Nils Frahm has declared a Piano Day! A new annual celebration of the instrument he loves so much, which takes place on the 88th day of each year, cause that's the number of keys a piano has.

"Piano Day is intended to be the most joyful of all holidays," says Frahm and what a better way to celebrate his newly declared day than releasing a new album called "Solo" via Erased Tapes and making it free for anyone to download! Of course the solo piano LP is also available on vinyl, CD and iTunes. All proceeds will go to help piano builder builder David Klavins build his latest model, the Klavins M450, with a prototype of which Frahm's new album was recorded. You can also donate here.

04. Shadow Play (After Dark Reprise)

There’s always private pleasure in seeing beauty where others don’t. Sometimes it’s just a case of the personal outweighing the spectacular but in a part of the world as vast and stunning as Yorkshire, the abundance of scenery makes finding that place an infinitely easier coincidence. Ilkley or ‘Heather Spa’ is one such place for 36 aka Dennis Huddleston. A moorland area on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it’s served as both a place of escape and inspiration.

“It’s a place I’ve visited many times at various stages of my life,” he begins, “coming from Bradford, which has had its fair share of social and economic problems over the years, Ilkley provided an escape from the city and is somewhere me and my friends spent many days and nights. It isn't the largest, nor the most beautiful countryside in England, but it has an undeniable charm that’s felt by everyone who’s visited.”

You feel that connection throughout ‘Heather Spa’. It’s one of familiarity and rejuvenation with the exhale of the strings evoking happiness and a gazing contentment. ‘Heather Spa (Burning)’ is just as poised and gentle with its slow, weaving melodies and whilst it’s more clouded and subdued, it leaves a determinedly resonant impression.

“There was a huge fire in 2006 which destroyed vast areas of the moorland,” Dennis explains. “I had visited it only a few days prior and the lush green land was replaced by charred cinders, completely decimating the landscape. It was quite a sight to behold and there was an undeniable melancholy in the air. Reseeding efforts and the tough will of nature has reversed most of the damage and Ilkley Moor is alive once again.”

The initial inspiration for the ‘Shadow Play’ album, this final instalment of ‘Heather Spa’ marks the culmination of Dennis’ personal trilogy, and helps the ‘Heather Spa EP’ feel like a very natural conclusion to a journey of transition, progression and redemption.

"It's come full-circle in a way,” Dennis muses, “Heather Spa as a concept was the catalyst for my latest album 'Shadow Play' and you can see three distinct yet fully-connected chapters on what is a single story; the inception with Heather Spa, the realisation with Shadow Play, and finally with this EP for the ASIP Places Series, an epilogue. I think they're some of the most emotional pieces of music I've worked on and I hope you enjoy taking this final journey with me, right back at the place where it started."

These are the various unreleased and unfinished remnants of the Listening Mirror project that ran from October 2009 until January 2013.

Much of the credit for the project must go to the amazingly talented Kate Tustain, without whom the project would never have got off the ground.
I will be forever grateful to her for the joy and beauty that she brought to our early recordings, and wish her love, peace, and success in everything she does.
Thanks are also due to my good friend Gary Warner who introduced Kate and I to each other.
There have been quite a few other collaborators over the years, Jon Frost, Sophie Kazandjian, Wil Bolton, Sarah Maria Raun, and of course my dear friend Alicia Merz.
I hope that you have enjoyed the drift that we have taken together, and that you will join me as the music evolves.

Keep checking back - If I find any more tracks, I'll add them to the album.

Thank you

Jeff

EP: Tyler Etters - The Geometrie Of Our Lost Cause

Band: Tyler Etters
Album: The Geometrie Of Our Lost Cause EP
Label: Endless Field Studios
Year: 2013

Tracklist
01. Immemorial
02. Generative
Download

“The Geometrie Of Our Lost Cause” – the first release from Tyler Etters, is split into two 15 minutes songs and released on digital and cassette. Listen to the first track and it’s easy to understand why the artist chose this imperfect medium for the physical release. The album has a timeless quality to it. It breathes and has a soul. The first piece, “Immemorial” is an ever-changing semi-ambient track that feels very introverted, almost like Tyler is searching for something within himself. The second piece, “Generative,” is an experiment in algorithmically generated music. Tyler meticulously bounced down 100 different versions of “Generative” to cassette tape. As cassettes are purchased, the correlating versions of “Generative” become unlocked for everyone else to download. Tyler Etters’ first release is a beautiful display of how electronic music can still be sincere and uninhibited. Recommended for fans of Brian Eno, Tim Hecker, and GY!BE.

'Immemorial' is made up of several movements. They are:
I. The Forgotten Distance
II. Time Slopes
III. By The Train Tracks (w/ Arthur)
IV. Hazey Power Plant, 1001 Drones (For Paul)
V. At Another Working Gate

'Generative' is actually 1/100th of a much longer piece. Each cassette is dubbed with a different section. The original intention was for everyone to download a random copy of 'Generative' from his website each time, but alas that strategy proved exceedingly complex to integrate the current media dissemination tools at his disposal. So, this section of 'Generative' is from is from Tyler Etters' cassette.

