young, instrumental post-rock/metal band from Kempten (Germany) consists of 4 musicians. Their sound reels in the audience from their daily routine and takes them on an extraordinary listening experience. The band’s songwriting is characterized by various musical components, such as impelling and complex rhythms, harmonic and melancholy melodies, atmospheric sound surfaces, and intense metal elements. The Post Rock History of Collapse Under The Empire

The Collaborative Efforts of Martin Grimm And Chris Burda

In the summer of 2008, we met while looking for bands to collaborate with to keep our creative juices flowing. We had both relocated to Hamburg, Germany for work and because of the move we had to give up our former bands from home. We both found working with several band members at a time in a traditional band setup restricted our vision and creativity, we both needed the space to explore creatively, we seemed to have a unified creativity and vision and a year later Collapse Under the Empire was born.

Our Soundscapes

At first, we didn’t know exactly where we were going musically, but we started with a sort of deconstruction of Post Rock fundamentals and reconstructed them into our unique sound and conceptualisation. In the beginning, we used traditional vocal accompaniment but soon realised that the focus of a song centred on the vocals. We wanted the focus to be on the music itself. Creating a story through sound and connecting with epic and expansive concepts that describe the human condition were important to us. We wanted the music to tell the story and to leave our music open to the interpretation of our listeners. Some of our tracks have some choir vocals, but they are added to enhance the experience of the music rather than as a focal point of the song. There are times when vocals aid in the feelings of hope and progressiveness within our songs.

Our unique soundscapes come from evoking the tension and release of human emotional experience through resonating bass lines, electronic music, dark, despairing guitar chords and dystopian industrial drum beats. We often experiment with and express feelings of isolation, abandonment, and death but offset those expressions with uplifting joy and hope. These concepts encapsulate the enduring human experience and are relatable to so many different listeners by enabling a personal connection to the work we do. Our work is often described as soundtrack music, and that makes a lot of sense because soundtracks within films encourage the viewer’s emotions to help them experience what the characters in a movie are going through and that is exactly what our music aspires to, telling a story that all of us can relate to. We create music that gives an outlet and a musical description of these emotions we all feel.

Our Style and Influences as Post Rock band

With our melancholic melody constructions, we resemble Post Rock, but our style goes way beyond the usual Post Rock instrumental band. Drawing influences from Trip Hop, Shoe Gazing, Synthpop and Progressive Hard Rock we are really about pushing the boundaries of Post Rock by creating interpretive soundscapes that inspire listeners and fans to construct a personal narrative. We use aspects of film music, instrumental rock, dark and electronic rock to produce tracks that tell a story and tie into an overall larger concept. These concepts are relatable to fans because they speak of the trials of human existence.

The origin of our band name

We get a lot of questions about our name Collapse Under the Empire, and we love how fans interpret the name in ways we never thought of as it gives listeners another narrative to personalise along with our sounds. The name Collapse Under the Empire was born from the acronym C.U.T.E. Post rock bands aren’t exactly synonymous with the word cute, Post Rock is hard, and the word cute is soft. We loved the irony. We set about giving the group a title that used the irony of C.U.T.E. In 2008, the world was in a financial crisis affecting millions of ordinary people and Collapse Under the Empire just fell into place and felt right. The name Collapse Under the Empire conjured up dystopian imagery and felt prophetic about the fate of the world and our place in it.

Every Album Has a Story

We find inspiration from many sources and all of the albums tell a story of the human condition. Orwellian in nature, the sounds of Find a Place to Be Safe connect to feelings of the weight of oppression and paint a future under authoritarianism. The intense keyboard and string instrumentals inspire you to look deep within and explore perceptions of isolation and fear. All of our albums delve deeply into the extremes of human emotion. Shoulders and Giants envelopes you in feelings of isolation, fear, and death but with an underlying enduring hopefulness. These concepts are given life through our combination of dissonant sounds and uplifting crescendos.

The 9 Tracks on The Fallen Ones conjures a dystopian journey through societal negativity and will inspire fans to travel through and explore the landscapes of a dark, pessimistic future. Highly interpretive, The Fallen Ones will take listeners into the depths of their inner struggles. Dark and emotional charged The Fallen Ones evoke images of desolation and fear and give fans an opportunity to explore these emotions and relate them to their own lives.

Our Fans

We get so many emails from people from around the world from so many cultures telling us about how our music has acted as a soundtrack to their struggles and about how our Post Rock sound touches and profoundly affects their lives. We frequently hear fans stories and how our music helps them explore what is happening in their lives. Some of our fans describe climbing mountains and feeling a great sense of freedom through our music and how in times of illness our music helped them feel better emotionally and mentally. In the midst of self- exploration or crisis fans tell us that Collapse Under the Empire has inspired them and helped them through the most difficult times and some of the best of times. These stories and our fans connection and interpretation of our music speak to what we try to accomplish with every album release. We also see many fans using our music for their artistic expression. It is hugely gratifying to know that we inspire so many people in such diverse ways.

