The Inquisition: 082.BARST

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

In Dutch, BARST has several meanings. It means 'fuck you, I'll do what I want to do'. It also means 'crack', bursting through something. I finally burst through the dark, that was really how it felt when doing my solo thing. No more boundaries. Just hitting it hard, as hard as possible, and bursting through.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Gosh, that’s so hard to explain.  Sometimes I start off with a riff, playing it over and over like a mantra. I then come in a sort of hypnosis. I also work with loopers all the time. Creating layer over layer. Then I search some electronics sounds to make it sound thicker. But sometimes I start off with a rhythm, another time I will start with synths and arpeggiators. I think it is a very organic way of working.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

I try to as eclectic as possible, soak in as much as I can. But you can say that Sonic Youth formed me as a guitar player. Stepping away from the classic guitar player path. Nowadays I don’t listen to Sonic youth as often as back in the days. I love their early work, till Daydream Nation. There or some really good songs and albums after that, but they didn’t touch me as hard as the earlier work. I also love the album ‘Hold’ by James Welburn. Last couple of weeks that album was on my turntable several times. It is the perfect album. It inspired me a lot when, working on ‘The Western Lands’. Next to that I am really into 65daysofstatic, And So I Watch You From Afar, GY!BE, Mogwai, it is an endless list.

4. How difficult was to cooperate with so many guests on your latest album?

In fact, it was not really that hard. Again, the process was very organic. On the other hand I had these guests in the back of my head the entire creative process. When I had a kind of skeleton for a piece, I asked them to listen, to do their thing and so they did. After that I worked and reworked it until it was perfect for me. But it was not hard at all. It was pure inspiration and fun.

5. Which is the one album you can't live without?

That’s an impossible question. Let’s say that today it will be ‘Sister’ by Sonic Youth, but I need the freedom to choose another one tomorrow. Life without music is unthinkable, so narrowing it down to just one, is just not possible.

6. What's the first record you've ever bought?

I think I bought two that day, I must have been 10, 11 years old. ‘4us’ by the Dutch band Doe Maar and Iron Maiden’s ‘Number Of The Beast’.

7. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Again, these limitations! Only one? I think first of all, it must be cool and fun be to hang around with the people, because being on tour is hard work and little sleep. So, when it becomes edgy, you need to be around good people. I would love to tour with Sal-Ocin from Empusae. I think that maybe the guys from Mogwai are rather chill people, that should be fun. Let’s rather make it a festival with Do Make Say Think, Amenra, Mogwai, Empusae, And So I watch You From Afar, Monnik, Eleanora, ESLLY, and so much more (smiley).

8. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Yes, for sure. But the backing of a great label like Consouling Sounds is primordial. Without people like them with ideas, vision and connections, internet will not get you far I think. It’s those people who make sure your music gets around. And after that, off course, internet spreads their word. It’s really fulfilling to see that my music id being bought from Japan to south America, Canada, Russia. It’s amazing when you think about it.

9. Do you support the idea of Bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like Spotify?

Well, I just want my music to be heard really, I don’t care through what channel.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years. What's the next step for BARST?

I really can’t say, I don’t want to jinx it, and I really haven’t got a clue. I hope I will be making records and that I will be performing a lot.

11. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

For sure, it is face of the album and we all remember faces. It also brings the element of recognition. When thinking of an album, I hear the music in my head and I see the cover before my eyes. In one way or another, the cover will also connect with the music. I’m so happy with the work Niels Verwijk did on ‘The Western Lands’, capturing the music, the concept, the everything. When you think about ‘The Western Lands’, I’m sure you see the cover before your eyes immediately.

12. What is your favourite album cover?

Damn, this really is the inquisition! Honestly, for the moment it is the cover of ‘The Western Lands’, it is just so perfect. Niels did such an amazing job there. But that’s just a very personal and emotional choice, I guess you can forgive me that.

13. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Oh, I am a vinyl kind off guy you know. I just love the concept. I love the physical item, I love to hold it in my hands. Open it. Put it on the turntable. Sit down, listen. Looking at the artwork while listening. Vinyl makes the listening experience kind off sacral.

14. What's the most vivid story or moment as an artist?

In the meantime I really played quite a lot of concerts, but I remember vividly one of the first solo concerts, when Mike and Nele from my label ‘Consouling Sounds’ were there and after the concert they came to me and told me they wanted me on their label. As an artist, to get that kind of recognition is everything. Another moment could be to see Mathieu Vandekerckhove, Amenra’s guitar player, in the audience while I was playing a show. Seeing him nodding his head with approval, yeah, those are good moments.

