The Inquisition: 092.To Destroy A City

1. How did you come up with the name of the band?

It came from a chapter title of a WWII book we were using as inspiration for the first record.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

We’ll get together, crack some beers, throw on a weird movie, and play with different melodies and rhythms, jam them out a bit. We loop a lot of parts, record the sessions, and then comp down the good bits and give it a framework. Then we just refine the tracks over time to tell the story we wanna tell.

3. How did you decide to add vocals to your new album?

It’s actually something we has explored a little during the writing for SUNLESS but ultimately didn’t fit. Vocals worked better with the material this time around. There were some songs that were written with vocals in mind from the start, and others were we added them later in the process where we thought they might add some new dimension to the track. Vocals to us are just another element, another instrument, another layer.

4. What is "Go Mirage" about?

Michael: Andy came up with the idea as a song title. When I heard it, it really intrigued me, and I suggested it for the album title. “Go Mirage” is the idea that you’re telling something/someone, that you know isn’t there, to leave. We all have events in our lives that we wish didn’t happen. Or we look back to a time where our life was perhaps a bit more at peace, but know we can’t have that time back or undo what has been done. It’s only human to be taunted by those mirages… those memories. “Go Mirage” is taking a stand and telling them to leave.
Andrew: Memories are a Mirage. “Go Mirage” is getting stuck in that moment where memory and reality cross, and the inability to discern what is real and what is not. Thematically, it’s kind of a harsh, broken reality vs. dream concept with a dose of nostalgia.

5. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Michael: My influences come from a lot of places—past experiences, the seasons, work, stress, really any emotion. The music I usually listen to at home is ambient and shoegaze. Lately it has been She Past Away, Kyle Bobby Dunn, and Stars Of The Lid.
Jeff: For me it’s books, films, art, winter, the universe, a lot of times it’s nothing in particular. We usually have a film playing as we write, which can influence the direction the writing takes. As far as listening at home, lately I’ve been into Ben Frost, Sinoia Caves, The Abbasi Brothers, and Esmerine.
Andrew: Memories and dreams. Film and art. Music I’ve been into recently would include The Radio Dept., LORN, Black Marble, Teargas and Plateglass. We also curated a Spotify playlist with some of what we were listening to during creation of Go Mirage. You can check that out here: https://open.spotify.com/user/_n5md_/playlist/5p2PvJyUfU8GT7AvdEQE5k

6. Which is the one album you can’t live without?

Michael: Slowdive - Just For A Day
Jeff: The Dead Texan - S/T
Andrew: Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase

7. What’s the first record you’ve ever bought?

Michael: Green Day - Dookie
Jeff: Green Day here, too.
Andrew: AC/DC - Blow Up Your Video. Gotta love that cover.

8. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Slowdive or Boards Of Canada. We’d also love to get a tour together with God Is An Astronaut.

9. Did the Internet and especially the blogs help to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached?

The Internet definitely helped us get there. After we finished up the first record we upped it to bandcamp and emailed a number of blogs concerning its release. From there, and through some word-of-mouth, we made contact with n5MD. I don’t know if we’re surprised by any country in particular that’s into us, but I guess we have a decent presence in Russia and in Taiwan, which is pretty cool.

10. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price, or services like Spotify?

We definitely support Bandcamp. It’s a great platform for letting the artists decide on how to value their music. For the self-titled, we initially used the name-your-price model because we were just getting out there. Then, when n5MD came into the picture, we pressed CDs and vinyl. So there are costs there for those releases and we/n5 can set the price accordingly. It’s a very flexible platform and the money goes to the artist. Spotify is pretty much the opposite. We’re not fans of the ad-driven, freemium type model that makes up the majority of its users. You don’t want people listening to your track, getting in the zone, and then immediately getting blasted by a Home Depot commercial or some shit. It, and similar services like Pandora, are cool from a “radio” standpoint where we’re gaining exposure via similar artists, but there is no compensation. I guess that’s the trade-off? Exposure vs. compensation. At the end of the day we work hard to make a quality product that we believe in. The physical component is an important element to the experience.

