The Inquisition: 063.So Hideous

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Name is from a documentary on Dario Argento. Got sued in 2011 for using it…shortened it.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

The songs are either written on the piano in full or entered into a notation program on my phone if any instruments are unavailable. It’s better for me to have a strong idea of how the entire piece will play out initially and work to explore the various permutations of it with the band. Not really into jamming… we have to use our time wisely.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

During the writing of Laurestine there was a lot of Vivaldi, Max Richter, Suffocate For Fuck Sake and The Weeknd on at home.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

The Smashing Pumpkins: Adore.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Nirvana: Nevermind. With my allowance...

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Olafur Arnalds. It would be fantastic to play alongside a chamber ensemble and composer of that magnitude.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

The internet absolutely aids in getting the music to fans and trolls alike. I was most surprised by our reach in Russia but maybe some of the more histrionic, romantic style chords resonate there… Ahuenno

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

These are fantastic promotional tools but my feeling is that we are on the precipice of a change in the model within the next five years or so. We have to develop a happier medium between the accessibility of product without completely devaluing it.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Sounding very different.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

For our purposes, only if it’s coupled with a strong album. A nice cover with substandard or mediocre sound means you have a friend who’s a great graphic designer.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

MONO: Hymn To The Immortal Wind. The cover tells you everything about the record sonically and conceptually.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

I’m not one of those audiophiles or purists but I believe some it has to do with the tangible and ritualistic (take out of jacket, study sleeve/lyrics, immerse yourself in record as needle hits, etc.) elements of it. When your music is on a phone some of the time you’re less invested and more blocking out the sound of people on the L train or gearing up for a workout.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Recording the orchestra and choir for Laurestine was the textbook cliche dreams coming true moment. It’s one thing to carry that sound with you in your “head” for years but another all together to have it and your hard work realized by exceptionally talented musicians at the top of their game. Forever grateful.

So Hideous are releasing their new album on 16 October via Prosthetic Records.

The Inquisition: 062.Glaciers

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Chuck (guitars): After a few months of practicing and kicking around names, my wife suggested we call it GLACIER and we loved that, and just made it plural.
Wig (bass): We decided to name the band Blood for the King and we loved that, so then we just made it plural and called it Glaciers
Matt (guitars): The band was named before I joined, however I have to say that I was really attracted to the name. It inspires a sense of heaviness on a geologic time scale.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Chuck: Well, I tend to bring a riff or half-baked pie or corndog to a practice and then it takes a life on of its own. Like a conventional oven. The first album, And The Sea Won the Battle, was pretty much carved out on my own and then taught to the other guys, however it would not be fair to say I wrote it on my own. The second and most recent album, Mirrored Through The Ancients, was definitely written as a band, where everyone contributed. We spent a lot of time writing the second album together.
Wig: No, Yes
Matt: Generally songs are born from a basic idea or riff that chuck brings to the practice space and we collectively develop parts, add color, etc. Less frequently songs come out (like Southwest of heaven) of just improvising in the practice space.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Chuck: Life and fatherhood is my biggest influence at this point in my life - at home, I tend to listen to a fair amount of jazz music, or play important classic albums to my daughter. I'll get adventurous in my car. At the beginning of the bands formation, I was definitely listening to a fair amount of instrumental music, and searching for experimental 'out there' music, but I feel that as of late, I listen to more conventional or punk/rock music, such as all of John Reis's projects, a lot of 70s stuff like Television, Ramones, Misfits, Damned, or even stuff like The Wipers. I love High On Fire, Mastodon too.
Wig: Punk, metal, weird rap, world funk, soul, mathrock, and a few other things
Matt: I like to look to nature for inspiration, sometimes I imagine what an eddy in a river or a gust of wind blowing leaves across the ground sound like in a guitar melody. I've been listening to a lot of 70's proto-metal, kraut rock and proggy stuff. I also keep gravitating toward metal / post-metal stuff that is more on the sludge, doom side of the scale.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

Chuck: Uggh. Soulside "Hot Bodi-gram", Slint "Spiderland", Hot Snakes "Automatic Midnight", Sonic Youth "Goo", Blonde Redhead "Fake Can Be Just As Good", Radiohead "OK Computer", Replacements 'Let It Be', Husker Du "Zen Arcade" Joy Division "Unknown Pleasures"...Jesus I can't do one, sorry. I could type this out for days.
Wig: Purple Rain
Matt: Mars Volta - De-loused... really impossible question.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Chuck: I remember buying a Beach Boys tape in fifth grade. vinyl? I still remember the day I went to Budget Tapes & Records in Charleston, WV and bought an Agent Orange, Suicidal Tendencies and MDC LP in 7th grade. Or maybe it was Gov't Issue or Verbal Assault. Formative years!
Wig: Maiden / Number of the Beast

