Album: Downfall of Gaia - Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes

Band: Downfall of Gaia
Album: Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes
Label: Metal Blade
Year: 2012

01. [Vulnus]
02. Drowning By Wing Beats
03. In The Rivers Bleak
04. I Fade Away
05. Beneath The Crown Of Cranes
06. Giving Their Heir To The Masses
07. [Asphyxia]

Downfall of Gaia's sophomore effort features the band's now signature dark atmosphere while effortlessly conveying a sense of hopelessness without quite reaching the desolation that has made Neurosis a household name. This time around though, the German outfit sacrifices a bit of density for a more sustained and thorough album. Reaching almost an hour, Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes showcases a bit more of a melodic side, like with the beginning of track “I Fade Away”. These almost harmonious moments serve as an incredibly well executed contrast to the dark depths of the remainder of the record while also offering some reprieve before the onslaught progresses yet again.

The most impressive thing present in the record is the band's reluctance to rush their sound. Too many times has a band found a unique riff or melody only to accelerate headfirst into it, instead of letting yourself ease into it naturally. One of the defining moments in the record is towards the end, during the build up in the beginning of the track “Giving Their Heir to the Masses”. Rather than speed into the crescendo of the climax, the band plays a trick on you and actually slows the pace down to an almost unbearable crawl. As the listener, you can feel the summit of the mountain you've been climbing throughout the album, but it's just out of your grasp. Finally, after what seems like thousands of aeons, the height of your aural enterprise is reached, and made all the sweeter because of the tumultuous journey you experienced to get there. This is entirely indicative of the exploration required to penetrate the shell of this monstrosity.

Sophomore releases are almost always defined as a maturing point in a young band's career, and Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes is an incredible example of growth and advancement. The album displays the ensemble becoming more confident in their sound, which only contributes to the overall experience. With the amalgamation of all these elements, and the execution of a band beyond its years, Downfall of Gaia make a huge statement with what could be one of the finest post metal records in recent memory.

Fourteen Twentysix is the cryptic alias of Dutch’ atmospheric rockband, founded in Eindhoven in 2006.

Fourteen Twentysix delicately layes experimental alt/post rock, brooding electronics and fragile singer/songwriter, into melancholic, filmic songs. This is not music for the masses but music that demands listeners to take their time, allowing them to discover something new and different with each rotation. Started in 2006 as a solo project by ex-drummer Chris van der Linden, the project quickly grew into an exceptionally hardworking group that never fails to deliver on stage. The band has shared the stage with bands such as Turin Brakes (UK), Antimatter and Lis Er Stille.

The band, a self proclaimed group of “DIY professionals”, led bynChris van der Linden, is known to take its reputation quite seriously. Resigning from the international band contest Emergenza after winning its first round with a record total audience votes, the band acquired both media attention as well as applause from fellow artists. Openly questioning the moral values of such ‘shootout’ band contests, Chris commented “We aim to be commercial, not sellouts”.

Fourteen Twentysix are an advocate of modern, fast rising phenomena such as social media and free music distribution, has generated over 55.000 free music downloads, utilizing the power of the internet through websites such as Bandcamp, Last.

Album: Locrian/Mamiffer – Bless Them That Curse You

02. Bless Them That Curse You

06. Metis/Amaranthine/The Emperor

Chicago, Illinois LOCRIAN have been known to create prolific and genre defying and mesmerizing works within the realm of experimental music that they are now seen as one of the most in-demand bands within the scene. By creating waves of epic ambient noise mixed with elements of such genres as black metal and soundscape drone, LOCRIAN have developed a body of work that has only been progressing more and more since their inception.

MAMIFFER was initially founded by artist Faith Coloccia after the disbanding of her experimental project Everlovely Lightningheart, With MAMIFFER, Faith began to focus more on songwriting through the paino, fusing neo-classical elements and then incorporating ambient electronic hums and reductionist metal dirge. With MAMIFFER, Faith had collaborated with a myriad of musicians but found a steadiness with her main MAMIFFER co-conspirators Travis Rommeriem and her partner Aaron Turner (of ISIS/Hydra Head Records).