Album: The Western Lands

Year: 2016

Tracklist
01. Side A: The Treshold/The Rite/The Passage
02. Side B: The Western Lands/The Fields
Streaming / Buy

After having released the critically acclaimed three-way collab album with Treha Sektori and RM74, numerous cassettes, and a whole lot of live shows, BARST is finally ready to present his full length debut album “The Western Lands”. This is an obvious reference to William S. Burroughs. The fragmented, the transcendental and the viscerally unsettling of his work was taken as an inspiration point to build up the massive effort that is BARST’s debut full length. Moreover, the cut-up technique of Burroughs earlier work, where layer upon layer is fitted to build up a work of art, is exactly BARST’s modus operandi too. Cutting up sounds, and layering them from very subtle to incredibly huge is in BARST’s DNA.

To reach the massive sound achieved on the “The Western Lands”, he had the help of an amazing riches of musicians like Mike Armine (Rosetta), Dehn Sora (Treha Sektori, Sembler Deah, …), Karen Willems (Inwolves), Mathieu Mathlovsky(Mathlovsky), Nicolas Van Meirhaeghe (Empusae, Onus,…), An-Sofie De Meyer (FÄR), Tokyo Oyo and Herr Man. The album is one epic trip, encompassing ambient, drone, metal, shoegaze and electronica. “The Western Lands” captures a multitude of musical universes, and blends them seamlessly together in one of the most complete albums we have ever heard. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Tim De Gieter at Much Luv Studio. The artwork, which reflects the same inspiration, was expertly executed by Niels Verwijk.

Video Premiere: Ciempiés - Placenta

Today we are premiering the first official video by Ciempiés and their song "Placenta" from the EP Menos Que Cero.

Ciempiés is the solo project of the Spanish musician Fran H. recently signed to Sportklub Rotter Damm label.

His first work appeared in March of 2014 in demo format. Seven songs that had been recorded throughout January / February of 2014 and that after being published on the web obtained a good response within the more "post-rocker" audience.

Ciempiés' music could be defined as ambient / post-rock / shoegaze but without falling into the classic sound of the bands of these styles. Mostly the project is characterized by the use of acoustic instruments, soft and distant guitars combined with occasional doses of distortion, as well as electronic instruments, DIY machinery, synthesizers, field recordings, etc ... Although the biggest bet of Ciempiés is always perform songs with a high emotional content that are capable of transmitting the joy and sadness of the people we live in these days.

The Inquisition: 081.Lost In Kiev

1.How did you came up with the name of the band?

Yoann: Thanks for asking this question. Well actually it’s not at all a name linked to any political stuff. So, to explain, the girlfriend of our former guitarist is from Kiev and he visited her quite often a few years ago. And one day, he did not give us any news; he was late at the rehearsal. There was a huge snowstorm in Kiev, so I was not able to flight back on time. So we said that he was Lost In Kiev. We liked that name a lot and we decided to name our band like that.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

Yoann: To my mind, we are overthinking during the creation process. I hope that you can notice that while listening to the album haha. Seriously we are searching a main riff, and then we are reworking and arranging it to find how we will be able to use it for a new track. We are also working a lot in home studio, jamming, recording, cut and paste everything in order to obtain the best version of our initial idea.
Dimitri: I am personally a huge fan of band jamming session. It’s always interesting to try everything with a riff and at the end to keep the best ideas. It’s a very different approach and to me it’s by far more creative than being alone at home recording riffs on your computer.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

Yoann: Battles, 65 days of statics, Clint Mansell, Pedro the Lion, but also french singer like Michel Cloup or Alain Bashung (l'inprudence ou Bleu pétrole).
Dimitri: I am a huge Deftones fan! I am still listening a lot of their work even if I have been a little disappointed by their last album. Otherwise, currently I’m enjoying artists such as Isis, Portishead, If this trees could talk, The Prodigy, De Staat (discovered them quite recently).
Max: A very wide range of stuff. At home, a lot of electro or movies soundtracks, but also many rock albums depending of my mood.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

Yoann: Misery is A Butterfly, Blonde Redhead
Dimitri: Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd
Max: Vheissu, Thrice
Jc: The Chemical Brothers, Surrender

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Dimitri: Adrenaline, Deftones
Max: "The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move...It's the Infectious Grooves" by The Infectious Grooves. At this time I did not know them, but the artwork was funny, so I bought it.
Jc: Silmarils in 1995 ! Still an amazing album of neo hip hop metal.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Yoann: 65daysofstatics would be great.
Max: 65 daysofstatic would be awesome, yeah.
Dimitri: If These Trees Could Talk
Jc: Cult of Luna