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Chuck: Minor Threat or James Brown.
Wig: Shellac [also borrow their gear]

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Chuck: Well, the internet definitely enabled us to do it ourselves, and handle the direct to consumer aspect of self releasing our album. I love that. We never even considered asking another label to put out our records. Whenever we release a new album, vinyl collective's message board was really supportive and drove an incredible amount of sales. Thanks guys. A few other blogs wrote some really awesome things. As far as places? We saw a decent amount of orders going to Norway and Australia - that's pretty mind blowing.
Wig: Yes, I was surprised that anyone outside of our practice space would ever care about it.
Matt: No question, really impressed by how many people in Europe and Eastern Europe are into this style of music.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

Chuck: Sure. We don't do the band as a full time job, so my opinion on this matter will be different that what Taylor Swift, or even a hard working touring band that relays on every penny says. I don't have a team of people in place to employ, or rely on album sales to support my family. If I did, I might feel different. But - times are changing, and how people consume, digest and poop out music is different than what it was even 12 months ago, and I believe you have to adapt. So if that means we stream music for free, give away mp3s, and stand on a milk crate asking for $12 for a vinyl version, then so be it. I'm just happy to be creating music with my best friends.
Wig: Yes, bandcamp is awesome, I wished that I went to band camp when I was a kid.
Matt: Definitely yes but to echo what Chuck is saying that we can afford the lumps you take in a DIY environment because Glaciers is not the only thing we do as individuals.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Chuck: - same place as we are now - best friends creating sonic soundscapes and songs as a form of self-expression and artistry (as well as a good excuse to bring beer).
Wig: playing punk music and much better looking
Matt: World tour, signed to a major label, quitting day job... just kidding

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Chuck: Yes
Wig: The artwork is important to those who choose to look at the artwork
Matt: The artwork will always be a critical part of the equation especially with instrumental bands.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

Wig: Spinal Tap - The Black Album

*Smell the Glove or The Black Album, is the name of a fictional album by the mock heavy-metal band Spinal Tap in the movie This Is Spinal Tap. It was released by Polymer Records, a parody of Polydor, who released the movie's real-life soundtrack album)

Matt: Floyd "Wish You Were Here"

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Chuck: CDs are a disposable piece of plastic, whereas with vinyl, there's a much more tangible wow factor to them. Plus they have been around forever, and people were able to make cool things with them, such as color vinyl, shaped discs and picture discs. CDs? Not so much. I guess I would prefer vinyl, although I love digital. I'm more about the music/message than the format to be honest.
Wig: Vinyl will be there for us when Y2K shuts down the digital era
Matt: It's great! love the inconvenience!

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

Chuck: I can remember us drinking rose wine and eating del taco once in orange county in the middle of night, and just being so happy to be with my friends. Other than that, I remember when we were writing Mirrored Through the Ancients, that we had really created something special as band.
Wig: SXSW

Exclusive Track: Zachary Reid - We Break Backs And Bend Wills

Zachary Reid is the eponymous pseudonym used by ambient producer and composer Zack Hansen, also know as a founding member and drummer of Tucson based doom monsters North (Prosthetic Records), and grind band Languish (Battleground Records/Crown and Throne Inc).
What started as pure noise on his end, a cacophony of misplaced notes played out painstakingly on a darkened computer keyboard. The outlet for stifled creativity and frustration with all music eventually turned into something more. Actual music.
After what felt like an eternity of electronic tinkering, his debut album “Songs For Cyanide” was released like a dull murmur into the nothingness in early 2014. An amalgamation of cackling noise, soothing synths, and distorted samples ripped from nothingness, replete with vicious critiques about the state of modern theology throughout the work, “Songs For Cyanide” reflected it’s bitter epithet.
“I was almost embarrassed by it, this personal of an album with my name on it, it was something I’d never done before” Zack says. The album went unheard for the most part, no physical medium in site and Zachary had no interest in sending it to anyone, content to leave it on bandcamp.
The project stagnated, until a series of live opportunities sprang into existence. “I had several friends coming through Tucson and not enough bands to play, so I thought, why not?”. The only problem was “Songs For Cyanide” was entirely created on a computer with virtual instruments and samples, the question was how would Zachary Reid be played live? Zachary set out to build a live set that could be accurately represent his music. Thus the first live shows were performed. “I then realized I had written an entire album for live purposes and I actually really liked the songs” he says. From these live shows, the next album was created.
“My Return To The Ground Will Be Lonely” is a dramatic, despair filled, compilation of music composed entirely for solo live performances. A profound loneliness and a foreboding sense of doom about the human condition flood the work which is replete with lush synthesizers and distorted drones. “It’s not hopeful music, if anything it’s what happens when you’ve given up hope”.
Now both albums are ready for the world, with simultaneous cassette releases being readied by Zachary Reid’s own label, Precarian Media, with “My Return To The Ground Will Be Lonely” coming digitally as well. Limited to 50 white cassettes for Songs For Cyanide and 100 black cassettes for My Return To The Ground Will Be Lonely, followed by the first ever Zachary Reid tour, scheduled to make stops in El Paso, Tucson, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Phoenix alongside Memphis based ambient guitar wizard Holy Gallows.