With “Bless Them That Curse You” (recorded at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and mixed by Randall Dunn in Seattle), LOCRIAN and MAMIFFER have fused their unique styles together to create something of wonder and awe, an elegant and beautiful marriage of the many layers of sound present within the vast sound canvas both bands have laid forth to bring such a collaboration to fruition. A collaboration that had even exceeded and gone much further than what each band envisioned and expected when the mere thought of collaborating arose; a musical collaboration from two forward-thinking bands that was destined to happen.

Album: Nadja - Dagdrøm

Band: Nadja
Album: Dagdrøm
Label: Broken Spine
Year: 2012

01. One Sense Alone
02. Falling Out Of Your Head
03. Dagdrøm
04. Space Time & Absence

Nadja is a duo of Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff alternately based in Toronto & Berlin. The duo makes music that encompasses experimental/drone, ambient, shoegazer, & doom metal.

Dagdrøm contains four tracks that average 11 minutes each, and though they're presented as discrete pieces, each is similar in mood and execution, and each plays off the one before it as a variation on the same foreboding theme. "Falling Out of Your Head" effectively chops the riff of "One Sense Alone" in half and doubles the tension, leading a Spiderland-stark lurch to an accelerated, increasingly punishing climax; the title track immediately resumes the in-the-red onslaught, but gradually winds down, reducing its once-imposing refrain to expose the tranquil melody underpinning it. It's followed by the closing "Space Time & Absence", a song that likewise showcases Nadja's sonic extremities, but on an evermore epic scale: McNeilly's (the Jesus Lizard) galloping, tribal beat propels the song into a gargantuan groove, before yielding to a hushed, drawn-out comedown that keeps threatening to erupt once again, like a horror-movie villain that just won't stay dead. And therein lies the key to Dagdrøm's daunting mystique: You're never really sure if what you're hearing is the calm before the storm or the storm before the calm.

HANDLINGNOISE was founded in Helsinki, Finland as an ambient/noise –project in 2007. It was started for a one-off performance at a club for experimental music. Shortly after the concert they were joined by a drummer, which opened up a load of new possibilities. Due to their different musical backgrounds and influences that range from minimal electronic music to metal their own style became very multifaceted.

They wanted to develop a distinctive sound also from the production point of view, so they started recording material on their own in 2008. In the beginning they did this at training spaces and summer cottages using their own and some borrowed equipment. As the project evolved and they realized that these recordings were growing into an album, they also went to record in a studio. HANDLINGNOISE finished work on their debut album in the spring of 2012 and it was mastered by Harris Newman at Greymarket Mastering, Montreal, Canada.

Ghost - A Tale Of Life In VI Parts

Band: Ghost
Album: A Tale Of Life In VI Parts
Label: Self Released
Year: 2012

01. A Tale Of Life Part 1
02. A Tale Of Life Part 2
03. A Tale Of Life Part 3
04. A Tale Of Life Part 4
05. A Tale Of Life Part 5
06. A Tale Of Life Part 6

They say the best music is created in times of hardship. Hardship can be many different things in many different ways but everyone experiences hardship in one way or another over the course of a lifetime.

We all know music has the ability to influence the way people feel and for musicians it can be a way for them to deal with situations in life. Countless artists have produced music reflective of what’s happening around them, inside them, it’s the expression that’s important.

As an artist Ghost has released 3 albums, multiple EP’s, singles, mix CD’s and remixed the likes of Benny Tones, Nicole Willis, Jehst, The Heavy, Coldcut, Bonobo, Verb T. His music has featured in films, he’s had remixes on PS3 games (The Heavy), he’s DJ’d and toured all over Europe and the UK, played Glastonbury, Hip Hop Kemp and DJ supported the likes of Public Enemy. He regularly gives away music as a thank you to the army of fans who have brought up more than 10,000 copies of his releases over the last 7 years.