Logreybeam (aka Gabriel Morley) re-emerges from his studio in Los Angeles after years of collecting instruments, obscure noise gadgets and designing custom effects. He applies years of electronic music production and training from Cal Arts Academy (BA in Music Composition) to his latest projects, which range from ambient layers under electronically eroded recordings to melancholic multi-tracked instrumentals.

Perhaps is a 37 minute album lost in time. Between it's lonesome pianos and wailing accordions, one can hear the cynicism of the past looming on us. It is a romantic orchestration to an old, familiar, forgotten movie. A bizarre yet sweet perfume.

All songs written, performed, and recorded by Gabriel Morley
except ' My Own Home ' written by Robert and Richard Sherman, additional vocals on ' Melody Pines ' by Janice Marder, vocals on ' This Torment And This Thought' by Julien Neto.

It is mastered by Shawn Hatfield at Audible Oddities.

For someone who thinks it's difficult to describe music in general it's even more difficult to describe the soundscapes of Birds Of Passage. The influences of Alicia Merz, the girl behind Birds Of Passage, are her memories, breathless-inspiring cold winds, the smell and atmosphere of a spring day, smoking cigarettes, sunshine and shadows. As a mixture of all these elements and a minimalistic experimental instrumentation you could describe her music as follows: sometimes shy, sometimes more energetic ('Fantastic Frown') but always intensely and extremly private. Listening to her debut record 'Without The World' is like sharing one long day with Alicia and her thoughts in the diverse landscapes of her home country New Zealand.

Alicia doesn't need the bombastic spectacle of a band to evoke emotions, with the help of different instruments, used in a minimalistic way and combined with field recordings she doesn't create specific songs, she builds up a mood. You maybe can describe Birds Of Passage as a singer songwriter for people who don't like singer songwriter music. There's no typical song structure, there's no melody to chase after ' but there's a development which absorbs you and which makes you start to think about elements you block out in your everyday life.

Rafael Anton Irisarri is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist and media artist based in Seattle, Washington, predominantly associated with post-minimalist, drone and ambient music.

He is also known as the main member of electronic music/shoegaze act The Sight Below (on Ghostly International).

His placid compositions utilize ostinato motifs containing short melodic phrases. Reverb-drenched guitar textures, drones, field recordings, submerged piano notes, strings and minimal electronic counterpoints all contribute and converge equally in the music to create an oceanic experience that can be both epic and subdued. His music has been described by The Wire contributing writer Jefferson Petrey as "a dual perspective close-up focus on the micro textures of rustling static-filled sonic surfaces with the wide-open distant tree lined horizons of sunset at dusk."

Irisarri cited in an interview with German electronic music magazine De:Bug as been inspired by Mahler, Satie, Debussy, and Wagner, as well as Kevin Shields, Robin Guthrie, and Harold Budd.

Jodis, an entirely new outfit involving James Plotkin, Aaron Turner and Tim Wyskida, is a modern exploration of restrained sonic minimalism and tonal/textural density.
What might you expect from a band made up of two parts Khanate, and one part Isis / Grey Machine / House Of Low Culture? Probably nothing as pretty and haunting as this. That's right, we said pretty. We were definitely expecting some crushing slo-mo heaviness, figured if that much of Khanate was involved it would have to be screechy and torturous.
And while Jodis is doomy, it's also moody, and atmospheric, slow and spare, spacious and strangely lovely. Occasionally the guitars rev up and get way louder, and it sounds like the band might explode into some sort of bellowing dirge, but instead, they sprawl into an ominous creep, the guitars shimmery, the notes spaced way out, as much about the decay and overtones as the initial note or the overall melody. The vocals are weary and washed out, reverbed and down in the mix. If anything this reminds us of some classic slowcore, maybe Codeine or Seam, albeit a little more abstract, a little less indie rock, but the same sort of moody drift, the same kind of minimal melody, emotional and dark and haunting and dreamlike.
Surprisingly, the drums are super restrained, in fact, the first few tracks sound almost drumless, minus a few cymbal shimmers, some flares and accents here and there. On "Secret House" the drums are active, flurries of fills all over the kit, but not for bombast, again for texture, almost like playing chords on the drums, there are some harsh vox on "Secret House", and they almost sound out of place, disrupting the strange slow tranquility. But once we move on to the next track, we're back to that gauzy melodic drift, the drums again super skeletal, the guitar drifting in the ether, the vocals choral, almost monk-like, super meditative and ethereal.
And the rest of the record plays out in a similar fashion, long drawn out slow burning epics writ small, the three exploring the space around the notes, finishing off with the gorgeous 9 minute "Slivers", the guitar unfurling a fuzzy blurry drone, the drums more active, a bit tribal, but still muted, and the vocals a falsetto off in the distance, the track, heaving and pulsing and shimmering, before slipping into a more abstract drone and then blinking out.
Some seriously gorgeous stuff, a surprise new favorite for sure, getting lots of play late at night, lights turned low, consciousness at rest, on the cusp of some other plane...
