Ashes And Iron are back after 6 years and what a comeback! The Wind Takes A Side captivates the listener from the first second to it's last and in the end you just can't get enough of it and wish there were more tracks! This is one of the best releases of 2014 and surely the best post-metal EP I've heard in the past few months.

Ashes And Iron are a 4 piece downtempo-posteverything-instrumental outfit from St. Louis, MO.

"The Wind Takes A Side, the second release from St. Louis' downtempo-instrumental-indie-metal outfit Ashes And Iron is a dark, cathartic ride. A dystopian soundtrack where sweeping, visually evocative tracks move from crisp, telecaster driven layers of harmonized gloom to the wide open roar of unforgiving despair, all songs laced with mournful melody. Midwestern delivery dominates here: a muscular, propulsive rhythm section and angular, cascading waves of guitar fill an expansive canvas. Ashes And Iron take no shortcuts and The Wind Takes A Side drones, slashes and burns proving again the beauty to be found in perfect desolation."- Andrew Elstner (Torche)

The history of Koloss began in the late summer of 2007, in a small town called Vetlanda, when longtime friends Alexander Johansson and Cristoffer Pinaitis Karlsson decided to start yet another band together. They had played together before in several bands that had broken up for whatever reasons. So Alexander talked to Oscar Siggeström, a guy he worked with as an electrician, and asked if he was interested to start something up. He was, and with him came guitarist Victor Clausson. The band was now complete and started writing some songs together. At this point the line-up was Oscar on drums, Victor on guitar, Alexander on guitar and Cristoffer on bass and vocals.

Most of the songwriting was made by Alexander and Cristoffer and that led to Cristoffer taking over the guitar playing from Victor, and so Victor was left playing bass. This would be the line-up for their first gig at the local festival "Sandskogsfestivalen" in May 2009. In the summer that followed Victor explained to the other guys that he was'nt happy playing bass and that he wanted to play the guitar again. So Alexander stepped in on bass and Victor and Cristoffer were now guitarists of the band. This would be the line-up for their second gig, once again at "Sandskogsfestivalen", in September that same year.

Later that fall Victor left the band and so Alexander went back to playing guitar and the search for a new member began. The guy for this job would turn out to be Henrik Hedberg. So the band started rehearsing a lot and in the beginning of 2010 the band decided to record their work. And so in February 2010 the guys borrowed some equipment and cleared out their rehearsal space. The only thing left in there was Oscars drums, surrounded by a cage of microphones, a sofa with Alexander's computer in front of it and a coffeemaker. And so began the making of "End Of The Chayot". Victor was there through most of the recording sessions to film the progress and to lend a helping hand when needed.

The recordings were completed sometime later that spring and the guys met up at Alexanders to start the mixing process. They took several long breaks during that summer and early fall but at the end of November "End Of The Chayot" was complete.

OM is a psychedelic rock/metal duo from San Francisco, CA formed in 2003 by the rhythm section of the disbanded stoner-doom metal band Sleep. The band’s first three albums feature Al Cisneros on vocals and bass and Chris Hakius on drums.

Their music is similar in structure to Tibetan chanting and is rich in rhythm and melody. Their music and lyrics lift off at the beginning and slowly mutate giving a feeling of evolution inside each song. The vocals have a monotone quality, producing, on some tracks, a noticeable hypnotic effect of the sort that tends to be appealing to the devotees of the many various genres of druggishly-bent, “space” music—but which not all music calling itself “stoner rock” necessarily is able to cause.

On the 31st of January 2008, Hakius left the band. In March 2008 OM recorded a 7” for Sub Pop records. The song “Gebel Barkal” was the first release to feature new drummer Emil Amos.

Their sound excels as a mixture of monolithic ultra heavy compositions with expressionistic poems. Their algid songs consist of long monotonous build-ups (comparable to a long lonely haunting trip through the arctic) and some seldom parts of eruption, disembarrassment and hope. 2songs - 30 minutes - the perfect soundtrack for a picnic in the middle of nowhere. Definitely something for fans of Switchblade, Moss, Indian and that likes. With a guest cello appearance of Emily from Audrey.

Since 2002, General Lee never stopped to look forward their own definition of chaos, melting intensity, blackness and emotion in a shape that belongs to abrasive hardcore music. After some recording try-outs they definitely head out with a mammoth disc in the name of Hannibal Ad Portas. This disc plays with feelings and contrasts by creating a tense climate near to the break. Icy and oppressive atmospheres, heavy and melancholic riffing are mixed ton an abrasive hardcore and a blowing off and cathartic screaming. A music that blurs and destroys the usual plans to be reconstructed in pain...

In a darkening world with blurred possibilities, General Lee take the road of introspection to arrive to a dramatic understanding of the mind's surroundings. Unleashed with a grand dimension of upsetting melodies, Hannibal Ad Portas is evolving from musical damnation to salvation in 6 no-easy-to-listen tracks. One kind of heavy doom.

Exotic and sensuous yet dark and maddening. These are the first impressions I get when hearing Greece's Universe217. Dramatic vocals soar and collapse above a tapestry of wandering rhythms and laid-back drumming. During periods this lends the music an effect of being two separate songs being played over the top of each other.