If you’ve listened to the music or seen any of the hundreds of reviews for those albums you’ll know Ghost has the ability to draw the listener into his multi layered beats and engage them on a deeper level than most. 2nd album ‘Freedom of Thought’ was critically acclaimed and took him out of his straight Hip Hop listenership into a wider audience without sacrificing his trademark melodic beats.

So December 2011, Ghost, now a proud father of 2 boys (one 2 years old and the other 5 months old) heard the news that his love and partner had a rare form of cancer. Although treatable, ahead lies 6 months of treatment and hopefully a happy outcome.

‘A Tale of Life in VI Parts’ was started when it became clear something might be wrong and tracks the emotional journey of contemplating life whilst waiting for results. Taking inspiration from composer Philip Glass, Ghost takes you to deep and dark places but maintains a strength of character throughout its 22 minutes. Heavily orchestrated strings, pianos and drums are the backdrop to the EP giving it a genuine cinematic feel.

‘A Tale of Life in VI Parts’ was made for the listener to enjoy from start to finish without pause, so we highly recommend you find a spot of quiet time in your schedule and turn off your mobile volume, switch the TV off, maybe even grab the headphones and enjoy.

This is a name your price release, the emphasis being to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of seeing your doctor if you’re worried about a lump anywhere, do not think it will go away it won’t.

The dream of every artist is to realize his or her loftiest ambition free from any hindrance that might disrupt the creative process. On our first 2 EPs, So Hideous has attempted to push our individual and collective musical boundaries by broadening the scope of instrumentation and raising the bar on the quality of production. While these EPs dabbled in violent chamber music, the ultimate goal has always been to compose the loudest and most emotionally draining symphony ever recorded. On our upcoming release, we are excited to build on our existing sound with the addition of lavish string arrangements, a small choir and a brass section. We truly feel as if we have only scratched the surface of our full potential as a collective. With this record we are striving to expand our musical palette to incorporate more dissonant and consonant melodies whilst having each piece tie the album together as a cohesive unit. This has always been an ambitious project, but its members are humble enough to know when to ask for help with its completion. With this Kickstarter campaign, we are trying to generate enough funding to bring the best possible experience we are capable of to our listeners...and to make our passion a reality.
Thank You
So Hideous...

EP: The Beauty The World Makes Us Hope For - A

Band: The Beauty The World Makes Us Hope For
Album: A EP
Label: Self Released
Year: 2012

01. With These Foreign Feet Which Surprise Us, Let's Leap Into The Sea
02. From These Pains Wings Are Spurting And Then Vanishing In The Midst Of A Dance
03. Matter Piles Up, Knowledge Is Passed On, Curiosity Leads To Many Feats

The Beauty The World Makes Us Hope For (TBTWMUHF) consists by four musicians who are willing to share the composition of music expressing emotions, instinct and sincerity.

Originally from Annecy, the group formed in 2009 and consists of two guitarists, Peter V. and Anthony H., tempting an invitation to travel and personal interpretation - and a drummer, Lauriane S., whose intention is to advance the time . In 2011 the change in the back of the drum kit with Cedric and the arrival of bassist Quentin reinforces the spirit of the group.

TBTWMUHF is also the desire to remember all the simple things we forget on the edge of our lives and touched by the beauty of a moment and carried away by the sweetness of melody.

The first EP "A", released in 2012, is inspired by real events and escapes by your imagination. It tells stories whose meaning are not told but the direction is given.

EP: Hesus Attor - Señorai

Band: Hesus Attor
Album: Señorai EP
Label: Geenger Records
Year: 2011

01. Pardonian Clouds
02. Señorai
03. Psyclick
04. Vox Of Archibald

In the harbour town of Rijeka, Croatia a small group of lovers of fast food and the local cuisine has given birth to a surrealistic monster which they have named Hesus Attor. They have equipped it with what they have read in comic books and seen in horror movies, but above all with a classic set of instruments every metal, rock, punk, hardcore or crossover band must have. The outcome is spectacular: a mixture of parody, schizophrenia and the absurd.