7. Did the internet and especially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world? Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Yoann: Yes it helped a lot. We were very surprised to get a lot of support from Mexico or Greece for example (as we are not at all doing a music in the vibe of Maserati).
Dimitri: True Story...
Max: For sure, today it is the best tool and communication way to us. As it could be pretty quick to be forgotten by people, we have to work and pay a lot of attention to all the Internet medias.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

Dimitri: Yes it is a great idea. It’s by far better than to demand a fix price to our fans (especially for digital). On the other hand, for CDs and LPs, we had to invest a lot, so I think that it’s normal to ask for a fix price for these. And well if someone wants to illegally download Nuit Noire, I’ll not blame him. The most important is that our music is listening by a wide range of people.
Max: Bandcamp is truly an interesting way of selling our music as independent artist. On the opposite of big platforms such as ITunes, the margins are very comfortable for artists.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Yoann: Two new LPs. We have been waiting too many time to release new music that we are really in a creative process now.
Dimitri: And live shows all around the planet (we’ve never been to Asia and to the US).

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

Yoann: Yes, it is a real identity. Without this, it would be like people without faces. All these little pixels are giving a real life and warmth to the digital market.
Dimitri: Our identity moreover, because Yoann is in charge of all our artworks that are linked to our visual effects and video on stage. This is the Lost in Kiev artwork package.

11. What is your favorite album cover?

Dimitri: Rage Against The machine, the first album with the burning monk. The meaning is so strong that absolutely no title is required for this great LP.

Max: I’m quite fan of the artwork of Eternal Kingdom by Cult of Luna.

Jc: To me the best artwork is Vertikal from Cult of Luna.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

Yoann: Music is a gift. A gift must have a great packaging. To me a CD is too small to let a band express its entire universe. This is where vinyl is a true winner. On the other hand, the vinyl is an, analog music support, so there is a real physical and even sensual feeling with it. Totally the opposite of digital that can become sometime overwhelming.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as an artist?

Dimitri: In Lithuania we played pretty early for the DevilStone festival (4:30pm) and sadly under the rain. Even with this, after 3 tracks there was a huge crowd. Each time I was looking at people there, they were smiling or enjoying the show by closing their eyes under their hoodies. It is my best live moment as an artist.
Max: Totally different style, but after a cool show in Prague, we had a party in the town centre and after we realized that we had nowhere to sleep, so we decided to sleep in our van. Annoying on the moment! But it became such great memories.
Jc: To me it was a show in Bamberg in Germany. We played in a school, all was a bit DIY, but the vibe was amazing, we shared stage with great bands and the after in town was priceless (drinking bacon tasted beers!).

Suffocate For Fuck Sake is a Swedish band creating music combining post-rock, sludge, and emotional vocals resembling those of Louise Cyphre or Mihai Edrisch. The band describes their sound as "Sigur Rós, Breach, Cult of Luna, Mono, Mogwai, all playing at the same time".

In their 2008 masterpiece, "Blazing Fires and Helicopters on the Front Page of the Newspaper. There's a War Going On and I'm Marching in Heavy Boots", the samples/story follows a girl, who with help from her mother, a friend, and a doctor, looks back on the time when she was put in a mental institute. It's about losing control over yourself.

There's also a pattern of using samples of spoken Swedish over their tracks. They've also self-released a self-titled four song EP in 2004 entitled 'Suffocate for Fuck Sake.' This release shows the beginnings of their sound, and contains a sampled interview with a man named Hans about his life and medical back problems preventing him from sitting down. It contains the tracks 'Hospital / H / The social worker dragon', 'A / This will melt away on monday', 'N (Le Gilet Fraternel) / Ever Felt Sad?', and 'S (Lesra) / What Would You Have Done If This Never Happened?' The track-listing spells out the self-referential acronym for H.A.N.S.

""Rheia" is the groundbreaking album from Belgium's Oathbreaker. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Loma Prieta), "Rheia" is a true game changer for the genre. Blurring lines and dissolving the boundaries of heavy music as we know it today.

Opener "10:56" begins with a haunting guitar riff and Caro Tanghe's beautifully sung vocal before abruptly soaring to new heights with "Second Son of R". Its blasts of melody mutate into a blackened buzz while waves of tempo changes pound down with intense emotional weight. "Being Able To Feel Nothing" then rolls in like a storm. Chaotically breaking apart to reveal the eye before churning once again. "Stay Here / Accroche-Moi" is an otherworldly reverb drenched acoustic number that leads to "Needles In Your Skin". A deeply personal song that showcases the artistic strength vulnerability brings. It's hard to believe that this is just the half way point of this post everything masterwork. "Immortals" then unfurls as a goose bump inducing monster. This leads to the ambitious "I'm Sorry, This Is", "Where I Live", and "Where I Leave”; A musical triptych that needs to be heard to be believed. All of it comes to an end with mesmerizing closer "Begeerte". Ethereally materializing before vanishing into the beautiful unknown."

