Post-engineering's TOP 20 for 2015

2015 was a difficult year for me to choose my TOP 20. I had around 50 choices and didn't know which ones to include or not. I thought I could do a TOP 50, but what's the point in that? After a lot of consideration and excluding many of my favorite releases this year, here's post-engineering's TOP 20.

I will make another post with the rest of the releases that I think could easily be in my TOP 20 as well.
This is a personal list so I'm sure everyone would slightly disagree. You can vote your own 20 releases of the year here and please consider that these lists and polls are made mostly for people to listen to bands they haven't discovered yet and not so much about who's number 1.

The Inquisition: 006.Rosetta

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

We just brainstormed at one of our early practices. When it became clear that we were actually going to write some songs and play shows, we figured we needed a name to play under. We wanted something general, that could mean different things to different people, and that wouldn't create specific expectations of what we would sound like. We didn't discuss it very much, just picked a name and went with it.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

We used to jam a lot during rehearsals. Most of the early material on TGS and Wake/Lift was written this way. If we improvised something and liked it, we would just play it again and again until a structure emerged. It was a very intuitive process. The problem was that over time, we developed habits -- and that made the songs start to all sound the same. When we began writing for ADOM, we switched over to a more structured songwriting process. We would talk about song ideas before playing them, and decide in advance what a song should sound like and what sort of parts it should have. It became almost a game, a way to challenge ourselves to see if we could do new and interesting things. The Anaesthete had the most structured writing process of anything we've done, where we were actually making flow charts for all the songs. Sometimes we would come up with something that had great parts, but the parts didn't fit well together -- if that happened, we would sometimes end up moving parts from one song to another where they might work better.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

I (Matt) can't speak for other members of the band, but I think people might be surprised at how little metal we listen to normally. My personal favorite band ever is Stars of the Lid. Everything I do with electric guitar owes something to those guys; they are pioneers without equal. A Winged Victory for the Sullen also gets a lot of play while I'm working and I really like Thomas Koner and most of the stuff on Kranky Records. In terms of metal, I've been listening to a lot of death metal in recent years, like Decapitated, Wormed, Ulcerate, and Gorguts. And everyone in Rosetta likes 90s hardcore, especially the stuff Hydra Head was putting out around 1997-2000.

4. What's the first record you've ever bought ?

So embarrassing -- probably one of the Punk-O-Rama compilations. Or maybe it was a Nirvana CD? Hard to remember. Possibly Rage Against the Machine, which I still love.

5. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with ?

Usually the bands I can think are way out of reach. Maybe Jakob, or Pallbearer. My favorite bands to tour with are bands that don't sound too much like us and are nice, easygoing people. That's one reason why we've toured so much with City of Ships over the years.

6. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

I think the internet is the main reason we ever were able to tour outside the US. We've never had very good distribution overseas, so it was mostly just people hearing us online and telling their friends about it. I was pretty surprised that we had a lot of fans in Russia, for example. I recently did an interview with a zine in Iran! That was a big surprise. And we are going to tour China this summer, which is a great privilege.

7. Do you support the idea of bandcamp, where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

We much prefer Bandcamp to any other digital platform. It provides fair compensation to the artist in a way that few others do. Spotify seems to be mostly about letting people download legally, but doesn't care about compensating the artists fairly. So listeners can download without feeling guilty, I guess. But it's iTunes and Spotify that are making money from that, not bands themselves.

8.Your latest album, “Anaesthete”, was digitally released as “name your price”. It’s rare a big band like Rosetta to release something and let the fans to decide how much they pay for it. How did you come up with this idea and was the acceptance of the fans as expected?