Our music videos are a collaboration of some incredible talent from around the world. These artists, producers, and directors help us give a powerful visual element to our Post Rock soundscapes. Each music video brings to life the concepts we deal with in our music such as isolation, desolation, fear and death. Some of the videos are film vignettes, and others are entirely animated, and while they all tell a unique story, they all have an underlying connection to the larger concepts that we explore in all of our albums

Curbeaters are/were kind of like “the father you never saw and didn't know was there, but suddenly he knocks at your door“. At least that's kind of like the case to well-known German acts Black Shape Of Nexus, Ira, Planks and Ultha.

The history

In 2002 all members of the project spent a lot of time on a German message board for underground DIY punk/hardcore/metal and they mutually knew each other from shows and festivals. Several ideas for projects were founded by memebrs of that board – non ever really gave birth to a record. Tom, Andy and Geb met for one weekend to practice and record a few ideas. Ralph was supposed to play bass but couldn't make it to that weekend. So the remaining members recorded the three tracks on this very record. There was never another proper rehearsal or plans to commence the band, but the instrumental tracks made their way through various channels and always got great feedback. The originally intended singer never made it to record vocals, so the whole thing just kind of faded to a distant memory and all members went on to play in some of the most well-known acts in German DIY metal/doom.

Fast forward to 2016

Andy and Ralph both ended up in Cologne, playing together in a black metal band called Ultha. Andy is a professional recording engineer and always kept up hope to actually finish the songs at some point. After an initial push by Timo (Golden Antenna Records) a few years back, to have Ralph record the vocals, the idea popped back up in 2016. Andy just opened his Goblin Sound Studio and Ralph is fairly well known for his trademark lyrics and vocal performance in now defunct Golden Antenna Records act Planks. Ralph wrote some lyrics and tried out the vocals – it turned out to be a perfect match for the three doom laden sludgy rock songs. Now hell froze over and Andy's persistence paid off: 'Time Is Unforgiving', a three song EP and the result of more than 15 years in the making. Limited to 300 records on vinyl distributed by the label which played a major part in why this thing came together after all these years.

The Inquisition: 083.Glasgow Coma Scale (answered by Helmes Bode)

1. How did you come up with the name of the band? 

One of our friends came across this medical measuring unit for impaired consciousness “Glasgow Coma Scale”. We found this to be the perfect name for performing psychedelic post rock! Nice, too: It evokes associations to the Scottish band Mogwai for which some of us would give their left nut.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it? 

There is a lot of jamming, but Piotr and Marek are pretty much the riff-generators – with Piotr in particular being inspired right before falling asleep (not in band practice!). That is what “Enter Oblivion” refers to. Then we check which ideas we already recorded that might fit to the current theme. Then we start crafting. Finally, Piotr and Mr. S give the acoustic sound an “electronic bypass”.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home? 

I come from a trip hop past with Portishead, Lamb, Tricky or Massive Attack and really like the beats and the vibe. But there is so much great stuff out there in a lot of segments. I recently discovered polyrhythmical minimal jazz from Switzerland (Nik Bärtschs Ronin or Sonar) and kind of rediscovered the krautrock origins of our ancestors (CAN or Neu!). Ahead-of-his-time-krautrock-drummer Jaki Liebezeit just died recently! I had my Drum´n´Bass and Hip-hop phase as well with a New York revelation named Dälek. At home there is some headbanging stuff especially on Sunday mornings. I could go on for hours, but would you print it?

4. Which is the one album you can't live without? 

AUDIAC – Thank you for not discussing the outside world

5. What's the first record you've ever bought? 

I fear it was the Miami Vice Soundtrack. Doesn´t sound too much like rock and roll, huh? Well I was young and have no better excuses. Don Johnson with his alligator on his boat just seem to have impressed a 13 year old kid.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with? 

Them Crooked Vultures would be pretty cool – three legends in one place! Growl – Nirvana / Jones – Led Zeppelin / Homme – Queens of the Stone Age. Maybe this is a little out of reach. But a lot of whishes already came true: Tides from Nebula, Monkey3, Manescape, Mother Engine, Suns of Thyme… My Sleeping Karma is next on the realistic list. I just saw them last week with Green Orbit. Our gig with Long Distance Calling unfortunately was canceled by the club owner two weeks before the concert due to too few sold tickets in advance. The Euros seemed still to have a deep impact on the mostly male rock community when there is a concert on the same day. 

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to? 

Honestly I am not sure about this, since we are not very well known. Is there any post-rock band how really is? I have seen people from New Zealand discussing our music in world wide web, which I think is “sweet as” and “fair enoughski, mate” (to say it in NZ-English)! I love the country so much and even though I´d rather rehearse than perform this would be the part of the world to tour! Just yesterday I also saw a review in a blog from Glasgow which I think is pretty suitable, too. Your post-engineering blog is special for me anyhow, since I have a lot of contact to engineers. I just love their way of thinking and would say that it is an interesting approach to deconstructing post-music. Are you guys engineers in a parallel universe or full time bloggers? Where are you located?