Opener "In Your Head" is a slow paced and somewhat dreamy song that indicates that the nightmarish landscape of your subconscious has been invaded.
Though the true magic of Universe217 is unleashed on the following track "Inferno" with vocals creeping in from different angles as clean guitars and a driving rock beat hurtle this song onwards into madness.
My favorite song, "66", has an amazing and soothing break in the middle where Tania's vocals become so fragile before shooting up through the ceiling with an imposing verbal majesty!
Tribal beats and a gypsy atmosphere provide the foundation for "I Don't Give a Damn" as Tania's vocals shatter walls with their commanding power.

Obviously and probably purposefully the highlight of Universe217 are the vocal gymnastics of singer Tania. She covers the spectrum from scathing frailty to intense insanity! Universe217's experimental and doomy sound are an epic journey into a formless and turbulent void. Creating distorted art through both visual and aural avenues these Greeks are summoners of a mystifying and magical headtrip that burrows into your skull and corrupts all your visions with the seed of insanity. -nocturnalcult.com

Sea Of Bones is a funeral doom band at heart; one that employs a very different aesthetic and sonic quality than most funeral doom bands, but still part of the style nonetheless. Imagine if one of those frequently lauded post-metal bands like Isis or Pelican played funeral doom; that's the sort of thing that Sea Of Bones does. So while the sound of the music here is perhaps slightly more accessible than the majority of funeral doom, this still has more in common with Tyranny than it does Red Sparowes.

Sea Of Bones plays a sludgy variety of funeral doom that reminds me of cult French artist Monarch. Of course, Sea Of Bones is a lot more kinetic than Monarch; they don't drone nearly as constantly and repetitively as that band, and the music feels less like drowning in a swamp than them. There's more variety here, probably virtue of the post-metal influence, and it is well employed throughout 'The Harvest'. The tracks on this album all feature sections of noisy yet subdued ambiance, crushing doom plodding, and bombastic climaxes of post-metal with about 300% more bass in the mix. To say that this is heavy is an understatement, and to say that this is very musical is quite an overstatement. The constant, ambient rumble of bass is a major focus, as most of the riffing is just composed of two repeated, alternating single notes or chords. It doesn't sound like much, but each is employed carefully and effectively, despite how cyclic everything is. Much of the variety also comes from the drumming, with the slight adjustment of fills and rhythms helping to move the music forward.

'The Harvest' is an album that is much more than the sum of its parts. The individual elements are rather stale; the droning guitar/bass rumble with winding leads, the hoarsely screamed vocals, the tribalistic drumming, etc. All the elements have been done before. But Sea Of Bones employs them in just an interesting and unique enough way to make the whole package seem different. Really, if the tempo of this was 40 BPM higher or the vocals were whispered growls, it would be much less interesting; the band teeters on the edge of conventionality without ever quite slipping in, and any change from the way the album is designed now would cause it to topple instantly. In that regard, it's one of the more carefully and precisely designed albums that I've heard; every note is very well placed and, more importantly, interestingly placed, despite how played out the base elements of the music are.

Most of the doom/drone/ambient scene will want to give this album a listen; it's a good example of how to put a solid spin on the old conventions of these styles and make something new and engaging. Moreover, it's pretty impressive that they've been able to make the post-metal/funeral doom combination something that's interesting to listen to, where Monarch becomes and endurance test and Pelican slips into rock territory too often nowadays. Worth a look due to how good these guys are at composition, and because it's just a good listen. -noktorn.wordpress.com

Earthen is the title of the debut album of Lent0, who already have a collaboration album with Ufomammut.Seven incredible songs create a massive atmosphere mixing ambient with hardcore, post-rock with psychedelia, all under unbelievable concrete riffs. Under a wide range of influences including seminal bands such as Neurosis, Earth, Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor, Lent0 create a personal sound we could define as "heavy ambient".
"Earthen" has been recorded in Roma at Locomotore Studio (Dalek, Zu, Ardecore, Nobukazu Takemura, Mats Gustaffson, Original Silence, Xabier Iriondo, Michael Zerang, Dogon and many more...).
Lento is an instrumental five piece act, 3 guitars, bass and a drumkit and their tone is a blend of heavily down tuned guitars, apocalyptic slow tempos, systematic drones and resonant feedbacks, their live sets alternate from hardcore assaults to intimate collapses of the signals.

In a genre many would claim is over-saturated with sound-a-like bands, there are few who can convey such epic yet destructive beauty as UK quartet Latitudes. Intense, crushing melodies ebb and flow through carefully structured movements as insurmountably destructive as ocean waves, while sharp feedback and commanding bass lines tear into the landscape with rabid yet precise ferocity. Downbeat, dark and enchantingly melancholic, this is a superb debut that is as inspirationally ethereal as it is haunting. In a not too distant future, when images of the last great war to rock this planet are projected on to classroom walls to teach the surviving infants our terrible history, Latitudes could well provide the soundtrack. - Rocksound (8/10)