Between 2003 and 2005 Hesus Attor experimented with many musical genres, in the beginning as an instrumental trio. They self-released the results of their experiments calling their label Izdali Smo Metal (We Betrayed Metal). After Monade i dia peti (2003) and Vamonos Todos (2005) the group of gourmands consisting of Juan Pablo Pe De Rigad, Senor JosÈ and Digitus were joined by singer El Cathedralico who gave the monster a voice. In the summer of 2006 they released Green Feathers and Canaries, a mini-album which made the listener realize that the guys were being serious. This was even more audible on stage. Squeezing genre after subgenre, jumping from the developed to the undeveloped, from smoky ethno to sweaty heavy metal they rose from anonymity and made the earth shake in Kvarner, their home region, and elsewhere.

The shockwaves were perceived by Mr. Moonlee (Moonlee Records) who could not help himself but widen his colourful clan by those who have betrayed metal .

Hesus Attor do not hide their influences, their metal and hard core origins, but they often look back on them through a magnifying glass of irony and satire. Nothing is sacred to them. They devour and digest everything, only to spit it out again. By disregarding tradition, using deconstruction and a dadaistic concept, Hesus Attor and their mathematically precise anti-mixture of musical genres have placed themselves outside of every framework. Listening to their music causes avant-garde claustrophobia. They are as untameable as Mr. Bungle once was and Mike Patton still is. They do not fear the comparison with the Japanese demons Boredoms and Ruins; in fact they seem to be cross-bred with them. Just like John Zorn was in Naked City s good years.

The time has come for a new step, a new album. It was cooked and fried in Rijeka s catacombs for over a year just to be ready in time for mass consumption in September 2008. Moonlee Records proudly presents Sonic Gastronomy Volume 1.

Listening to the album you will realize that not only your digestive system is being tested, but also your patience and your ability to concentrate. Take the record into your hands. A blow below the belt and an unbelievable cultural electroshock await you.

In case anybody was wondering why all these allusions to food: The guys like to eat. Hence all their lyrics are about   food.

Señorai is their latest release.

Nils Frahm, born on September 20th, 1982, had an early introduction to music. During his childhood he was taught to play piano by Nahum Brodski – a student of the last scholar of Tschaikowski. It was through this that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of the classical pianists before him as well as contemporary composers.

Today Nils Frahm works as an accomplished composer and producer from his Berlin-based Durton Studio, where he has worked and collaborated with many contemporaries such as Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds, Anne Müller, Deaf Center, Efterklang and Dustin O’Halloran amongst other fellow musicians. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, has won him many fans around the world. For a musician this early in his career, Frahm displays an incredibly developed sense of control and restraint in his work, catching the ear of many fans including Thom Yorke, who featured one of Nils’ songs in Radiohead’s HQ office chart. As the recognition continues to grow for his previous solo piano works 'Wintermusik' (2009) and ‘The Bells’ (2009), October 2011 saw the release of his most acclaimed album to date: 'Felt'.

Having recorded his last album live in a large, reverberant church, Nils Frahm now invites you to put on your headphones and dive into a world of microscopic and delicate sounds – so intimate that you could be sitting beside him. Recorded late at night in the reflective solitude and silence of his studio in Berlin, Frahm uncovers a new sound and source of inspiration within these peaceful moments: 'Originally I wanted to do my neighbours a favour by damping the sound of my piano. If I want to play piano during the quiet of the night, the only respectful way is by layering thick felt in front of the strings and using very gentle fingers. It was then that I discovered that my piano sounds beautiful with the damper.’

Captivated by this sonic exposition, he placed the microphones so deep inside the piano that they were almost touching the strings. This brought a host of external sounds to the recordings which most producers would try their hardest to hide: ‘I hear myself breathing and panting, the scraping sound of the piano's action and the creaking of my wooden floorboards – all equally as loud as the music. The music becomes a contingency, a chance, an accident within all this rustling. My heart opens and I wonder what exactly it is that makes me feel so happy.’

'Felt' creates its own personal microcosm, offering a refuge of tender and honest beauty.

