Postcode guitarist Mikie Daugherty kicked off 2014 with the release of an EP in his Nanaki guise.  Released once again by Small Bear Records, the five-track Afterlight EP contains music that was recorded in the autumn of 2013 whilst Postcode was regrouping with a new drummer, with a cover painted by brilliant Leeds-based artist Grace Turner.

Back in the early-to-mid part of the last decade Nanaki was an instrumental post-rock type band based on the Isle of Man, at a time that such a thing was not really deemed socially acceptable in the local scene.  Known for their intense performances and excessive volume, Nanaki only released one album in their lifetime, the exceedingly limited-edition Fashion Is The Enemy Of All Art, back in The Summer Of Rock, 2003.  That record predated the existence of Nanaki as a full band, having been written and recorded by Mikie and, on some songs, bassist Emma Ryan before the addition of extra personnel to the line-up.

This new EP was recorded in a similar manner, with all instrumentation being handled by Mikie, with no intention to return to live performance with other musicians.  Perhaps less obviously post-rock than the live band had been, Afterlight also sees Nanaki explore new areas, including experimentation with tempo changes and, in Saint Alessa, a 'concept' piece of sorts (though that is irrelevant to the listener, it was simply a new method of writing).

Haeligewielle is the debut solo record of Oliver Barrett of Bleeding Heart Narrative. It is a swirling cataract of a record, a deluge of beautiful noise and crushing melody, which ebbs and flows beneath the surface. Utilizing bowed strings, bent electronics, found percussion and occasional vocals, the record unfolds over seven tracks and fifty minutes, from the portentous drone of the opening ‘After Francis Danby’ and shimmering ‘Silt’ through the work-song-like ‘Concrete’ and cascading rhythm of ‘Winchester Croydon Winchester’. Haeligewielle tells a forgotten story, buried underneath the stones and water.

Amanita started as the solo project of Jim Tobakos in 2010 combining elements of progressive metal, metalcore, post-hardcore, and post-rock. Jim wrote, recorded, and released his debut self-titled EP in August 2012. Now Amanita has expanded its line-up to feature Aaron Stinson and Jake Reske for a total of three guitarists, Zech Lakatos on bass, and Vince D'Agostino on drums. Currently in writing mode, a new full-length is on the horizon for 2014.

These two tracks were originally intended to be released on a split EP long ago, but Amanita's plans fell through. Intended as a teaser for their full-length, these two songs really paint a picture of what Amanita has become as a full band.

Equals is a band from Texas. The music is dramatic, yet joyous and playful. The songs may sound simple at first, but complexity shines through after careful listening. Every song is meticulously thought out and arranged by bassist Alex Guzman, drummer Matt Toman, keyboardist Logan Wexler and guitarists Dylan Storey and Simon McDonald. Every part of each song, from the angular pulsing rhythms to the crisp, eclectic samples, has a purpose. The organic elements interweave with the synthetic elements, providing texture and layers that are fucking hard to pull off live. Click tracks be damned, they fearlessly recreate multi-layered loops and samples, gracefully operating on the bleak notion that one wrong move can end a song in failure. Equals executes flawlessly, with character behind every note.

For Equals' debut full-length album “Tracts”, they joined producer Alex Bhore (This Will Destroy You) in the studio, recording nine songs, an expansion to their 2011 debut self-titled EP. The songs flow together, providing the soundtrack to a journey that feels forthcoming, unrealized until the final track. Unlike the EP, the album was recorded in one place at Cacophony Recorders in Austin and mixed at Elmwood Studios in Dallas, giving it a more cohesive sound. Working with Bhore again, their new offering is larger, more energetic, with a unique sonic palette of strings, glockenspiel, piano, analog synthesizers, various percussion instruments, field recordings and even vocals. "Tracts" has a bounty of subtle music treats that the members painstakingly buried beneath solid foundations. All these elements, and various other influences, from R&B to folk music, make up the band’s sound, but trying to define Equals' music is like trying to define the five band members as one personality.