It was mainly a recognition of the times we live in. The internet has made most of the music industry machinery obsolete. You no longer need all that promotion and distribution to be heard around the world. So it makes sense to cut costs and simplify the process so that the band can give music directly to listeners. It allows the band to be financially sustainable, and the fans to get the music more easily and for cheaper. We were very happy with the response to the digital release -- it has done better than any previous release and thousands of new people have heard our music for the first time. Very exciting. We are still thinking about the pricing model and whether we might want to change that in the future, but from here on we will be self-releasing as much of our music as possible.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Probably touring less, but still making music. I think we might end up playing fewer shows but releasing a lot more new music. In the past we've put out a full-length every 3 years or so. I think in the future it might be every two years or even a major release every year. Because the self-released digital versions break even, then we don't have to save money or tour for long periods to afford recording time.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

It's probably less important that it used to be. Or maybe its importance has changed. Before digital distribution, the artwork was meant to tell you something about how an album sounded, by using recognizable visual cues. There's no need for that anymore, since people can hear the album before they buy it. So it creates more freedom for the artwork to be weird, or experimental, or challenging in some way.

11. What is your favorite album cover?

My favorite album cover of ours is Wake/Lift. The tower imagery has a lot of personal meaning for me.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Most of the music I listen to is lossless digital (while I'm doing other things), but I do buy LPs occasionally for my collection. I think the larger format of the artwork is worth paying extra money for, and I do enjoy the way that vinyl demands more complete attention than digital music. Vinyl functions as a collector's product that you buy when you really love something. It's great to have that available.

13. What's the funniest story or moment as a band?

There are so many. It's hard to say. There was one time that we stayed with my mother-in-law on tour, and BJ managed to break a tile shelf in the bathroom and cut himself pretty badly. Armine ruined all of my mother-in-law's towels trying to get the bleeding to stop. I got in a lot of trouble, haha.

14. Do you have a new release or tour planned?

We have an EP coming out this year on Translation Loss records. It will probably be our last traditional release with a label. The material was recorded over a year ago but just hasn't been released yet. We'll be touring China this summer. And we're working on writing some new material with Eric from City of Ships, which should be interesting.

Lunarmare are a Greek band that play psychedelic/space rock. The truth is that I was impressed with the production, melodies and the album as a whole, that only few Greek bands have managed to do so! A really great work, which can place them among Monkey3, My Sleeping Karma and Mars Red Sky.

Danish sextet, Tales Of Murder And Dust, was formed in 2007 with the desire to play noisy and cool rock music. Drawing on inspirations from especially surf music and film scores from classic Spaghetti Westerns, the band quickly gained the attention of the Danish press. When the band released their first EP in 2009, called Peyote, Tales Of Murder And Dust was critically praised for their slow and dreamy soundscapes with attention to folk-like details.

Tales Of Murder And Dust have spend the years following Peyote honing its musical expression even further, approaching a much more shoegazing sound, while supporting artists such as The Black Angels, Crystal Stilts, Wooden Shjips, and The Blue Angel Lounge.

On the 20th of March 2012 Tales Of Murder And Dust finally released their long awaited debut album: Hallucination of Beauty is an awesome thought-through record in the name of noise rock and shoegaze, yet with an increasingly obvious psychedelic touch, not least in the instrumentation, which often focuses on strings, percussion and sitar.

On June, 6th they released their second EP by the name Skeleton Flowers.

Tales Of Murder And Dust is Kathrine Kaspersen, Kasper Lund Resen, Jacob Korsgaard Jensen, Kristoffer Vilsgaard, Christian Sinding Soendergaard & Simon Toftdahl Olesen.

Imagine, if you will, that something has gone terribly wrong. Beneath the incessant, howling wind from the barren terrain beyond, the only discernible sound, the rhythmic gasp for breath from your own parched throat. Scanning the distance, mirages dance like radiation on the horizon. Can you believe everything you see? Though prophets had long foretold, you cannot help but mourn the mark of time, the metronome of human history that shadowed your former existence. Now, with stumbling step you must unclench white-knuckled fists and begin to travel, never forgetting the shadowy night of the past but willing to risk this primal step into the light of day.