11. Where to you see yourselves in 5 years?

Hopefully doing what we’re doing now just with a couple more albums under our belts. It’s exciting to see how the writing and the sound evolves over time. We’ll have a new studio up within the next few months and we’re interested in how the new environment will influence us. Hopefully, we’ll get to play some shows in the spring of 2018.

12. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Artwork has been and always will be important. It’s a visualization of what you’re hearing, and gives the artist an opportunity to color how you experience the album. The focus has shifted a lot as digital delivery has taken over though.

13. What is your favourite album cover?

Michael: Cocteau Twins - Treasure

Jeff: Tame Impala - “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” single, or really anything Leif Podhajsky has done.

Andrew: Ministry - Filth Pig

14. It seems that a lot of people are turning to vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

With a physical release in general, you get more of a sensory experience. You don’t just hear the music. An album is an object you can see and hold in your hand. Some people get more out of that experience, especially when the album is something that has made a large impact on their life. Some people don’t. For those that do, I think a lot of them are finding that vinyl specifically is preferable to CD in some ways. You get a larger format, bigger artwork, and being analog brings a certain life and color to the record. There are way more options now as far as colors and vinyl design, which adds a new element too.

15. What’s the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Finalizing the mixing process of the first album was pretty powerful. Especially as we were finishing up Goodbye, Dear Friend, everything just sort of clicked. We all had a lot of going on in our lives at that point and we needed that. Opening for Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra in Chicago was awesome too. It was a great shot at one of our favorite venues, surrounded by a lot of our favorite people.

"Go Mirage" is the 3rd full-length album from Chicago cinematic-rock trio To Destroy A City. This follow-up to 2014's post-rock paragon "Sunless" has an added immediacy due to the soaring nature of guitarist Michael Marshall's step toward the mic. Yes... There are vocals! Post-rock for the most part, has mainly utilized vocals as a texture or afterthought. Yet, To Destroy A City have adeptly included vocals into their cinematic tapestries with ease, and in the process added another layer of melody, modesty, and a surprising sense of hope to their already affecting guitar-driven compositions. There is an air of instant gratification with "Go Mirage". It seems to push you forward to the next horizon, much as its title might suggest. Idealists might bark that To Destroy A City can't continue to fly the post-rock flag with such a vocalic album. The enlightened will find that the addition of vocals places the band as contemporaries to artists such as Caspian, Mogwai, and Album Leaf which have effectively used vocals as key components in their music.

Final Days Society is the result of 5 guys from 5 different bands in the southern parts of Sweden joining forces to make music that they love, emotional powerful music. After the first rehearsal they all knew right away that the music they made was something worth fighting for, so promises were made. And so Final Days Society's story begins.

The band has been created music together since the fall of 2006. And after various incarnations the core of the band and the idea of creating emotional music with rich dynamics between hopefulness and despair with soft vocals from the heart are still intact. The promises they made were never broken and are still going strong. Over the years the band has done countless shows around Scandinavia/Europe and have been on tours where they shared stages with acts like Junius and God is an astronaut.

As the years passed by, comes experience and growth. 2015 mark the 9th year of the bands existence and the release of Final Days Society’s third album Icebreaker. Because Final Days Society has always been a group of people with roots in the independent music scene with variety of styles such as punk/pop, hardcore and metal and with a strong ”do it yourself” mentalities they have this time recorded and produced Icebreaker all by themselves. The result is a very personal post-rock infused with the influences from their pass, a playground and the orchestra of the hearts of a group of musicians who call themselves Final Days Society.