The Inquisition: 080.Viva Belgrado

1. How did you came up with the name of the band?

With a previous band we were doing a set of songs with symbolism based on Eastern Europe and one of the lyrics said “Viva Belgrado”. When we had to play our first show we just chose it because we didn’t have anything better.

2. Do you have a standard procedure of creating a song? Do you just jam around or is there a main riff and the track is build up on it?

We normally bring riffs and basic structures from home to the rehearsal place. Then we jam over them until everybody feels happy with what they’re playing. The lyrics are usually assembled at home.

3. What are your influences and what kind of music do you hear when you are at home?

I guess the most obvious are French screamo bands like Daïtro or Sed Non Satiata and some other modern american acts as Touché Amoré or La Dispute. But we listen to plenty of music at home: from Moderat or Nujabes to David Bazan or Pinegrove.

4. Which is the one album you can't live without?

Probably Laisser Vivre les Squelettes by Daïtro. I keep coming back to it every now and then.

5. What's the first record you've ever bought?

Jaio.Musika.Hil by Berri Txarrak back in 2005.

6. Name a band that you would like to share the stage or tour with?

Plenty of them. I’d probably say Lisabö, one of my favourite bands ever.

7. Did the internet and specially the blogs helped to spread your music around the world?Name a place (country) that you were surprised to know your music has reached to?

Definitely yes, we owe a lot to small blogs and the Internet in general. We’re very surprised about plenty of Russian people following us as we’ve never been there yet and we can imagine the language barrier is strong.

8. Do you support the idea of bandcamp where fans can decide the price or services like spotify?

We’ve always put our music on “name your price” and we’ll always do it. Spotify is interesting and easy going but it’s not the best way of supporting small bands.

9. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Hopefully still touring new countries and playing better shows together.

10. Is the artwork of an album important nowadays in the digital era?

I think so. Music is consumed so quickly nowadays that it is important for an artwork to make an impression on the audience. Also physical copies are sold as a fetish and if the artwork is cool they are more likely to sell better.

11. What is you favorite album cover?

I’m a big fan of simple typographic artworks such as Lisabö’s “Ezlekuak” or “Animalia Lotsatuen Putzua”.

12. It seems that a lot of people are turning on vinyl again. Why do you think that is and which is your preferable media format?

As we said before, if the artwork is cool more people are likely to buy it. Nowadays you can have access to your music on your phone so if people are gonna spend money on a physical copy I understand they prefer to buy something that’s nice to hold and touch. I enjoy the ritual of opening a vinyl and playing it on the plate but try to have my favourite albums on FLAC.

13. What's the most vivid story or moment as an artist?

Every tour is full of vivid stories and it’s hard to chose one. Generally I’d say that to be able to work with and see the world with my best friends is the best thing that’s happened to me as an artist.

Code I is, Alex Wilkinson.

Code I launched in 2015 as part of a University project undertaken by it's sole member. Since then, Code I's work has been featured on in radio, magazine and online.

Combining classic post-rock elements of soft flourishing guitar, spacious soundscapes and melodic fragments, this project is not your typical post-rock act. Alex's influences range from hardcore bands such as 'Being as an Ocean', 'August Burns Red' and 'Counterparts' to post rock classics like 'Red Sparowes' and 'God is an Astronaut'.

Alex has been extremely grateful to have met some inspiring people on his post-rock journey and what started out as a humble University project has now led to two full-length albums, two EP's and numerous singles. Alongside this, Code I has also signed to Fluttery Records.

"Phosphenia" is his latest self released album.

Album: Willow - Willow

Band: Willow
Album: Willow
Label: Stickfigure Recordings
Year: 2007

Tracklist
01. And Finally, I Can Breathe
02. When The Sea Called Our Names
03. I Have Seen The Grave
04. 1172

"With a metamodern approach to post-rock, Georgia's Willow bombard crunching, hurtling, and oft subdued, instrumental-metal nuanced riffage to almost iconoclastic proportions; tempered perhaps by a lack of direction, or innate focus, since mastered by its peers, the band's debut EP is, indeed, encouraging. Alleviating sustained torrents of ringing guitars, the dynamics that permeate the record work well in creating a balance between the visceral and the serene. In seamlessly creating this aura, Willow are able to control the pace and sentiment that they wish to convey. Not only does this maxim allow the music to flow perhaps more superfluously than it has a right to - more importantly, it allows the band to create a simulacrum -- an arbitrary palate where the soul of the record can be laid bare, granting them an absolute creative discipline to sculpt and emote at will. And it is, surely, this facet that differentiates the epic and tragic from colloquial hearsay.

