Album: Thursday / Envy - Split

Band: Thursday / Envy
Album: Split
Label: Temporary Residence Limited
Year: 2008

01.As He Climbed The Dark Mountain
02.In Silence
03.An Absurd And Unrealistic Dream Of Peace
04.Appeared And Was Gone

05.An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction
06.Isolation Of A Light Source
07.Pure Birth And Loneliness

More than two years after Thursday first put the idea in our heads, Temporary Residence Ltd. is proud to finally bring together two influential bands from two very different places. Recorded in Spring 2008, both bands turn in some of their most inspired work yet. In addition, Thursday invited Anthony Molina of Mercury Rev to remix the dark instrumental "In Silence" into the pitch-black closing track, "Appeared And Was Gone," providing the perfect transition into the massive dynamics of Envy. Beginning with the subtle electronics of the symphonic opener, "An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction," Envy thrashes and burns through a trio of thoughtful face-melters. Also the artowrok was made by acclaimed poster artist, Dan Grzeca.

Album: General Lee - Hannibal Ad Portas

Band: General Lee
Album: Hannibal Ad Portas
Label: Basement Apes Industry
Year: 2008

03.Our Last Struggle Winter
04.Colossal Rains
05.A Dead Issue
06.Hannibal Ad Portas

Since 2002, General Lee never stopped to look forward their own definition of chaos, melting intensity, blackness and emotion in a shape that belongs to abrasive hardcore music. After some recording try-outs they definitely head out with a mammoth disc in the name of Hannibal Ad Portas. This disc plays with feelings and contrasts by creating a tense climate near to the break. Icy and oppressive atmospheres, heavy and melancholic riffing are mixed ton an abrasive hardcore and a blowing off and cathartic screaming. A music that blurs and destroys the usual plans to be reconstructed in pain...

In a darkening world with blurred possibilities, General Lee take the road of introspection to arrive to a dramatic understanding of the mind's surroundings. Unleashed with a grand dimension of upsetting melodies, Hannibal Ad Portas is evolving from musical damnation to salvation in 6 no-easy-to-listen tracks. One kind of heavy doom.

Album: Uzi And Ari - Don't Leave In Such A Hurry

Band: Uzi And Ari
Album: Don't Leave In Such A Hurry
Label: Own Records
Year: 2005

01. The Past The Orchards On The Right
02. Lungs Out
03. Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz
04. The Protagonist
05. Blood And Vibrance
06. Keep Eyes Open
07. It Doesn't Work
08. Perestroika

Rioting quieter than most, Uzi and Ari seems to essentially be the solo project of one Ben Shepard, of Salt Lake City - It Is Freezing Out is his second long-play collection following last year’s Dont Leave In Such A Hurry. These songs are well fleshed-out by an assortment of accomplished musicians, each lending their own nuances to proceedings, but at this album’s core beats the heart of a single man only.

A singer who doesn’t sing, but rather a theatrical magnet, who passionately speaks and yells. A guitarist who plays with a bow, another who sings so high. Cymbals, snares, bass, keys and a DIY light-board attached to a guitar strap. An art-rock collective. A visual display and a musical experience.

During three years, band had frequently toured in support of their highly acclaimed self-titled album and played numerous shows in Croatia and across Europe (Slovenia, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Bosnia and Herzegovina) arousing the interest of many fans with genuine instrumental music that defies easy categorization.