The Inquisition: 054.Brother/Ghost

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

W.S. Dowdy: We just liked the way the words sounded together. It was simple and distinctive.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Colby Falkner James: We don’t really have a formula or standard procedure of how we write things. Sometimes Sterling or I will come in with a whole song written, and then we’ll adapt that to the rest of the band. Other times we’ll only have one riff, so we’ll jam on that for a while and see what comes out of it. One thing that is standard for us is that we’re very slow when it comes to the writing process. We usually have lots of unfinished ideas floating in the ether that we’ll come back to later on. We also very frequently just abandon a completed song if it doesn’t stick. We seriously wrote maybe 20-ish songs before we decided on the 7 that would become Buried.
WSD: Generally someone just has a riff and a vibe and we go from there. Sometimes we jam but it seems that jamming just makes jam.
3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?
WSD: Neil Young, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Tears for Fears, Moby, Elvis’ gospel stuff, Earth, Scout Niblett, Jason Molina, The Cure I listen to a lot of electronic and pop music. Burial, Jamie XX, Caribou, Darkside, Kate Bush, Moby, The New Alabama Shakes is really great. I love the soundtrack to Only Lovers Left Alive.
John Olds: My personal influences as far as drums are concerned are... Milemarker, Planes Mistaken for Stars, anything Ginger Baker has done, Windhand, anything Justin Frazier has recorded (Dolcim, Altar of Complaints) Abe Cunningham (Deftones), the guy from Alpinist, Michele (La Quite, Raein) James Lehner (Tristeza), Coady Willis (Murder City Devils, Big Business) and Billy Cobham. At home and work I've been listening to... Jane Doe by Converge, Across Tundras, Phoenix Bodies, the Beatles, the first Foo Fighters record, Nirvana, Hank Williams, Dorthia Cotrell’s solo album, Mulatu Aztatke, and the It Follows soundtrack.
CFJ: I never know how to answer this question, because I could go on forever with this stuff. As you can see from the other answers, we listen to pretty much everything. I know that’s a total copout, but it’s the truth. We love everything from classic country to stoner rock to black metal to screamo to electronica to dance music to hip hop and on and on and on. I think on this album, the more heavy music and country/Americana influences are shining through, but we try to incorporate a lot of different styles in our songs.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

CFJ: This is an impossible question for me. I’m not even going to attempt to answer it.
WSD: Hmm...if i had to choose one... It would probably be Mount Eerie from The Microphones. It doesn't matter how many years I have known it for, it is always new and surprising when I hear it.
JO: Seeing Means More Than Safety by Jerome’s Dream

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

CFJ: Man. A lot of radio butt-rock when I was in junior high (middle school). The first record that I bought that actually meant something to me was Full Collapse by Thursday, probably. I was 14 when it came out, and it let me down a lot of different roads to most of the music I listen to today.
WSD: Savage Garden lol
JO: The Raw and the Cooked by Fine Young Cannibals

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

CFJ: Chelsea Wolfe or Wovenhand
WSD: Deradoorian, Youth Lagoon, Perfume Genius
JO: Across Tundras from Nashville

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

CFJ: Oh for sure. When our first record came out, we sent it to as many blogs as we could to try and gain some traction. We haven’t toured an awful lot, but we’ve managed to grow the fanbase we had pretty much entirely through the Internet and word of mouth. We had a fan from South Africa email us recently to let us know how much he loved our music. That was pretty amazing.
WSD: For sure. I'm stoked and surprised when anyone likes it.
8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?
CFJ: Both I guess? We all use Bandcamp, iTunes, and some sort of streaming service (Sterling and I use Beats Music. John uses Spotify). I know a lot of musicians are really against Spotify and similar services, but that’s just the way the world is turning. It may not be ideal, but you have to adapt, I guess.
JO: I’m not sure if I’d say I support it, but it’s the way it is these days. One downside of the "pay what you want" thing is that it seems to devalue people's work. Musicians are so desperate to get their material out that they're willing to spend a lot of time and money on recording and then just give it away for a dollar...I'm not sure if this helps promote your band or what. I can't say that I don't use bandcamp or Spotify or sites like those... but if I find something that I like, I generally wait until that band comes into town or order their record. I try not to make a habit of just constantly streaming something I like.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

CFJ: Hopefully still doing this band! We’re hoping to make it to as many places as we can between now and then. Europe and Japan are definitely on our “have to do” list at this point.
JO: Cruising the USA on the motorcycle, drinking Cuba Libres in the pool, probably still delivering flowers for a living. I really want to start a podcast and meet Marc Maron...I don't see that happening.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