They released their first record called" Pequod" on 20 December 2008, under Marsiglia Records, after releasing their EP “We are the superfunkers!” in Febraury 2007.

They  are influenced by the post-rock movement, and most of all we are involved in soundtrack music, as we try to represent and to emphasize with our songs some never-shooted cinematic sequences.

In the last years Dresda made lots of gigs, some songs have been published in some compilations and radio broadcasts. After "Pequod" was released in December 08, the band received many positive reviews from the dedicated press.

In September ’09, the netlabel Asiluum published "Pequod" with a new artwork.

In December ’09, they took part to the Italian edition of the Canadian documentary “RIP! A remix manifesto“, published by Feltrinelli Real Cinema and distributed on DVD nationally.

On January 2010 after using their music into the short movie “La lingua del disordine“, directors Marco Longo and Giorgio Montolivo shooted our first official video “La Stanza e l’Orologio”.

During year 2010 the band worked on motion picture soundtracks: the Italian independent movie “The Krolevsky Case“, and the short movie “La lingua del disordine”.

This band meant and still means a lot to us, but certain circumstances make it impossible for us to continue as we want to. Do not mistake us: we are still best friends and still love making music. Until the final curtain drops in 2013, you will definitely hear from us again – promised! So this is not our last message. And every end may be the beginning of something new… Love – Arktika

Album: Hammock - Departure Songs

16. We Could Die Chasing This Feeling
17. Glossolalia
18. (Leaving) The House Where We Grew Up
19. Tornado Warning

Departure Songs is Hammock's fifth LP and first double album. It was mixed by Tim Powles (The Church), mastered by Taylor Deupree (solo artist and 12K) and features contributions by Keith Kenniff (Helios, Goldmund).

Hammock go massive as they meditate on grand themes of death and loss, their music ever larger, more expansive. Every song a mountaintop vista with a clear view to the horizon, unencumbered by clouds, in all directions. Departure Songs demands that it be played loudly so that the details in each track can breathe, whether it is the androgynous, falsetto vocals of Marc Byrd or the angelic voice of Christine Glass Byrd or just a little bit of guitar in the background, this record is nuanced in a most compelling fashion. The arrangements beg to be picked apart - soaring guitars, propulsive bass, and hypnotic strings. The vocals work wonderfully as an instrument, but when the words finally become understandable, they cause shivers.

Departure Songs is an album about being there and not being there. And how it feels to both be there and have someone else not be there. Presence and absence. Love and grief. Hammock’s music has always been a balm for troubled hearts in troubled times - and here the troubled times are their own. This is intensely personal music, and we are lucky that Hammock will let us listen in.

Not as fragile as previous efforts, Departure Songs shows a more mature songwriting, more assured production, a fuller approach to crafting music. Hammock retains its signature approach to epic music-making, but this time out, herald their muse in all capital letters, with cinematic crescendos and an architect’s ear for structure both within a song and as a sequence of songs. The quiet, more ambient tracks act as both underline and counterbalance to the bigger tracks.

Hammock’s greatest success as musicians is to make music that is, at its heart, completely the saddest music ever made but expressed in a manner that is ecstatic. This is what makes Hammock special - ecstasy through exquisite sadness. Epiphany.

Album: Antennas To Heaven - You Have 6 Weeks To Destroy Everything

Album: You Have 6 Weeks To Destroy Everything
Label: Self Released

01. You Have 6 Weeks To Destroy Everything
02. Who Is Michael J. Fox?
03. We Would Never Speak Again

07. Vaguest Sense Of Regret
08. Collection Of Thoughts From The Office Corridor
09. Log

The third album from Antennas To Heaven sees them continuing to be the main purveyors of postrockspokenwordtronica . The band wanted to move beyond a collection of little stories and work upon a story that unfolds as the album progresses and something that would give the listener more and more to discover on repeated listens. At the same time the album sees Antennas To Heaven further develop their sound, taking on board influences including Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine, Fuck Buttons and The Flaming Lips. And so 'You Have 6 Weeks to Destroy Everything' was born; an album about a man who dicovers time travel.

