Expressionistic, sophisticated, evolved, overflowing, pitch-black. Just a few words, a desperate attempt to properly approach ANIMALE(S), the fifth full-length record of the French combo CELESTE from Lyon. While their former albums PESSIMISTE(S) (2006), NIHILISTE(S) (2008), MISANTHROPE(S) (2009) and MORTE(S) NEE(S) (2010) have all been finished in a few months, it took them all the last three years to craft this concept album. Unsurprisingly, the result of this long process is an opus which is so loaded and dense that it can bearly withstand its inner pressure.

The concept behind ANIMALE(S) is the bleak story of a boy and a girl, a kind of love story with a tragic ending. A story about how tough youth can be if parents discard their responsibilities. For once in metal-oriented music, a closer look at artwork and lyrics gives a new dimension to a record and is indispensible for a comprehensive and complete experience of this album.

Musically, ANIMALE(S) sees CELESTE developing their metal and hardcore oriented sound in different directions. Their music was always characterised by the interaction of monumental melodies, dark riffs, violent drums and expressive lyrics, but on the new album all these ingrediences are more expressed. The last three years' time has carved out the contrasts in Celeste's music like a stream carves out a rugged canyon. The melodies are more melodic, but also more sparse. Many parts are much darker and more noisy than the past albums. The lyrics are as savage as they can be without being vulgar. At the same time, ANIMALE(S) features exceptional collaborations with artists such as the experimental musician Ben Chatwin from TALVHORROS -- also on Denovali Records - and the composers and sound designers Sabrina Duval and Jean Charles Bastion.

CELESTE truly managed to finish this album at the right moment, before the amount of concept, composition and artistic skill would have been too much for a single album. Exactly for this reason, ANIMALE(S) is a unique piece of art, a coherent album which does not allow for anything to be added without destroying it. Simply put, it is just perfect.

Album: Downfall of Gaia - Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes

Band: Downfall of Gaia
Album: Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes
Label: Metal Blade
Year: 2012

Tracklist
01. [Vulnus]
02. Drowning By Wing Beats
03. In The Rivers Bleak
04. I Fade Away
05. Beneath The Crown Of Cranes
06. Giving Their Heir To The Masses
07. [Asphyxia]
Download

Downfall of Gaia's sophomore effort features the band's now signature dark atmosphere while effortlessly conveying a sense of hopelessness without quite reaching the desolation that has made Neurosis a household name. This time around though, the German outfit sacrifices a bit of density for a more sustained and thorough album. Reaching almost an hour, Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes showcases a bit more of a melodic side, like with the beginning of track “I Fade Away”. These almost harmonious moments serve as an incredibly well executed contrast to the dark depths of the remainder of the record while also offering some reprieve before the onslaught progresses yet again.

The most impressive thing present in the record is the band's reluctance to rush their sound. Too many times has a band found a unique riff or melody only to accelerate headfirst into it, instead of letting yourself ease into it naturally. One of the defining moments in the record is towards the end, during the build up in the beginning of the track “Giving Their Heir to the Masses”. Rather than speed into the crescendo of the climax, the band plays a trick on you and actually slows the pace down to an almost unbearable crawl. As the listener, you can feel the summit of the mountain you've been climbing throughout the album, but it's just out of your grasp. Finally, after what seems like thousands of aeons, the height of your aural enterprise is reached, and made all the sweeter because of the tumultuous journey you experienced to get there. This is entirely indicative of the exploration required to penetrate the shell of this monstrosity.

Sophomore releases are almost always defined as a maturing point in a young band's career, and Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes is an incredible example of growth and advancement. The album displays the ensemble becoming more confident in their sound, which only contributes to the overall experience. With the amalgamation of all these elements, and the execution of a band beyond its years, Downfall of Gaia make a huge statement with what could be one of the finest post metal records in recent memory.

((NAVTILVS°)), not influenced by a specific style of music, but by our nightmares; the cataclysmic prospects of the downfall of this cursed world experienced daily.

This is a band working differently. First there is a lyrical concept in which they put their musical ideas. Somewhere in between heavy, dark post-hardcore, dissonant instrumental eruptions, ambient soundscapes. Apart from the inner circle of the band, which manifests itself in a five piece, they work with artists/musicians of all genres that are willing to put pieces of themselves into the creative process.
They shared the stage with: Wolves In The Throne Room, Celeste, Omega Massif, The Arson Project, Ritual, Count Raven, Long Distance Calling.

As We Draw •• Nearly one year after their first album "Lines Breaking Circles" which propel them into the rank of the biggest european outsiders of their style, the young princes of french post-metal are back to punish everybody once again with these two tracks, more muscular and tighter than never before. Five-stars songwriting, outrageous emotional power and contagious anxiety, this is caviar filled with cyanide.
For fans of : Breach, Ken Mode, Old Man Gloom

EUGLENA •• They are coming from the red nation but could have come from the pink city; the hardcore from russians Euglena is as dissonant as buzzing, not so far from the know-how of toulousians I Pilot Daemon & Plebeian Grandstand. These three tracks are a good session of revigorating apnea, slower and dirtier continuation of their previous EP "An Anxious Surface".
For fans of : Buried Inside, Plebeian Grandstand, Botch

HEXIS •• A Danish butchery : hardcore, black metal, sludge and blast beats thrown in the most epic and brutal way. If their first eponymous EP has already teared a strip off some people, "Crux" and "Nex" are following the going-over by stepping up their urgency and helped by a nauseous as-fuck sound.

Ever since their inception in the late nineties, Colorado’s (sometimes controversial) Cobalt have slowly, and slyly, made a reputation within the underground black metal scene, more or less amongst the “war metal” sphere of the scene…

Their debut album (which followed their awesome “Hammerfight” EP), aptly titled “War Metal” (released on Displeased Records) showed Cobalt’s creative prowess within the genre by offering a shape-shifting dose of war metal brutality and black metal rawness that made them one of the more unique and underrated acts within the scene.

With the band’s surging new epic, “Eater of Birds”, Cobalt are pretty much destined to set a new standard as Cobalt have taken an immense leap forward, tenfold, from their debut. But that’s just only scratching the surface…

Recorded at Flatline Audio and produced by Dave Otero (Cephalic Carnage) “Eater of Birds” not only embraces the band’s vicious take on chaotic brutal avant-garde black/war metal and blackthrash, but take things to a new artistic level in every possible manner. By incorporating the epic crushing monolithicism of Neurosis and Swans, and taking blackened war metal to new unconventional brutally warped levels, amongst ritualistic shaman-like rhythms and pulsations, through its 70-plus minute pillage, “Eater of Birds” is an unforgettable audial scourge through vast bizarre landscapes and ocean-like terrain.

And speaking of Swans, “Eater of Birds” features a guest appearance by none other than Jarboe on the tracks “Invincible Sun” and a moving appearance on “Androids, Automatons, And Nihilists”, her first official foray into extreme metal.

On March 17th 2009, Cobalt released their magnum opus, “Gin”.