CFJ: I think so. Personally, I can’t stand it when a song is playing on my phone or my computer and I can’t correlate the music to some kind of visual representation.
WSD: Absolutely. A lot of the time an album cover decides whether I press play or not.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

CFJ: Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky

WSD: Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

CFJ: I honestly don’t know! Vinyl just looks and sounds better, in my opinion. A bunch of records together definitely look better than a bunch of CD’s and digging through vinyl at the record store just feels better. I sold all my CDs years ago, and I only buy them when there is no other option. For me it goes vinyl > digital > CD.
WSD: I love vinyl because I like it when packaging is beautiful, and with vinyl there is a lot more to work with. I love digital media because I am always listening to something and vinyl isn’t so good at being portable.
JO: I love vinyl. Have always been around it because my dad never got rid of his LPs and that spurred me on to start my own collection. To me, its just the most fun/rewarding way to listen to music.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

CFJ: Sterling is going to hate me for putting this story on the Internet, but I have to do it! We were in Lafayette, Louisiana on the last night of our first tour. Sterling was really bummed about having to go home and not be on the road anymore, and his guitar would just not cooperate with him during the first song. We were tearing into the climax of the song, and from the corner of my eye I see him flailing away in what I thought was just the song taking hold of him. What he was actually doing was ripping the strings out from the body of his guitar like a madman. Before I knew he was actually smashing the damn thing on the stage; shattering it into a hundred pieces. All I could do was just stare at him with my mouth agape. Sterling immediately got of the mic and proclaimed, “THIS GUITAR WON’T STAY IN TUNE!” He walked away and got out his backup and started tuning it. Some drunk redneck picked up the neck and started swinging it around like a club. I think we lost a few members of the audience. It was the most “rock-n-roll” thing I’ve ever been a part of.
WSD: Probably the bad ones. As much as that sucks. If not those than being in the studio. I really feel at home in the studio. I feel like anything could happen but not like in a live scary way. Your amp blows up on a stage, and it’s embarrassing, and you feel like you're gonna die. Your amp blows up while you are recording, and you have this rare and delicious texture that only could come from your amp breaking. You can hear that in the last seconds of "Harpies" Colby’s amp was burning up and we were so happy.
JO: Not with Brother/Ghost because i just joined this band a year ago. But Colby and me's old band, MANS. did a west coast tour with COUGAR DEN about 7 years ago and the mini-bus started having major issues in Tijuana, Mexico. That sucked. We drove all the way up the coast at like 35 mph cuz we couldn't get the thing outta 3rd gear. Needless to say we missed a lot of shows.

Brother/Ghost are going to release their amazing first full length album on June 15, 2015 on Shelsmusic and i.corrupt.records.

Adolf Plays The Jazz have nothing to do whatsoever with politics and fascism especially.

In essence, the band is formed in 2002, even though the first song under the name Adolf Plays The Jazz created in 1998 (it's "Frank Zappa needs haircut", which was later included in the Muzzle the birds EP).  Adolf Plays The Jazz have never had a specific line-up. Anyone who has been involved in their releases and activities in any way is considered a member of the band. Of course it's not about a collective of any sort. The terms post-rock and shoegaze might be the most appropriate to describe their music, but Adolf Plays The Jazz are influenced by everything they listen to, read or see...

The OO-Ray is the alias of Ted Laderas, an improvisatory and experimental cellist from Portland, OR. A systems biologist by day, he extends his experimental attitude to exploring the outer possibilities of the cello, often distorting, looping, or pitchshifting his instrument beyond recognizability into waves of reverberation and extended drones. Inspired by the gauzy textures of My Bloody Valentine, he call his style “shoegazer cello” or “chamber drone”. His music explores the realms of electroacoustic, shoegazer, and ambient.

This Social Coil was created in spring 2011, founded in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. It´s hard to describe the music direction exactly. It´s something between post-rock, indie and alternative, instrumentals and vocals. The influences are coming from post-rock, post-punk and typical alternative sounds. Lyrics often treat typical philosophical thoughts of the life.