EP: EF - Delusions Of Grandeur

Band: EF
Album: Delusions Of Grandeur EP
Label: Pelagic Records
Year: 2012

01. Delusions Of Grandeur
02. Fem
03. I Never Felt This Way Before

EF was formed in 2003. In 2006 the band made themselves a name in the post-rock genre with their debut album “Give me beauty… Or give me death!” and the song “Hello Scotland”. The band started to tour Europe intensively.

Second full length album “I am responsible” was released in 2008. A bit darker story. The band moved up to the bigger live venues, played some festivals and also supported bands like Red Sparowes, 65daysofstatic, Aereogramme and many more.

“Mourning golden morning” was released on April 1st 2010. The bands third full length album recorded and produced by Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna). Do we need to say it sounds absolutely amazing!?! The sound have grown, become more focused and dead on. It’s more heavy and raw but still catchy and very dynamic. The album got raving reviews all over Europe and EF did a 6 week tour to support it.

In 2011 the band did their very first Asia tour during two weeks. A incredible experience that is hard to describe but EF will definitely go back. The spring and summer also offered EF some festival appearances and numerous of selected club shows. For example Friction Fest (DE) Dunk! Festival (BE), Wave Gottik Treffen (DE), Bootboohook (DE), Ieper Hardcore Fest (BE) and Stemweder Open Air (DE).

Up to date the band have done 14 European tours and grown to a stable, dynamic and explosive live band. Sometimes we say that EF is one of the hardest working independent bands in Europe. I guess we’re right.

My Sleeping Karma`s fourth alum "Soma" follows the band’s own individualistic and atmospheric path towards enlightenment. Following the meaning of the album title ("Soma" is the intoxicating drink of the gods), the instrumental psychedelic groove rock of the German quartet enhances the consciousness in a truly hypnotic and bewitching manner. The multilayered compositions move skilfully between heavy rock riffs and enchanting melodic parts with a high level of calmness and beauty. "Soma" is visually complimented by Sebastian Jerke’s artwork that is filled with astonishing details and beauty.  "Soma" offers the perfect movie soundtrack to everybody’s own inner journey. Just be warned, you may never want to leave again!

Album: Caspian - Waking Season

Album: Waking Season

Year: 2012

10. Fire Made Flesh

Where previous self-produced efforts impressed yet lacked a real sense of purpose, ‘Waking Season’ has the clockwork-like ethos of producer Matt Bayles (Isis, Minus The Bear) stamped all over it. Each song begins with the aim of arriving at a plain of intelligently-layered majesty, predominately succeeding in doing so. ‘Gone In Bloom And Bough’ utilises programmed drum sounds and gently looping guitars before cascading into a wall of overdrive and haunting vocals. But it is never done at the expense of melody, an aspect that permeates throughout the record: a record that pushes the boundaries of post-rock to stratospheric new levels. -

UK band Blueneck bring their trademark sense of melancholy mood and melody to a new instrumental project called "Epilogue", due for worldwide release on Denovali records in October 2012. Typically known for the distinctive haunting vocals of mainman Duncan Attwood, "Epilogue" takes a deliberately different approach. Inspired by Attwood's recently commissioned solo work on soundtracks for independent films, not to mention the influence of inspirational composers and soundscapers such as Brian Eno, Air, John Carpenter and Clint Mansell, this vocal-free release is the soundtrack to an (as yet) imaginary film. "Epilogue" follows a trio of critically-acclaimed full length albums (2006's Scars of the Midwest; 2009's The Fallen Host ; 2011's Repetitions).

Attwood says ""Epilogue" is intended as both the start and end of a number of distinct creative periods. It's a bookend to our three previous full-length vocal albums, a statement of intent on our parallel soundtrack work, and a means of clearing our collective minds before we started work on our new recording. It's our intention that the Blueneck you hear in the future will be markedly different to what you hear on this release". The band are currently working on the release of their fourth full-length vocal album, as yet untitled, due for release on Denovali in 2013.