Bent equally on bristling psychedelic squall and driving motorik, Verma emerged in the wake of an experimental improvisational collective. Blending a wide range of influences from proto-metal, minimalism, electronic, space rock and drone, the group constructs and explores cinematic sonic landscapes. Verma is amoebic in nature, coexisting with the mechanical. The driving rhythm section creates a solid architecture for swirling guitars and haunting vocal melodies, all beneath a haze of sweeping synthesizers. This repetitive dervish of sound rises from dark roots to a meditative plane, at once the atmosphere of metamorphosis and cerebral introspection.

Album: Plastic Violins Of Darkness - Plastic Violins Of Darkness

Year: 2013

Tracklist
01. Oculus Non Vidit, Nec Auris Audivit

Plastic Violins Of Darkness is a one-man army from Leipzig with a self-released debut of atmospheric, stoner infused space rock that, though dark and heavy, escapes gravity and any hints of oppressiveness with a wide-open vista of sounds. Taking leads from 90s electronic ambient and post-industrial music, Plastic Violins Of Darkness also tips its hat to metal without relying on the repetitive riff. Cuts like the cascading Triskaidekaphobia offer up the requisite grind, but going for the patient slow-burn gives Plastic Violins Of Darkness a good dose of enigmatic expanse that keeps it free-floating without taking away from the heft. Full of texture and ‘unavoidable artificial aspects,’ Plastic Violins Of Darkness keeps the journey moving forward and swinging wide without meandering into mopey formlessness. With flight times between 12 and 20+ minutes, it would be easy to veer off into the void and lose your way—and there is much in Plastic Violins Of Darkness to make you feel unanchored and untethered—but our pilot keeps purpose in mind as the tracts of space go by. All build and elongate, some slowly whiplashing back into themselves with a rubbery and fat thickness that gives the listener maximum chewing satisfaction. - mratavist.wordpress.com

Following the meaning of the album title ("Soma" is the intoxicating drink of the gods), the instrumental psychedelic groove rock of the German quartet enhances the consciousness in a truly hypnotic and bewitching manner. The multilayered compositions move skilfully between heavy rock riffs and enchanting melodic parts with a high level of calmness and beauty. "Soma" is visually complimented by Sebastian Jerke’s artwork that is filled with astonishing details and beauty.  "Soma" offers the perfect movie soundtrack to everybody’s own inner journey. Cave In is an alternative/metalcore/Post-Hardcore band that formed in 1995, in Methuen, Massachusetts.

The group’s early work on Hydra Head Records was more extreme and chaotic in the style of bands like Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan, but their later output appears to be influenced by a wider range of styles. Their 2003 album Antenna (released on RCA Records) has had more success than previous albums and enabled the band to play the second stage on the 2003 Lollapalooza tour. However, playing Lollapalooza didn’t garner the band enough financial success to prevent them from being dropped from RCA Records’ roster. Although the albums before Jupiter had alluded to melodic yearnings within the group, the throat injuries of lead vocalist Stephen Brodsky clinched the band’s decision to move forward with the group’s present, more euphonious sound and abandon their metalcore leanings.

Most of Cave In’s recent material can be categorized as space rock, using themes centering around space. Examples of this are the songs Jupiter and New Moon, album names Jupiter and Antenna, and the band’s singular brand of resonating ambient “spacey” guitar effects they incorporate into their songs.

It’s been six years since their last full-length and though this, Cave In’s fifth studio album, is more ‘Perfect Pitch Black’ than the rest of their discography, it’s also completely different to anything the band have ever released. When time is on a band’s side marvellous things can happen, and ‘White Silence’ is proof of that. Two years in the making, this is by far the most experimental and diverse record Cave In have made to date. The riffs and volume are still present but then there’s the layering (‘Iron Decibels’), the acoustic closer ‘Reanimation’ and the static noise ‘White Silence’. This is a grower not a shower but persevere because ‘White Silence’ has been worth the wait.