The Inquisition: 061.Raum Kingdom

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Hey, Its great to be here and do this for you guys. Yea for a long time we where trying to figure out a name and as all the one word names where taken we had to take a name that an elderly lady said. We where all getting a taxi home from a piano bar we frequent and the taxi driver, an elderly lady was doing the drops. She heard us chatting as we were discussing the name of the band, she then started babbling on about this thing Raum Kingdom. A few days later we started talking about what we she said and we couldn't really remember what she was on about. But we all remembered Raum Kingdom and we all thought it sounded cool, and nobody had it, so we went with it.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Well we basically listen to music that bleeds the pockets of parents of teenagers on high volume and we just try and play louder over that..... that's where the aggression comes from, trying to drown out all that noise that enters our heads, and we play until our heads are clear. Then a riff, a bass line or a beat gets going and we jam that till we don't like it anymore, then change it too something we like.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

All of our influences are different and what inspires us, be it music, art, film, culture, family, events in our lives etc etc. So our expression is an outlet from all that influence. As for what we listen too at home, Dave (singer) listens to white noise for hours, Ronan (bass) listens to the Irish national anthem, Andrew (guitar) listens to 1920's playlists repeatedly and Mark (drums) walks around the house naked listening to Beethoven. That should be an accurate explanation of what we listen too at home and as people.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

That's a massive question. I think if by magic all our music was gone we would go insane. Probably a family photo album would be one.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

We're so old we can't remember. So probably bands back in the 90's when trash metal was in.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Ah Jeez! such a question. Ehm There are a massive amount of bands we would would love to play or even jam with. I mean where would one start trying to explain. To be realistic about it, the band would have to be a local Europe band that we could have relativity good access too, unless we got lucky and we ourselves were approached.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

The internet is amazing for that sort of exposure. We have been blown away and humbled by all the reviews and comments about what we do. As we are from Ireland and we all work and have families, it would of been a dead end or at least very difficult to get the music out there if it wasn't for the internet. So it takes a lot of effort from all involved to stay on top of it. We got a review in Japanesse and we where pretty surprised about that due to the fact we never thought someone would of picked it up that far away so quick.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

Its a tough world out there, and we don't think that the world was ready for the internet, so services that you mentioned and more are vital to all music lovers out there, with the internet there is so much more ways to discover good music. People generally won't actively go looking for music that they would like and you read comments like " Music isn't as good as used to be" and so they succumb to liking what's on the radio or nostalgia music or just not being into music as they get older.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

It would be great to say exactly. But we think that in 5 years we would have an LP out and hopefully be playing at some of the larger festivals in mainland Europe. Musically we will have evolved but keeping the same tone and context. If not that, split up and wishing we hadn't haha.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

We think art is very important to emotion and mood for the individual and group psyche regardless. It plays a large roll in visually representing the tone and intent of the music and band too the band and the fans alike. So when time and focus is put in to creating the art, it engrains a deeper seed for the passion involved.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

We love the art of lots of bands. Some bands make political statements and some bands use artists. Also it varies from time to time as we appreciate many album covers.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

There is a lot of debate about sound quality from vinyl. But we think it's a subjective argument, People just LIKE that it sounds different than other formats regardless if its better. People who are purchasing vinyl now I'd imagine to be more specialized music lovers than just casual music listeners, so the vinyl product feels like more of a purchase and satisfies the passion better. As CD's was a much more accessible format so it was hit harder in the digital format age as digital formats are now the easy accessible format that can get to the masses with ease.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

All of them at the moment haha. We reckon playing in Belgium was a great experience for us. We where playing with Belgian "Group All We Expected" and the response and support we received was amazing as we had never experienced this. There is a great scene happening there and a lot of people get what we are about. So for us it was a great learning curve and definitely something we will all remember.

Raum Kingdom are releasing a split with All We Expected in September and believe me when I say it sounds amazing! You can listen on CVLT Nation.