Typifying the genre's inclination for quiet/loud pieces that build and detonate, (and, naturally, vice versa) the EP opens with the blistering "And Finally I Can Breathe". Employing digitally altered speech snippets, the song progresses into a cacophonous deluge of violent, scattershot guitars that wouldn't sound out of place on an emo(tional) record. The result is such that the proceeding segue, into the Mono-lite "When The Sea Called Our Names", is almost too cautious; the resulting edifice is, ultimately, a disappointment, taking far too long to establish any type of presence or purpose. With "I Have Seen The Grave", however, Willow make amends with an auspicious statement. Coming on like "Mouths Trapped In Static" or "Have you Passed Through This Night?", the track oozes cinematic grandeur: conversations pan amongst static-noise and piano arrangements before breaking from the SFTF staple and igniting into EITS tradition. Although rarely straying from this principal, (one critique here would certainly be its longevity) the band's progressive tendencies unquestionably deserve praise." - The Silent Ballet

Their influences are Russian Circles, Red Sparowes, 65 Days Of Static, Cult of Luna, Maybeshewill, Mogwai...

Lost In Kiev writes and records their own texts as an alternative to sampling movie soundbites which are commonly used in post-rock tracks.

Artwork and live video clips are also created by the band which generate an emotional and graphic cohesive experience during live shows.

The band toured during 2013 and 2014 for the release of their first album before starting to write the next LP in 2015. Lost in Kiev is now comprised of 4 members which has allowed them to welcome a fresh and creative energy.

The new LP "Nuit Noire" released in September 2016 on dunk! records, it's an anthem of the night. Odes to nights of dreams and loneliness that also become mystical.

Deepbreathers are a Portuguese instrumental post-rock/alternative duo from Oporto, which consists of Francisco Oliveira and Bernardo Costa.

The band formed in early 2013, mostly influenced by Radiohead and their experimentalism. A first song was released, "Urbanizing Movement's Frantic Rhythm", which the band soon decided to be an extremely short and low-quality work. The song was removed and, apart from a few concerts playing covers, the band did not release anything until July 2013. That month, "Get Me Sparkling", a summerish song, was released. Very easy-listening, experimental and completely influenced by the early, innocent stage of the band, two kids in a nutshell at the very beginning of their musical experience.

Unfortunately, school left no space for Deepbreathers to get back to work at the end of the summer, so the band went idle for another year. "(For The Moon)" was another summerish, although a bit darker song, featuring artwork by Pedro Azevedo, released in August 2014. But once again, school made sure the band would not work on new things until the next year.

Deepbreathers won the Tradiio contest in January 2015, with "(For The Moon)". The band then finally worked enough to think about releasing an EP, after many ideas were put on the table. "Immerse", featuring Inês Saraiva Guimarães, was released in April 2015 as a single from "EP1", the then supposedly upcoming album. It happened that, at the time, upcoming had been a very strong word. A second single, "Perspective Will Kill You", a song depicting the lifetime of the common human and its inability to avoid mistakes, was not released until September. By Christmas, the band started working hard, fighting the trouble of having to study. The structure for most songs was already solid by February, and in the very few days before the album came out, recording and independent production were finished.

"EP1" was released on March 24th 2016, an album with a very simple mission: to define rhythm and melody as the best way to describe a physical, yet emotional landscape. It features an instrumental background work on the poem "Dinosauria, We" by Charles Bukowski. It obtained a very good reception among the target audience, and Deepbreathers are satisfied and working on new experiments.

News: 10 years of post-engineering

So a few days ago post-engineering turned 10 years old! When we first started this blog, we didn't expect to grow this big, interviewing bands and be friends with a lot of them, making compilations and keep going for 10 years!

I want to thank all of our readers and of course all the bands and labels that submitted their music, featured on the blog and making this great course possible!

Hopefully in 10 years we'll be here celebrating again!

With Oblite, his second EP for InFiné, Almeeva reconstructs his sonic aesthetic on new grounds, oscillating between cinematic indie and modern post-trance.

Astonished by Paris events in 2015, the artist’s voice become more elusive. His compositions make way for sharper beats and his synthesizers take up new challenges, to which words have proven powerless. The five tracks of this new EP make us rise up against the events which are beyond our control.