Formed in 2007 originally by the name of Voyager, this band released their initial mission statements in the form of a self-titled EP in 2008 and a vinyl-only split with Philadelphia’s Monolith in 2010. Following around two years of complications and a handful of live appearances, the quintet has now resurfaced under the revamped VYGR moniker. Embracing a somewhat experimental mindset alongside a crushing sludge-meets-doom-meets-spacey rock vibe, the band victoriously fuses melody and dynamics together with atmospherics and punishing metallic aggression. Fans of the likes of Cult of Luna, Neurosis, Old Man Gloom or Crowbar will surely find something of high value with VYGR’s debut full-length.

Galactic Garbage is a highlight, with its almost stonery groove, its cool minimal droned out space rock middle, and a killer chugging second half. So is The Hidden, textured and dynamic and melodic, the synths way up in the mix, adding a sort of sci-fi prog element to the loping post rock doomisms, not to mention one of the best little chunks of guitar harmony EVER, we wish the song was 10 minutes longer just so that part would never end.
And it’s those guitar parts, the harmonies and leads, that definitely elevate this stuff, adding a distinct melodic and almost poppy component that works surprisingly well amongst the chug and pound.

Album: Mugstar - Lime

Band: Mugstar
Album: Lime
Label: Important Records
Year: 2010

Tracklist
01. Sunburnt Impedance Machine
02. Serra
03. Radar King
04. Beyond The Sun
Download

Mugstar's third album (their second on Important Records) maintains the power and heaviness of sonic assault laid out in their previous releases whilst extending musical manoeuvres and textures into new territories.
Sunburnt Impedance Machine moves through driving riff passages with soaring guitars and voice recalling touches of early Pink Floyd before locking into a repetitive keyboard and drum driven outro, - power on, power on!
Serra is an extended voyage through a shimmering Krautrock landscape, continuous and expectant grooves that call to mind a turbo-charged Neu! - combine with heavy waves of churning Minimalist synth ala Phillip Glass or Steve Reich. Clinic’s Hartley guests here – adding distant bursts of haunting clarinet skronk - inducing flashes of Nik Turner or Beefheart (you gotta hear it).
Radar King launches with mesmeric drums and bass whilst guitars weave and build to near climax before descending to an eerie space – hanging, drifting with a stretched moment of tape fx weirdness before the energy inevitably re-emerges, it builds and charges with looming and crunching guitars to a colossal tornado apocalypse finale. A noisefest Sonic Youth would revel in.
Beyond The Sun closes in a more reflective mood with incessant rhythms punctuated by arpegiated synths and distant voice evoking a feel of pastoral phsycadelicism. The mantra-like effect driven this time with restraint, atmospheric shifts verge on enlightenment and dark uneasiness.
Take the list of band names mentioned above, add a few others along the lines of Bardo Pond, Oneida, Circle, Kinski, – wind the intensity and volume levels up to blistering and you’ll be entering the universe of Mugstar.

Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent. Taking their name from an obscure Sam Peckinpah film reference, this quintet hails from Marion, a small town nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, where they have concocted a ragged, burly brand of modern psychedelia over the course of two self-released CD-Rs and an album.

Their forthcoming new album combines classic 70's psych rock, Caustic Resin, Neurosis like dirge, gooey sludge metal, blues and early country music, Hawkwind style spacerock explorations, and the expansive fire rock of late 70's Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Quite a heady mix, but "Eat The Low Dogs" ties these influences and stylings together with a righteously loose energy as the band works out extended riff feasts littered with spacey theremin strains and some of the coolest molten synthesizer woosh this side of Comets On Fire, resulting in 9 jams of awesome life affirming heaviness.

At just under an hour long, the band keeps it dynamic and ever changing as they move from the moving, distortion-caked country/space rock sludge. Trippy, rocking, crushing, this is a stellar new album from U.S. Christmas.