- post-engineering: For a long time now I'm just one person running the whole blog. This is just my hobby and in real life I'm in IT support. post-engineering's name is an inspiration mixing "School Of Emotional Engineering" band's name, which I find great & unique, and the word "post", which has 2 meanings: posting something on the blog and the most genres I'm dealing with (post-rock, post-metal, post-hardcore etc.).

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide on the price or services like spotify?

Yeah, bandcamp is a good thing! We are on there as well. It´s pretty awkward these days anyhow. Our album, that our label fluttery sells, was online for free download on some website only two days after the release and now is also completely on YouTube. But there is an upside since it helps to spread our music. Hopefully the downloaders come to concerts or buy t-shirts which you can´t download yet. If people actually buy the album, we can make another one! But to be honest: A lot of bands I bought vinyl from or went to concerts I discovered through the internet as well. So it´s a janus faced type of thing. If you need people to notice you it is good being spread, even illegally. If you are renown as a band and try to make a living of it, it is probably disadvantageous. Let´s see how things develop…

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years? 

In the studio in Berlin again with the Kowalski-Brothers working with Thies of the Tonbrauerei on our second album. Yes, it will take that long! But that would be twice as fast as Tool, wouldn´t it?

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era? 

Well, with the possibilities of digital media, artwork could be taken to another level. Maybe digital albums should make more use of video or interactive design?

11. What is your favorite album cover? 

Are you asking Narcissus about his favorite reflection? Our artwork of course, thanks to Hummel Grafic Design!

 Despite this I´ll go for Joy Division, Unknown Pleasures and Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format? 

Have you ever spinned a one and a zero around and had a holistic experience? With digitalization there is a paradigm shift towards dematerialization which is practical physical minimalism. And that could simultaneously be the cause of a countermovement towards haptic audio carriers with a more somatic feel. My first memory as a child is my father sitting in front of his record player totally absorbed by probably Arzachel, Cream or Emerson, Lake & Palmer. I own three different turntables (from an ancient Dual to modern 1210er replica), but I still find that these great devices all don´t work very well while riding the subway through Frankfurt.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as an artist? 

Great but hard question. There have been many with different bands. Also with GCS it´s hard to pick one. Let me pick two. When we rehearsed the very first time together it was in a microscopic space near the airport on questionable equipment. The two guys threw a killer lick in three-four at me. We didn´t speak, just grinned from one ear to the other. Second moment was our very first gig which happened to be with the great Tides from Nebula from Poland. We only got the slot because we could convince the owner of the club that we had played countless gigs as a band before. First gig with the guys, there was no soundcheck-time, I never had played to a click live before and it still worked out great even though I was stirred up like whipped cream. I also love to recall the unique gigs and times with our band-friends from Manescape and Mother Engine. You guys rock like Carrara! (high-quality marble from Italy – note by the editor). Glasgow Coma Scale was formed in February 2011 by Piotr and Marek Kowalski. The two brothers and trained classical musicians lived their lives between Krakow/Poland, where they were born and Barcelona/Spain, finally settling in Frankfurt /Germany. However, they never got the chance to play together in the same band. Along with the drummer Helmes Bode, the idea has now come full circle. If the Kowalskis are the “head” and “heart” of the group, then Bode delivers pumping blood and a dense connective tissue.

Glasgow Coma Scale is named after a neurological method that helps to assess the status of the central nervous system and classify the patient’s state of disorder. For those who want to know if the coma therapy really works, go and listen to their new record. If you are into psychedelic rock, the new album will expand your universe since it takes the music of the first EP“Apophenia” to an even further level. “Enter Oblivion” released via Fluttery Records in December 2016.

It took quite a long time to put all the pieces together and finally record this album. It contains of new and old songs equally.For instance, the last song on the record, called Birthland is the first song ever written, while the opener Sonda is the band’s latest creation.

Why Enter Oblivion? Have you ever heard of people having their best ideas, just before they fall asleep? This is how lots of ideas on this record were born. Mostly, it was the question of catching the idea by singing it into for example a voice recorder or a mobile before entering the oblivion. So, in case of Glasgow Coma Scale, this very moment is crucial if it comes to generating ideas. You catch it and transfer it later into your songs, or you did not manage to stay awake and lose it. It is that simple.

The song Southern Crosses was written in a rehearsal room in in the German capital Berlin while the band was touring. The special thing about the rehearsal room was its location – that was in the midst of an old cemetery. Surrounded by crosses on the one hand side and being close to a railway station called “Südkreuz” (South Cross) on the other hand, finding the song title was an easy decision.