Album: Stellardrive - Omega Point

Band: Stellardrive
Album: Omega Point
Label: Only4Stars Records, Le Sonotone, Dvs Records/Believe
Year: 2008

01. Departure
02. What Everyone Can See Through The Window
03. Magnetic Drum Calculator
04. Islandsix
05. Saggitarius A
06. Turbulences (A Nice Day To See All The Damages Done)
07. Turbulences (Post Damages Reconstruction - Sjukdom Remix)
08. Departure (The End Of All Things Part.1 - Sjukdom Remix)
09. Departure (The End Of All Things Part.2 - Nao Remix)

Stellardrive consists of three guitarists, a bass player and a drummer that also makes use of keyboards, machines and a clarinet. Almost automatically this means we have to deal with an instrumental post-rock band. This is true with this quintet (according to the biography. Strange thing is, the band picture consists of six guys, maybe the sixth guy is involved with the visuals) from France. Several members are known from Aside From A Day and Gantz. These bands have quit, so now their full attention goes out to Stellardrive. In 2005 and 2007 the band already recorded the EPs ‘ERS-1’ and ‘ERS-2’ and except for the track “Resonances” from ‘ERS-1’ ‘Omega Point’ is a compilation of these EPs with the addition of three remixes. Especially the tracks from the latest EP are the most outstanding on ‘Omega Point’. During the years they slightly shifted from melancholic post-rock in the vein of Mogwai and Red Sparowes to the energetic and the hopeful version of the likes of Maserati.

Although they do nothing new, the songs are high quality post-rock tunes with great hooks and melodies. The established names shouldn’t be ashamed if they have written these songs. The remixes included are shortened versions of the tracks “Turbulence” and “Departure” with electronic sounds woven into it, nothing special in contrary to the original songs. Nevertheless, the main part of this release are the regular songs of Stellardrive and these are an outstanding starting point for new things to come.

Album: Burst - Lazarus Bird

Band: Burst
Album: Lazarus Bird
Label: Relapse
Year: 2008

01.I Hold Vertigo
02.I Exterminate I
03.We Are Dust
05.Cripple God
07.(We Watched) The Sliver Rain
08.City Cloaked

Burst is a progressive metal band from Sweden. They were formed in 1993 by Jesper Liveröd, Linus Jägerskog and Patrik Hultin. Guitarists Robert Reinholdz and Jonas Rydberg joined the band a bit later. According to their label, they are considered to be one of Sweden's brightest metal prospects.

The band is known to add progressive elements to their hardcore/metal music making them different from most of the other metalcore bands. Their vocals are a mixture of melodic vocals (Reinholdz) and screaming (Jägerskog) . They are currently signed to Relapse Records.

Burst were formed by a couple of friends for no real intention but to just make fast paced, heavy music. They were initially called Dislars. Their older music was more grindcore and crust punk oriented. They played a few live shows across Sweden. They later started playing a brutal style of hardcore punk. The more they improved their playing skills, the band shifted towards a more progressive style while still sticking to their Hardcore roots. They later decided on the name Burst. The band then began to take their music more seriously and decided to record demos. During this period they toured heavily. They eventually inked a deal with Melon Records. Their first two studio albums were released there. However, the band was not satisfied with the results and began to add more changes to their music. They released a few EPs after this.

In 2003, Burst released Prey On Life through Relapse records. This is the album that not only set the bands style but also gained them more popularity. This was because Relapse was a more well known label, having in its roster bands like Nile and Mastodon, as well as many well known bands in the metal community. The release was generally well received. By touring with Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon and other bands, Burst began to slowly rise in popularity. Before writing their new album, they knew what direction they had to go. Instead of sticking to a formula that worked, they intended to push themselves even further. The result was Origo, which was praised by magazines such as Terrorizer, Metal Hammer and Kerrang and saw the band becoming more popular than ever before.

Burst's new record, "Lazarus Bird", was recorded at Bohussound Studio in Kungalv, Sweden, and produced by Burst and Fredrik Reinedahl. Relapse Records is scheduled to release the new album September 16, 2008 in the United States, September 19, 2008 in Germany, and September 22, 2008 in the rest of Europe.