The Inquisition: 060.Our Ceasing Voice

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

Reinhard, me and some other friends started the band before we could even play any instruments. The name Our Ceasing Voice is based on the importance of people to speak up for things they believe in. And the danger of not doing it.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Nowadays, we can't really jam because we're all in different cities. So, since I'm the main songwriter, I'm just recording ideas, songs, demos, whatever you want to call that - and show it to the others for opinions and suggestions. Then we write and record from there.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

I think we all have pretty broad influences. As a musician it's important to always keep your eyes and ears open. I listen to a lot of mellow singer-songwriter stuff, rock albums, ambient - I love melancholic music.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

That changes from week to week, but I guess it's either be Matthew Ryan's Mayday, or Stars Of The Lid's Refinement Of The Decline.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

I can't really remember, but an early one I do remember is a Greatest Hits Album by Roxette. The Look and Joyride are still guilty pleasures of mine.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Obviously, I'd love for our studio collaboration with Matthew Ryan to be transferred to the stage. I can imagine us to tour with a mellow ambient act, like A Winged Victory For The Sullen or Hammock.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to.

The internet has been our main medium for spreading our music. Since we started in 2006, we've always been huge supporters of the internet-music-scene. It's really great to see our music spread around the globe. And like your questions implies, it's all possible because of the internet. The further the music travels, the more surprising for us it is though.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

Bandcamp is awesome and so is Spotify. Clearly, there are certain issues that need to be addressed, in terms of fairness to the artists and labels, etc. Music needs to be worth something to people again. Bandcamp and to some extent Spotify too, are trying to show them exactly that.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Somewhere on a lonely island. The Caribbean maybe? Seriously though: As a band, I hope we'll have put out a couple records that we've enjoyed making and played some shows.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Why wouldn't it be? Just because most people don't hold a CD in their hands anymore, doesn't mean that it's become obsolete.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

I can't pick a favorite, but the last one I really liked was The Wooden Sky's cover for Let's Be Ready. It's just a picture of some café or diner, but it's intriguing and somehow captures the mood of the record perfectly.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

I listen to music on Spotify, vinyl and buy MP3s on bandcamp. I think it's cool to have something to collect and to look at. And I buy them in order to support artists I like.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

There are many moments we'll never forget. Seeing people enjoy what we're doing is great. Being on stage is an incredible feeling. And for me it's always the first chord we play that makes me feel alive.

Our Ceasing Voice are in the studio recording their third album and planned some shows in October.

The Inquisition: 059.Wiegedood (answered by Levy Seynaeve)

1. How did you decided to create and came up with the name of the band?

The band name translates into how powerless we stand in life. There’s only so much you can control. Good or bad, you have to let most things in life just wash over you and try to cope with any emotional or physical damage it inflicts upon you. There’s no certainty of things going one way or another and more often than not, things go wrong.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Mostly one of us comes up with a basic idea which we then further mold into a song at rehearsals. We never really just stand around jamming. It just doesn’t work for us. We need the songs to be more thought out than a random coincidence on rehearsal. That mostly leads nowhere for us.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

We don’t let the fact that we play a certain genre of music limit us too much. Of course we’re influenced by a variety of black metal bands but we don’t limit ourselves to just that. Although it’s not always in an obvious way, there’s a lot of other influences that sneak into the songs. If we feel it makes sense we’ll allow it.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

I really can’t say honestly. I need variety when it comes to music so choosing one album I’d have to listen to for the rest of my life would probably ruin that record for me.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

I bought Killers by Iron Maiden when I was about 14 years old I think.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

We did a tour recently with Treha Sektori and we’d do it again any time.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

In this day and age you can’t really avoid internet so I definitely think it plays a big part in getting our name out there but it’s certainly not enough. Touring is just as essential. I don’t recall any big surprises concerning the places our album got ordered from. It’s always flattering though to see people from the other side of the globe appreciate what we do. I guess that’s one of the perks of the internet.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

Yes, definitely seeing that anyone can download any album they want for free if you do some searching on the internet. It’s nice that there’s still people who are willing to contribute something to the bands they listen to. Whether it’s buying vinyl, CD’s or digital albums.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

On a stage somewhere…

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

To us, yes. It’s a way to add a visual aspect to the album and the atmosphere you’re trying to create. It would be a waste to leave that extra dimension for what it is and not exploit its full potential. It won’t make up for bad record but it can take a good record to the next level if you ask me.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

Transylvanian Hunger by Darkthrone.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

I prefer vinyl myself. I value the physical and visual aspect of a record and I think that’s one of the reasons people are getting back to buying vinyl records. There’s no better or worse when it comes to music formats as long as you contribute something to the bands you like.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as a band?

The release show we did for “De Doden Hebben Het Goed” at a chapel in Kortrijk. Those interested can check it out through the link below.

Wiegedood released their debut album a few months ago, one of the best black-metal releases of the year.
