StarFunkSimples is a Hungarian band from Pècs. Its music can be characterized by a blend of styles ranging from rock to metal spiced with improvisational melodies and airy pshychedelia. For a rock band the setup is unusual, having drums, guitar, bass, clarinet and no vocals. Since the members have been friends (and brothers) for ages a special writing chemistry is present which provides the framework for instant, improvised ideas that result in an eclectic musical journey.

Red Giant, the sophomore album by L.A. instrumental rock band Barrows is fittingly massive in thematic scope as it is in sonic heft. A concept album about the life of a star and what happens after it dies, the band depicts the stages of celestial death throughout the album’s five epic tracks. Barrows build upon entrancing, circling riffs and rhythms intercut with explosive peaks and brilliant subtlties.

To capture this sweeping endeavor, the band teamed up with revered engineer Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Tool), hunkering down for several months at Kasai's newly built North Hollywood studio. The resulting 5-track, 40-minute album was mastered by Chris Common (Palms, Pelican) .

Equals is a band from Texas. The music is dramatic, yet joyous and playful. The songs may sound simple at first, but complexity shines through after careful listening. Every song is meticulously thought out and arranged by bassist Alex Guzman, drummer Matt Toman, keyboardist Logan Wexler and guitarists Dylan Storey and Simon McDonald. Every part of each song, from the angular pulsing rhythms to the crisp, eclectic samples, has a purpose. The organic elements interweave with the synthetic elements, providing texture and layers that are fucking hard to pull off live. Click tracks be damned, they fearlessly recreate multi-layered loops and samples, gracefully operating on the bleak notion that one wrong move can end a song in failure. Equals executes flawlessly, with character behind every note.

For Equals' debut full-length album “Tracts”, they joined producer Alex Bhore (This Will Destroy You) in the studio, recording nine songs, an expansion to their 2011 debut self-titled EP. The songs flow together, providing the soundtrack to a journey that feels forthcoming, unrealized until the final track. Unlike the EP, the album was recorded in one place at Cacophony Recorders in Austin and mixed at Elmwood Studios in Dallas, giving it a more cohesive sound. Working with Bhore again, their new offering is larger, more energetic, with a unique sonic palette of strings, glockenspiel, piano, analog synthesizers, various percussion instruments, field recordings and even vocals. "Tracts" has a bounty of subtle music treats that the members painstakingly buried beneath solid foundations. All these elements, and various other influences, from R&B to folk music, make up the band’s sound, but trying to define Equals' music is like trying to define the five band members as one personality.

Wander is a post-rock band from the San Francisco Bay Area that formed in 2013.

Their sound can be compared to the post-rock bands Mono & Godspeed You! Black Emperor but with faster tempos and intricate drumming like the japanese math rock bands Toe & té. In 2013 they released their debut 10” on their D.I.Y label Headless Queen Records.

This is the first release I've posted for 2014 and what a great way to start the new year!

Perhaps the most immediately apparent characteristic of the fifth RUSSIAN CIRCLES album, Memorial is its wide range of emotion. Vacillating from somber-yet-soaring melodies on one track to pummeling metal heft on the next, Memorial sounds like an album with split personalities. Where one song showcases guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz and bassist/keyboardist Brian Cook’s mastery of lush melancholic melody, the next exhibits their most abrasive underground metal leaning sound, with washed-out 16th-note riffs and crushing rhythms. The band’s penchant for endless hooks remains a constant, but Memorial embodies their most dramatic ranges in tone. In search of such a streamlined sound, the trio focused on each individual song having its own emotional and musical characteristics. As such, Memorial almost feels like stages of grief. That notion might be aided by the album’s clever structuring, in which it ends in the same place as it starts, and special guest vocalist Chelsea Wolfe lending her hauntingly somber vocals to the album closing title track.