Album: Canyonsofstatic - The Dissapearance

02. The Disappearance
03. Blinding Cold, Casket Black
04. 1:17
05. Are We Still The Good Guys
06. Shelter
07. Slowly To Sea

In the midst of a desperately cold Wisconsin winter in 2005, canyonsofstatic formed in an unheated practice space. They wore hats and coats to keep warm and gloves with the tips cut off to keep their fingers from freezing during the long hours of rehearsal. By the time the cold became unbearable, it was spring and canyonsofstatic’s sound had already been born from those initial months of shivering together. canyonsofstatic started as an experiment between friends, a dusting off of instruments so to speak. The songs evolved from a collective process and what came out was a complete surprise to the group – epic instrumental music. Ross Severson on guitar and Nathan Gaffney on drums form walls of sound with reverb drenched noise and trailing delays, blanketed with crashing cymbals and driving beats. Chris Biertzer on bass navigates his way through the landscape of sound adding melody to the chaos, and Aggie Severson .. keys delicately keeps the balance and perspective. All this was wrapped into a live performance that adds homemade abstract films as a visual aspect to the music. It is truly an experience of sight and sound that allows the listener to imagine and interpret the music however they choose. canyonsofstatic previously self-released two EPs and has just released their first full-length album “The Disappearance” on Former Airline Records.

Album: The Calm Blue Sea - The Calm Blue Sea

Band: The Calm Blue Sea
Album: The Calm Blue Sea
Label: Self-released
Year: 2008

01. We Happy Few
02. Literal
03. The Rivers That Run Beneath This City
04. Now Those Ashes Are at the Bottom
05. After the Legions
06. This Will Never Happen Again

Instrumental rock has long been the red-headed stepchild of the music industry. Instrumental anything is often relegated to background music, but Explosions in the Sky, The Calm Blue Sea and their local brethren have elevated the visability of the genre and are exploring new boundaries to bring mainstream attention to music that was once an afterthought in the minds of music fans.

Based in Austin, Texas; The Calm Blue Sea came into being early in 2007 when ex-members of other popular Austin acts (Go Nova, Tammany Hall Machine, Dragonfly Jones, Black Noise Revival, Wax Museum Pandemonium, and others) decided they wanted to start a new band, on that would creat bold, epic new post-rock that ranges from "sweet calmness" to "near chaos."

In the summer of 2007, The Calm Blue Sea recorded a four song live demo in their home studio in south Austin. It has since caught the attention of club owners and thanks to the internet, music aficionados all over the world.

The Calm Blue Sea
’s self-titled debut album is only six songs, but clocks in at 46.5 mins. Both of these things are completely standard and expected in the instrumental genre. What’s fresh and unique to The Calm Blue Sea are the bold peaks and valleys of their songs. The piquant crescendos and decrescendos are hallmarks of skilled songwriting and composition. Most striking are the soft, ethereal piano choruses, bookended by driving guitar verses that hold your attention and simultaneously leave you wanting more.

The Calm Blue Sea is being self released by the band and is currently available for purchase digitally from the following locations as well as at their shows and local record shops around Austin.

Album: Hellas Mounds & Empires - Split

Band: Hellas Mounds & Empires
Album: Split
Label: Saw her Ghost Records
Year: 2008

01. Unease From Up North (Empires)
02. Perpetual Downpour (Empires)
03. How Shall Thy Kingdom Stand (Hellas Mounds)

"In an exhilarating display of east-meets-west/north-meets-south Minnesota's Empires and Arizona's Hellas Mounds join together to form one massive unforgetable chunk of majesctic instru-metal. While Empires continues to showcase the barren, frozen wastelands of the midwest. the Hellas Mounds debut delivers one giant slab of dense, arid doom as expansive as the desert that surrounds them."

Empires hails from Minneapolis MN, and consists of 4 members. The band is purely instrumental and has doom metal tendencies. They have 2 demos and an album called Through Trial and Tribulation Comes Triumph, released on Saw Her Ghost Records during the summer of 2007. Brian (bass) is also a member of the black metal band ManeThereN, aka Grudlevitikh.
Andy, Jim and Kevin, are also session members and live performers for ManeThereN.