The Inquisition: 002.Képzelt Város

01. How did you came up with the name of the band?

The name Képzelt Város (‘Imagined City’) was inspired by the same titled novel of Sándor Weöres, one of the best known contemporary Hungarian poets. The idea came from the fact that the band was formed by four architects. This particular name seemed to be some sort of an almost perfect solution to try to describe what architects can create throughout music.

02. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

No particular process or method. Sometimes one of us comes up with an idea, a riff or an almost complete song, sometimes we just jam around until we manage to get something done.

03. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

That would be a pretty long list of great bands and musicians… A Perfect Circle, 16 Horsepower, Logh, Cult of Luna, Engine Down, Red Sparrowes, Mono would certainly be part of the list… with many others, of course.

04. What’s the first record you've ever bought?

I can’t remember exactly. It was probably an Alice in Chains tape or something similar. It sure was a grunge record, though.

05. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

We enjoy playing live a lot, no matter who else we have to share the stage with.

06(a). Did the internet and especially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world?

They absolutely did. We are always amazed to see dedicated people all around the globe. The fact that we managed to reach potential listeners overseas shows that blogs have a major role in spreading alternative music around the world. We are really grateful for that job.

06(b). Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Well, at the beginning everything seemed to be a surprise. Recently, we have been lucky enough to hear about fans from plenty of countries here and there. For instance, Mexico or Indonesia was a big and very nice surprise in this regard. In general, we are glad to hear about people who love what we do one way or another, no matter where they are from.

07. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

We have some nice experiences concerning the ‘Pay what you want’ option, therefore we totally support the idea.

08. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

It is really hard to tell... We just want to keep up playing music as long as we enjoy doing so. Besides, a band always needs an audience, which means that we will keep on until people are interested in listening to what we do.

09. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Despite the fact that nowadays only a few fans get hold of a copy of the CD, we do think that artwork remained an essential part of creating a full-length album. A proper graphic design always adds some values to the record, it helps you understand the concept of the songs, and in certain cases it shows you in advance what the music will probably sound like. Even though some say that it is only the music that matters, great artworks still function as pure pieces of art too. Not to mention that artworks might be important when it comes to discover new bands. It has probably happened to you as well that you bumped into something amazing just because you loved the cover at first sight…

10. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

It is part of the trend of getting back to old-school, exciting technologies. Besides, vinyl is kind of a sacred object as well, it makes music even more ‘tangible’, not to mention that artworks often look better in bigger size. Vinyl represents a higher quality and a longer life expectancy, no wonder that most people are totally into it (including us).

11. What's the funniest story or moment as a band?

It would be kind of hard to highlight one single story. Let’s say we really enjoy each other’s company and every moment we spent together on stage is a funny one.

With a 5 song demo and self-released split 7" with They Come in Waves in their catalogue, http://gr8rev.bandcamp.com/ has recorded their most progressive and emotionally complicated release with "To the Ends of the Earth", 4 songs lyrically centered on their drummer's struggle to raise his deaf, autistic son. "So you like your songs long and your melodies big and beautiful? Well let me introduce you to a brand new Newcastle Upon Tyne based instrumental post-rock band Winter Isle, made up of ex-members of Lavotchkin, Kansasburns and Black Wolves. Although taking influences from bands such as Mogwai, Cult of Luna, and Red Sparowes, Winter Isle have crafted their own take on the post-rock genre with their own brand of instrumental bigger riffs, sound scape's, folk influenced guitars tided with an under-current of electronic ambience. Debuting their first live appearance in August 2013 at a secret warehouse event curated by Matterhorn UK. Winter Isle presented both an individual and impressive live incarnation, leaving many eagerly anticipating a debut release. Several months on, “Eilean” (pronounced "el-lan", a gaelic word for island); the impressively self recorded and produced debut Winter Isle record has been completed and is currently in the process of being self released by the band. Opting to release via limited cassette with beautifully manufactured wooden cases along with download codes, Winter Isle will be playing a series of gigs around the UK later this year." - Press Release

The Inquisition: 001.Colaris

"The Inquisition" is a new section on the blog, the idea of which, was conceived with the help of Colaris. It will consist of the same 11 questions (plus 1-2 more in some cases) for all bands that will take part in this. Enjoy!

01. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Just a random evening in our favorite pub drinking some beers together. After a while we came up with the idea to have a name, that will have 2 sides in it. Like good & evil, cold & hot or yin & yang. Because that`s the essence of everything in life. So we took COLARIS. It`s just a fantasy word that describes both in it, for us.

02. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

For our previous records we used to jam a lot. Most of the time I brought some basic ideas of guitar riffs, and then we worked it out together. The current song ideas for the upcoming record, I mostly write at home. Then we record them in our rehearselroom and listen to them back and forth. Maybe that’s related to our newer stuff. The song structures are way more complex. Less soundscapes and  no typical loud/quiet dynamics where you can jam with.

03. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

I find a lot of creativity and influences for  my songwriting besides of music. That starts with: Mankinds nowadays way of living and there behaviors, traveling, nature, movies and of course all the good and bad times in life.
When it comes to music: I listen to almost every genre of music meanwhile. It just depends on my mood.
Currently I listen to a lot of 90`s grunge bands like Alice in chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, or 70`s Psychedelic Rock. I`m totally psyched on “lonerism” and "Innerspeaker" from Tame Impala (Australia). Hands down, one of the best bands I`ve discovered over the last years.

04. What’s the first record you've ever bought ?

Hard question! On CD it must be “Master of Puppets” from Metallica. We used to copy and trade Tapes as much as we can, back in the days. I owned just a cople of original LP`s and CD`s when i was younger.

05. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with ?

Maybe a Scandinavian tour with Sólstafir. Such a lovely band and nice dudes. Glad they finally get the response they deserve, all over the world. "Köld" will always be one of my favorite records of all time.

06. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Sure, it helps us a lot spreading our music around the globe. We receive messages from Indonesia, America, Australia, and whole Europe. And we are really grateful for that, because that’s why we make music. And it keep pushing us forward.

07. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

I love bandcamp. Most of the bands I listen to, put their whole albums up. And I like the “name your price” option, because I will buy the physical copy anyway, if i like it. So I got the opportunity to listen to it first. And i don`t need to buy it on the release date, or rip it from the internet or youtube.

08. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Hopefully still writing music and playing concerts together. If not,  being involved in new bands and projects. There is no certain kind of achievement or goals, that i am looking for. I`ll just  keep pushing me forward in my songwriting and band work. "Always stay gold" !!! :)

09. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

For me, album artworks will always be important. The visual side of an record takes me to the right place to listen to it. For example, when I was younger I used to draw all my favorite covers on everything I could find.

10. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

To be honest, in the last couple of years, music & collecting lost a lot of his magic. People ripping cd`s or download it from the internet, or trade there whole hard drives to exchange their music. I don`t want to know how much good bands and albums end up unheard in the depths of everyone’s computer, while labels and bands from everywhere around the world struggling to get there music released.
I can only speak for myself, that I love collecting music and especially vinyl. It has got some certain kind of feeling, having a big gatefold artwork and a heavy 180gramm LP in your hands, putting the needle on and listen to it carefully. No song skipping or mp3 folders to seek through. Don`t get me wrong: I have a lot of MP3`s as well. And I appreciate to have them all with me on my MP3 player, everywhere i go. I would say: I`ve found a good balance that worked out for me between vinyl and MP3.

11. What's the funniest story or moment as a band?

I could write down a whole book. “The never ending story” part 4 till 666.
There are so many unforgetable funny moments. That’s one part of being musician and playing music in a touring band, that I will always love and appreciate. Hard to name one special. I should go for the book, before i get old and start to forget them all.

Colaris will tour in Europe on March. If they play in a place near you, be sure to check them out!

Pollux & Castor is a post-rock, instrumental band from São Paulo, Brasil.

In Greek and Roman mythology, Pollux (or Polydeuces) & Castor were twin brothers, together known as the Dioskouri.Their mother was Leda, but Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, and Pollux the divine son of Zeus, who seduced Leda in the guise of a swan. Though accounts of their birth are varied, they are sometimes said to have been born from an egg, along with their twin sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.
