Fourteen Nights At Sea is a ship with no captain. Borne of the tides, some untold force propels them, ever gaining momentum. Melbourne’s premier instrumental post-rock horde have become a fearsome, thoughtful force to be drank in, wholly and willingly.
Fourteen Nights At Sea has fashioned a third full-length album of tremendous beauty and depth, played with a dark, wistful restraint throughout. Minor Light is eerie and iridescent, composed and captured with mesmerising attention to detail, guided by the band’s most intricate and intimate guitar passages to date, full of delicate transitions and soulful punctuations. While the band works with the transition between Drew Watson and long time friend / engineer Lara Soulio, a stronger FNAS works its slow build and burn with newfound patience, sinuousness and ferocity.
It is tricky to distill what has made FNAS so compelling to so many critics and fans over their almost decade-long history. More than ever, the players keep their heads down, creating wonderful multi-movement instrumental works, overflowing with attention to tone and timbre.