Hellas Mounds
HELLAS MOUNDS, formed in early 2006, is a sonic flood of sounds, textures, and atmosphere that pulls you under barely letting up for even a moment to gasp for air. Even though they have not been around long they have already made a lasting mark while being compared to Mogwai, Red Sparowes, and Rosetta.
2007 saw the release of ‘The Last Ferry To Cydonia Demo Sessions EP’

Album: Blindead - Autoscopia: Murder in Phazes

Band: Blindead
Album: Autoscopia: Murder in Phazes
Year: 2008
Label: Deadline Records

01. Phaze I: Enlightenment
02. Phaze I: Abyss
03. Phaze II: Symmetry
04. Phaze II: Phenomena
05. Phaze III: Blood Bond
06. Phaze III: A Nice Night for a Walk
07. Phaze IV

Polish heavy music hidden secret, Blindead, return with their second, fully matured full length album "Autoscopia: Murder In Phazes"; an album of grandiose proportions, parallel to "Panopticon" or "The Eye of every Storm".

The intriguing title of the album perfectly corresponds with the music and grasps the overwhelming atmosphere of the album; chaos and lunacy emanating from the very first seconds of "Autoscopia" seem to lure the listener further down the bottomless pit of mental malady, having him twist and turn in claustrophobic thoughts. Yet, as minutes go by the listener fits in, adjusts himself to the immense harshness of "Autopscopia" and discovers sheer beauty flourishing beneath this brutal and seemingly inaccessible music.

With loads of bands operating on the post-metal scene, Blindead is a distinctive creation, a band the music of which excels all the Neurosis and Isis followers. "Autoscopia"” was not created in California, nor was it brought forth in New England. "Autoscopia" is a Central European endeavor with its own identity; hence it can easily compete with the famous Americans. It is post-metal of the 21st century, poignant in its forceful authenticity and at the same time painfully emotional.

When Cult Of Luna released "Eternal Kingdom", one could think that the 2008 post-metal throne has already been conquered, but the Swedes will have to share the laurel wreath with Blindead, as "Autoscopia" is a post-metal album par excellence, one the overlooking of which no music fan can afford – truly a treat for every respectable listener. From the ominous "Phaze I: Enlightenment", through the aural turmoil of the following tracks, to the monumental "Phaze IV", Blindead astonishes with the freshness of ideas and arrangements, the intensity, the heaviness of songs and finally the professionalism of all the musicians.

Album: Japanese Sunday - Taps Taps Lights Out

Band: Japanese Sunday
Album: Taps Taps Lights Out
Year: 2006
Label: Grayscale Records

01. Cold Bright Blue Lights
02. Eight OClock Robot
03. Kagaku
04. The Genius of Anonymity
05. First Shots Fired on a Blue AM
06. Proxy
07. Tigers on Ships
08. Pinocchio, The Bleeder
09. Search + Rescue
10. Next Time Remember to Breathe

This indie rock powerhouse known as Japanese Sunday should be a welcome addition to the San Diego roster of quality bands. Having put together a ten song debut that floats from the eloquence similar to that of EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY to the raucousness of acts like FUGAZI, Japanese Sunday have managed to develop a sound all their own. Songs like “First Shot Fired on a Blue A.M.” and “Tigers on Ships” are easily my favorites but the guitar work on the intro and then throughout “Pinocchio, The Bleeder” almost sounds like classical Latin guitar and is fantastic. The vocals are strong throughout, even though they could be perceived as whiny at times. However, Japanese Sunday’s strength lies in their ability to compose a collection of songs that use a diverse number of instruments and sounds to make catchy and interesting tunes. This is right up there with acts like BOILERMAKER, NO KNIFE, FIRST WAVE HELLO, LOWCLOUDCOVER and GOODBYE BLUE MONDAY. “Taps Taps Lights Out” is a great debut by the band and I look forward to future releases.
